  • The Eagles Feud - (The Onstage Fight That Broke Up The Eagles)
With some bands, the story of their infighting became as much, if not more so, a part of their history than the music. Such is the case with the Los Angeles-born rock band the Eagles. The Eagles formed in 1971 when Linda Ronstadt recruited drummer Don Henley and songwriter Glenn Frey as her backup players. It was on tour then that Henley and Frey decided to form their own group. Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner, who were also close to Ronstadt and played with her at the time, were included in the lineup. Then, in 1974, Don Felder joined the band.
From 1974 until 2001, the Florida-born Felder served as the lead guitar player for the group. But in 2001, he was fired. Felder had been called in for a recording session in 1974 to add guitar to a couple of Eagles songs. Not long after, though, as the band moved from its country twang, slide-guitar style to more rock, Felder was asked to join the group as a fully-fledged member. Not long after in 1975, Leadon, who introduced Felder to the group, left the band famously pouring beer over Frey’s head before doing so.
The first album the band released with its new lineup was 1976’s Hotel California. Hotel California is one of the best-selling albums of all time. It has sold over 32 million copies worldwide, making it the band's second best-selling album after Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975). It has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time.
And who wrote the title track? Well, Felder, Henley and Frey as a trio. Felder wrote the music and the other two wrote the lyrics. Felder also plays the iconic guitar solo. Today, the song is the band’s most famous, among many hits.
Soaring harmonies, intricate guitar riffs, and lyrics that speak to the soul - The Eagles etched their name in the pantheon of classic rock. Their music, a blend of California cool and heartfelt storytelling, transcended generations, leaving behind a treasure trove of timeless hits. From the laid-back groove of "Take It Easy" to the introspective ballad "Hotel California," Eagles songs became anthems for road trips, breakups, and everything in between. Their albums, like "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975," still hold the power to transport listeners back to a simpler time, filled with denim jackets and FM radio. Whether you've belted out "Desperado" at a karaoke bar or swayed to "Lyin' Eyes" under a starry sky, there's no denying the enduring magic of The Eagles. They were more than just a band; they were an experience, a soundtrack to countless memories, and a testament to the enduring power of rock and roll.

I was one of the lucky fans to see Linda Ronstadt's show at the Troubadour when Henley and Frey played with her for the first time. Love at the first sight and sound! "Silver Threads and Golden Needles" was epic! A few years later I worked for a year to produce an outdoor concert in Lake Elsinore CA with the Eagles, Linda, and Jackson Brown. I thought their music went together perfectly. A last minute permit issue caused the show to happen only in my mind. I attended most of their LA area shows in the 70's. There are too many Eagles songs and styles to pick their best but IMO "Seven Bridges Road" is their best harmonies...Love and peace to all.

I was at the concert in 1980 where Frye and Don argued on stage. Frye stopped playing the drums on about the third song and Don looked at him and they argued for like 15 minutes or more, people were leaving others shouted for them to play and one person threw a glow stick at the stage (in those days glow sticks weighed a few pounds) and knocked someone on the head leaving her unconscious and with a concussion. After that they sang like Sh-t. It with only one more argument. Most expensive concert ticket I ever spent at that time and it was the worst concert I have ever been to.

Really what did they have to be jealous of? They were already big, they wrote most of the songs. When Felder joined yeah he helped them to a more open range of rock music but so did Walsh, who made Felder an even better guitarist. But there isn't anything to be jealous of,for Glenn and Henley. They were the center stone of the band and the other guys know it and it didn't bother them. When the reunion tour and album hell froze over Glenn and Don asked to be paid more then the other guys because since the break up,they had huge successful solo careers. Only other one who had a successful solo career was Walsh and I'm sure he was paid a little extra also. Felder didn't like it because he felt he was just like them and no way was he close. He really had nothing huge or big going on those years but like the cry baby he always was,he got himself kicked out of the band and the band did just as good without him proven they were right.

For the record, it’s “Eagles”, as they saw eagles flying in the sky while they were tripping in the California desert. Peyote or mushrooms, I think. Also, Joe Walsh was with the band when “Hotel California” was made and was a second lead guitar along with Felder. I saw them in 2020 around March 6th in Houston, their last show before the scamdemic shut them and everything else down. Not a single person in the @20,000-30,000 person Toyota Center. They hired another guitarist to play so they had he and Joe Walsh, especially on Hotel California. It’s so hard to pick from so many great songs, but “Lyin Eyes”, “Best of My Love” and “Take it to the Limit” are among my favorites. Can you imagine the talent it takes to play the drums and sing the way he does at the same time? He and Glenn Frye wrote the majority if Eagles songs, btw, especially the lyrics.

With being caught lip syncing, Henley’s only move left to salvage the Final Farewell Tour is to bring Felder back. But hell would have to freeze over again and that’s not likely.
