    I busted the LCD on my beloved S95 a couple weeks ago whilst on a hike up in the Santa Monica mountains. Upset as I was, I wasn't willing to fork over the $150 to Canon so using the info found in Daniel's video (linked from Dpreview), I ordered the correct LCD from eBay and I took my time and followed the video (pausing/rewinding in spots) and the results produced a working LCD again. Having a set of micro-drivers handy (purchased at Fry's for < $10), made the repair so easy. Daniel is spot on in his instructions so if you have the time, gumption, and tools, you'll be in good shape. Thanks to the author of this video!

    Thanks very much. Your video saved me a bundle. I bought the screen from Canon - just as you said, about $52 with two-day shipping.

    Ok I have performed the repair, and everything went well. My only note to anyone doing this in the future is that the power cable (small one) slips right in very easily, but the larger data ribbon cable will go in but you actually have to work it back and forth to get it in there a little further. Use the hole in the ribbon to pull with your flat screw driver. I thought I had messed something up because the lcd lit up but nothing was on the screen. I re-seated the cables and it worked.

    Dear Daniel, Thanks a lot for the video. You motivated us to try to repair my wife's favorite camera. Initially when the LCD was broke I thought it will go to trash, but looking your video we decided to by a new LCD and replaced it. Now is working again, thank for share your experience.
    The back-video music is perfect.

    @FibonacciEngineering As a follow up to this, back 2 months ago, I had called Canon parts but since the S100 was so new, they didn't even have parts for it yet.
    Fast forward to today, and they still didn't have the parts in their system, but the person who I was talking to knew they had them. They asked some people and they found the part number and were able to order it. The LCD display for the S100 part number is CM1-7245-000.

    Thanks for the video! It was helpful for repairing an s100, even though there were some differences. If anyone else is still using this for repair for an s100, the cables on the s100 are different, as someone commented previously. This requires a little more disassembly. The first, smaller cable, is similar, and just pulls out gently at the same point as documented here. But the larger cable wraps around to the front. You must remove the top case piece (one more screw), and the front case (1 or 2 screws plus a tiny cable). Then you have to FIRST remove the ribbon cable for the buttons (same style connector as shown in the video. This also wraps around to the front and covers the large LCD cable. Both of these cables look like they are awkwardly slotted through a board on the top but they can actually slide out sideways (that is vague, but the point is that it is easier than it seems at first). So take the buttons cable off, then the large LCD cable. Then you are home free and just need to put it all together again. This ended up being a lot more disassembly than I was expecting, but it was, in the end, quite easy and it worked.

    @FibonacciEngineering Thanks for the reply -- I'll definitely give them a call tomorrow. Incidentally, when poking inside the camera as you have, are there any warranty seals, etc that have to be broken by this replacement? I'm not keen on voiding the warranty of a 2 week old camera, but I'm also not keen on the 150$ replacement fee for the LCD either. Guess I need to weigh my options, but if there aren't any warranty seals on it, it might make it an easier decision.

    can you tell me which screw driver size you used to release metal bracket (2:55) mark. I have a screw driver that can take off the other silver screw near hdmi side/diagonal from the screw holding bracket (if that makes sense)..but i cant seem to get screw to loosen.

  • @FibonacciEngineering
    @FibonacciEngineering  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @stilesja The same thing with the screen lighting up but no image happened to me the first time as well. I thought I was just being a goof, so I didn't include it in the video. I took the large (data) ribbon cable out a re-inserted it being sure that I really got it in there, then it worked. Sounds like a similar experience to you. I am glad it went well.

  • @garyfritzz
    @garyfritzz 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Aha!! Success!! As I expected, putting the cover on didn't help any. Out of desperation I took it apart and tried re-seating the data cable for about the 7th or 8th time... and this time it worked! The connection must be **really** fussy. I guess the lesson for the "no video" problem is "If at first you don't succeed, try try again!"

  • @ClemsonJeeper
    @ClemsonJeeper 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @FibonacciEngineering The installation instructions are slightly different. I didn't take video, but basically follow the steps for S95, but you will need to remove both the front AND the back of the camera. The ribbon cable from the LCD loops around and attaches to the front of the camera. There are only a few more screws that need to be removed, but be careful while in there. The ribbon cable that connects the four-way-selector/spinner on the back also loops around to the front.

  • @ClemsonJeeper
    @ClemsonJeeper 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @FibonacciEngineering You need to remove this ribbon cable first, then the LCD ribbon cable. Then you can install the new one and put it all back together again. I got it all up and running again in under 30 minutes for around 30 or 35 bucks for the part + shipping vs the 170$ they quoted me to replace the LCD themselves.

  • @FibonacciEngineering
    @FibonacciEngineering  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ClemsonJeeper I don't know if it is the same part. You can call Canon Parts and see if the PN is the same. I know that the S90 and S95 did not have the same part, but the procedure for replacing the LCD was essentially the same.

  • @garyfritzz
    @garyfritzz 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have to fully reassemble it to get it to work? I don't want to go through the full assemble/disassemble process for nothing, but I can't get the screen to work. The backlight lights up but no video. I've removed and re-inserted the data cable half a dozen times. Help!?

    So, I also got the glowing black screen my first attempt using an ebay replacement LCD on my S95. But then, while trying to use the screw driver to close the black bar clamp on the wide ribbon on my second attempt, the screw driver slipped off the bar and impaled the ribbon all the way through! It also broke the black plastic clamp into two pieces as it slipped, only one of which worked. Attempts 3-5 got the same black screen. I think that I'm done!

    They have this replacement part on eBay but they dont include the part number to verify it is the correct part. It is just described as a LCD screen for Canon S95 for about $35. Is this a good way to buy it or is it best to go direct to Canon?

    • @FibonacciEngineering

    S100 user here. So far the only differences seem to be the silver screw is on the upper right instead of lower left, and the ribbon system is different.

      @israrturo 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Tanner, I am needing to replace my screen and was wondering if you purchased yours with the backlight or without. My camera still shows the screen but of course it has a crack on it. The one with a backlight is about $40 bucks and without about $13 so it would help to know before ordering. Any insight you can give would be appreciated. Thanks

    • @tannerhoke
      @tannerhoke 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Israel, here's what I know. If the screen lights up, you have a working back light. In my situation the backlight was also crushed so I had to do a complete replacement.
      The way the screen connects to the backlight is very small, and when I removed my broken backlight, it actually popped off the connection. So when I got the replacement I couldn't plug it in.
      The solution to that is actually buying a new Dial which is $10-30 USD. I doubt you have to go that far, but I'm just sharing my experience with it.
      I plan on making a tutorial since I can't find anything for the s100 online, and I can share it to you when that's done.

    Daniel, thanks for the tutorial, I watched it 4-5 times before I attempt on the LCD replacement. I just finish replaced the new LCD on the S95, turned on the camera, there's picture, event took a short video. Then when I turn the camera off, the lens won't close all the way! I took apart the camera again, undo the new LCD screen, re-do everything step by step and now there's no picture!! and the lens still won't close all the way. Please, can anyone shed some light on this?

    • @FibonacciEngineering
      @FibonacciEngineering  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure sorry to hear about that, Sherri. First, I bet you not having video is simply due to the ribbon cables not being pushed deep enough into their connectors; remove them and then place them back in. As far as the lens "closing," do you mean it won't retract all the way, or the little "lens cap" that covers the front of the lens won't shut?

    • @sherrilofgren5165
      @sherrilofgren5165 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Wilson Wow! I'm so impressed that you reply so quickly. It's the lens won't retract all the way and the "lens cap" thingy stayed open. I took the LCD screen off and on 3 times to make sure the ribbon cable is in all the way, even put the old LCD screen back on to see if it make any difference but no luck. I was very careful not to touch anything else when working on the LCD screen. Any thought on what may be wrong? Before I replaced the screen, the camera still able to take pictures, I was able to look at the pictures on the computer.

    • @FibonacciEngineering
      @FibonacciEngineering  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sherri Lofgren : the most common reason for a lens not retracting is that some debris is lodged in the gears. My guess is that when you disassembled you camera you somehow got some junk lodged in the lens retraction mechanism. Regarding the LCD still not turning on, I am at a bit of a loss. Other than checking the ribbons for damage and triple checking that they are properly aligned/seated in their holders, I don't know what to tell you. Good luck!

    S120 owners: I fell on and broke my Canon PowerShot S120 screen last week. I got a replacement off of eBay for $ 56.99 from a company called Rongstar Digital. The S95 video helped a lot, but there are a few differences. Remove: two left screws, two right screws, the screw by the tripod mount closer to the back of the camera. Back comes off easily - same method as video. No fiddling with bracket needed - just remove the three screws on the shiny bracket (the screw by the wrist strap is the longer one). Lift shiny bracket up keeping its ribbon connected. Two ribbons get removed by flipping up the light brown hinge on the black connector. Third has a hole that you can slide with a pin. Original LCD has a lead shield stuck to it - I peeled it off and put it on the replacement as flat as possible. Then reversed the process with the new LCD in and it worked perfectly. Total 20 minutes. Thank you Daniel Wilson - Canon will no longer sell the S120 display - they say the S120 is now a replace-only product, and replacement is $314. Your video got me working for only $60 - thanks!

    Why you would make the video so hard to watch and hear with all that super-annoying music playing is beyond me. Ditch the music, or lower its volume, and you'll have a very nice video; otherwise its best viewed with the sound off.
