    Thank you so much for sharing this! My S95 somehow got a speck in the lens that shows up as a slight cloud in all my pictures. I replaced the lens according to your instructions and it's good as new now! In order to get the bottom camera screw hole to align correctly upon reassembly, I had to keep the battery compartment door open. Also, I used a dull safety pin to reattach the small cables and push them into their slots. Thanks again!

    Thank you for this video! Because of you, I was able to successfully replace the lens in my S95, without tearing any of the ribbon cables. Thanks so much!

    I really liked the editing and voice over for this video. It has that same feeling as the Secret Life of Machines shows.

    Hi Tim, thank you kind sir for sharing your experience with us. I actually have an s100 which had the dreaded lens error. I had purchased the camera via grey import from Hong Kong and so after inquiring about warranty had decided to purchase a new camera rather than pay for the camera to be sent internationally. It had sat on my shelf for a year when I decided to look for a way to fix it myself. Your video gave me the information that I could purchase a lens on ebay, and gave me the confidence to try replacing the lens even though I had no idea what I was doing! I learnt from your unfortunate mistake with the ribbon for the ring dial and easily detached the ribbon when dismantling the camera. I have just finished and my camera is working again! I am over the moon and I have you to thank for it. So thank you Tim!

    We've loved this camera for taking pictures of our daughter ever since she was born. She and the camera are 2 and a half years old now and I let her take pictures with the camera as she grew interested in it. Of course that was just asking for trouble. It was only a matter of time until she dropped it on the open lens and it got stuck.
    Your video saved our camera! With your help, I replaced the lens unit and we're back to taking pictures of our beautiful daughter. And I'm looking for an older used camera that I can let her take pictures with :).
    You were right about those final screws holding the lens unit being tough! I ended up stripping two of them and had to use a 1/16" bit to drill them out.

    Thanks for this great video. My lens unit was damaged when I accidentaly switched on the camera in my pocket. Repair by Canon would have been too expensive. From your video I got the idea to order a replacement lens unit at Alibaba for less than 20€. Thanks to your hints, I managed to repair the camera even without damaging the connection of the lens ring. After reassembling, I noticed, that I've also saved one of the screws ;-)

    Great job! Pretty nerve wracking to see the cables twisted, but all's well that ends well.

    Hello Tim, Thanks a million for daring to take your camera apart to change the lens and for also videoing the process for the rest of us! Thanks to your clear instructions and your unfortunate mishap, I was able to take mine apart and replace the lens with no problems at all ... although, like Sebastian Queißer, I have ended up with one spare screw!? But no matter, as my camera works beautifully again. I had got some glitter embedded in the lens somewhere and no amount of hovering over the lens could dislodge it. So I bought a replacement lens for £10 off Ebay. Without your video, I would have had to buy another camera, or spent a ton of money getting it repaired. Thanks very much, Tim - you're a star!

    Wow, Tim, I hadn't thought of replacing an entire lens assembly when my grandson "manually" closed the lens on my wife's Canon. I may have to see if it's still tucked in a drawer... Thanks!

    Sweet.
    I always approach these type jobs only by taking tear down photos and making sketches while laying out the parts in an order that is meaningful to me and I still do them with great trepidation.

    You just need a few small wires and a fine soldering tip and you can get that ring working. Great video, thanks

    Great video, but after watching I decided to take another approach. As it was broken anyway I figured I had nothing to loose so before I bought a new lens I would get physical with it first.
    I grabbed the outside of the lens with a pair of pipe grips (better than pliers as you can adjust the size) and pulled. A bit of a yank and pop, out it came. It left a few scratchs but fully functional and working as far as I can tell 100 percent. Not sure it would work on all dropped cameras, but worth a try as fast, easy and free.

    Well done! - How was the result? Each and every one of those image sensors (be it CCD or CMOS) has dull or more sensitive pixels, which needs to mapped out in the camera's firmware. This is done at a professional shop where they have test equipment and special programming cables to calibrate this in the camera. Replacing the sensor and not telling the camera will leave you with a camera that has some wonky parts in the picture.

    Tim you were killing me when I saw you leave that front panel pcb cable connected. I'm like - that's gotta tear. Why doesn't he just disconnect it. It disconnected itself :-) I don't own this camera i just enjoy watching you work on stuff.

    Have fixed 2 Sony APS-C bodies but nothing as complex and when did it are able to find the service manual as well as ifixit was great help. NEX-6 had a ripped wire ribbon and a6000 evf glass broken, both than ifixit offered no advice on how to repair.

    Excellent! There's nothing like repairing something built by robots - 'bots may be faster but only a human can want to fix something. And don't give up on the torn cable (been there mate) you could always MIG-weld back together.

    Awsome video, I too had dropped my s95 camera, lens first, and jammed the lens.
    This helped me removed the lens and gave me a heads up on what not to do (ring ribbon). But most of us prolly dont use the ring function too often anyways.
    My question is where did you buy the new lens? I found some on ebay new, but does not come with the center ribbon that goes over the rear opening of the lens.
    Thank you for being the "test" subject! Very helpful!

      Robbie Red - DONE! thanks very much for taking the time to upload your video. however now my flash module is a bit rough when retracting - i must have distorted it when undoing the very tight retaining screws. I dismantled the old lens module out of curiosity - wow that is some piece of engineering inside. miniscule little stepper motors for focus, & aperture. a tiny servo? motor with rotary encoder for the lens extend / retract ( ie that part that had failed ) & little shutter actuator. there is also a magical piece of work with small coils and magnets in X and Y relative to a lens floating on tiny ball bearings. i presume this is the basis of the image stabilisation system. there are some clever people out there!

      Pentax 35 mm was & is such a (juggling act) between lenses 🐠 eye 🔭 photo , etc. just like a circus.
      =====
      My film crank is broke but you can still turn it really slow. I took pictures at my niece's wedding and I didn't use the light meter because I didn't replace the batteries.
      ======
      I thought the photos came out better plus it's fun to buy film from Mexico sometimes they (throw in a few free ones) sometimes (they take a few free ones).
      =====
      Plus on a darker side I thought about using the light meter off that Pentax as a night scope firing mechanism.
      =======
      It sees through the eye of a green-eyed monster Russian sniper scope.
      =======
      The light meter identifies the thermal difference in the target since the current to a solenoid step up.
      ======
      Solenoid connected with twine (piano wire) whatever through bamboo on the trigger ; onto the other side .
      ======
      It works great as long as your worst enemy is using it.

    Funny that 10 years later, I am trying to make a rarely used S95 useable again by find a way to convert the zoom into a fixed focal length prime. I guess I just have to accidentally drop it 😂😂.
