    Toyota put 225/95/r16 on GX because they know they are good for rough terrains. The narrow tires probably contributed to your fuel economy.

      Good point and could be why I get better economy than the gxl owners 🤔

    I get it mate. I love my 2018 GXL 76 series on 33 inch tyres. I also have a very well set up twin locked Prado but always go back to the 76. Unbelievably reliable -super for remote touring. I did a huge 7,500 km remote trip two years ago and overall my fuel consumption was about the same as the 4 cylinder vehicles - heading up the Connie Sue and into the desert the 76’s V8 was just ticking over while the other cars were working hard. I think the rear track issue is highly exaggerated- I have done heaps of sand driving and while noticeable on occasions it is hardly a big deal.

    Its not that hard to get 10/100 onroad. People just tend to drive these cars like they're a HSV or something and are then shocked when the fuel economy sucks ass.

      I have learnt to not believe everything you read with cars and reviews. It definitely isn’t as bad on fuel as everyone says and it rides fine. Not sure why everyone hates on these so much. People must be flogging them to get poor fuel economy like you said 👍

    The suspension becomes an issue when you need more articulation. Its fine for driving around a farm, but really hard tracks you're going to be in 2wd mode when it lifts corners. Thats typically why people convert leaf spring patrol utes to be on wagon chassis', they're coil sprung.

    • @NorthOz
      @NorthOz  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wheel lifting is not great on these. They do it pretty easily but a coil conversion would make it waaay more capable than anything on the market and the reason for that is cost. The hiluxes have more articulation but not much as they can’t fit decent wheels

    • @sttill81

      They will just push more sand. Let down skinnier tyres have just as much traction just a longer pattern rather than rounder pattern. Also more weight, more fuel and so on. Im thinking 255/85/16 one day but I’m enjoying the standard tyres for now

    You win notice the rear track in sand and when towing.Your not the only one who has trouble shifting to low range as you have to lift as well as shift which was not the case in the old 75's.Just a new quirk in the new truck.........I will get used to it.

    • @NorthOz

    If you are going to load heavily, which from your imagery looks as if you will, you must look at a larger brake booster. Builds here suggest this should be the first thing you do.

    My main concerns are for the 4 cyl going forward.
    No Manual Transmission with 4 cyl initially, hopefully in the future
    and the tune on the 4 cyl, are they thrashing it?
    .
    On one USA site [that I do not remember] it was mentioned that the 4 cyl internals were freed up a bit to give it more revs and better fuel economy.
    I do not know the truth of it but it has been speculated that in the past Toyota reduced the friction of the piston rings and that has been a cause of fuel getting into the oil more and that made the more frequent oil changes necessary to avoid the oil getting coagulated and helping to bind up the rings causing bore wear and the piston problems Toyota have had.
    Never owned the V8 but it will be a shame if / when it goes.
    Personally I wish they would give us a petrol version like in the USA.

    • @NorthOz
      @NorthOz  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can’t speak for the 4 cylinder but after having 4 x 4 cylinder trucks, I’m happy to be in a v8. Completely different off-road and all for the better. They won’t be made for much longer so it will be interesting to see the replacement. Whether it’s hybrid or otherwise

  • @dcro536
    @dcro536 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey mate you should check out the reviews on the 2.8. It has different gearing, transfer case and tune to prado and Hilux. It outperforms the v8 on every measure except down hill first gear. Even fully loaded and towing. See Ronny Dahl and full boost drag race for referennce

      Definitely worth a look, I’m more saying this for your viewers who are considering a new one. They are really impressive. What got me was the 4cyl outperforming a tuned v8 in a towing test uphill.
