The Rangie certainly is luxury on wheels. Once you're out of the mud you can punt it around the black top like a race car. So much fun to drive on road and so comfortable. The big leather seats with fold down arm rests are like sitting back in a lounge chair. The Triton by comparison is like most work utes. You wouldn't choose one as an on-road only vehicle.
As per the earlier comments - offroad it all starts and ends with traction - and that comes down primarily to tyres. A mild A/T has less than a quarter of the traction of a mud tyre that is also designed to spit out the muck as it goes. In muddy conditions, A/T's just don't cut it no matter how good the traction gizmos. What is more interesting is that the Rangie was able to even get up there on that rubber.
you have to remember that the RRS is essentially a short wheel base D3 with stiffer suspension. It also has independent suspension all around and cars with that system combined with the shorter wheel base and harder suspension will get a lot of wheel lift. Having recently been out testing a new 200series Cruiser though we saw a lot of similar dynamics including the continual wheel lift.
Great video, rare to find informative vid`s like this, its given me a bit more direction on tires for my pb challenger. dose the triton have rear diff lock and are the mud tires standard size. As it is hard to find suitable off road for the challenger
Another great example of how capable land rovers are off road straight out the showroom! Imagine if the RR had decent rubber on it! Cant be sure for certain but was there a locker on the back of the triton? Great vid, thanks for sharing.
Probably need to look at the tyres again for clues as to why you would need two different driving techniques. In really muddy conditions like this you have to do a lot of compensating if you are running A/T's (as compared to the mud terrains on the Triton) In the RRS, the traction control also helps but only to a limited degree. Most cars on A/T's wouldn't make it through some of those sections. The main compensation is that you need more momentum to get through each section.
Surprisingly, the Triton, in spite of having a longer wheelbase, overhangs and prolly more weight, performed as good as the RRS. Also, the Triton driver seemed to know his vehicle better. Tires definitely made a significant difference.
The section about the tyres pointing in the wrong direction was a test we ran to see if the A/T's combined with the traction control would have enough grip to climb out of the deep ruts. Close but no cigar. I think it would do it with the muddies on. You can see how easily it handles the same section on the return run through a few moments later. Have to say that the Cooper LTZ all terrains are by far one of the best A/T's on the market.
In some sections I'd have to agree varun but in others, with the light tread of the tyres completely clogged with mud and clay, it was the only way to try and find some traction. Bloody great fun though ;-)
Great video guys. One things that’s always puzzled me is why oh why do people cut trees just enough to barely squeeze a car through!? One or two cuts further up the trunk - same amount of cutting but wider space (yes, I always cut more than just enough if possible).
Good question mate. Sometimes it accessibility but usually additional time to remove larger sections depending on where you are on the track and how you have to get back to wherever you're going.
This is not a full RR but a Range Rover Sport with a 2.7ltr turbo deisel putting out around 440nm of torque. It does weigh in at 2.5 tonnes though. DOn't forget that in this video, the Triton (L200) is running BFG mud tyres and the RRS only has Cooper All Terrains on it.
We have a lot of different vehicles in our club and there are pros and cons to all of them. Sometimes it's the diff wheelbase that helps/hinders them in certain sections, sometimes it is the clearance etc. In the end it's just personal preference and just because one person likes one brand/model doesn't mean they are right or wrong about anything.
triton made it look easier than range. better tyres, driver or or a well worthy off road beater ? my kuddos for making a pleasurable viewing. well done
@landrovertractorboat Thx mate - we are really enjoying documenting some of our adventures. They are a great learning tool and a good reminder about what not to do in some situations. Still looking for a set of muddies - having probs finding something less than 32" diameter to fit an 18" rim.
This just goes to show how good the Range is! Think about it, the RRS did just about everything, all while having shit tires! Imagine if it had some beefy tread it probably would have crawled over the tree they had to chainsaw! LoL! I like RRS not a huge fan but still like them. I own 2008 Lexus GX470. Just FYI. And I'm looking to do some off roading. The closest place to me is Rausch Creek in PA, since I'm in Philly, hopefully I can go but if you look it up its pretty crazy there! Almost need mods for everything!
Nice vids, just curious, is the RR and the other red Disco on other of your videos have front lockers? Thks. As a member from Caribbean Rovers Puerto Rico.
so off road triton is superior to the rangies? (pls answer) despite the technologies the rangies have?. the only thing i hate about double cabin is the back seat just to straight up, that must be unconfortable on a long journey at the back...anyway its a good mild track right there...
this just goes to show what a land rover is all about. If you notice the range rover has no problem with the course and with only street tires, and the other vehicle is modified
I realize this is an old post but I was wondering where in the watagans ie which trails you were on? Some of those trails look familiar, I think I've taken my Q5 on some of those (In dry weather) trails. I've done some of Whitemans lane, Watagan forest road through to Wollembi, New mill road, The Null, Lemon Tree & Yambo Forest Road. Am I in the same area?
@bcatz454 I was joking with my mate in the Triton about how good the Cooper A/T's were and was bragging that they could even pull me out of the deep ruts on this well known puddle. It was close but no cigar this time. We've done this section more than a few times for fun and it was just a bit of experimenting to see how far I could push it. Must remember to go back and try out the new STT Muddies on that section.
@d3syd the vids were shot on a variety of tracks in the Watagans. the midder roads included Wave Rock and the Road around Mt Warrawolong coming in from Koala Rd end.
Was looking at getting a 2004 Vogue. Are all the horror stories true I read online about the transmission failures and that they have a service life of 130,000klms only? Also lots of other transmission issues and electrical faults. I like the 2004 model the most but are there other models better?
I'm guessing the Mitsubishi weighs a thousand pounds less than the Range Rover and has better tires. Not surprisingly, it looked like it was in a different league out there. However, the interior falls far short of the Rover for sure. :)
Interesting. The RRS always has one wheel lifted off the ground while negotiating challenging parts, while the Triton seems like it has all 4 wheels planted 90% of the time.
Correct: Better tires on the L200, the RR tires in the mud were just coated and couldnt shed the mud in order to get good grip. Plus a better driver in the L200 compared to the RR, he seemed to not know where his front wheels were pointing and was pretty heavy on the gas by the sounds of things. As for diffs, the RR has centre locking diff (if turned on) and I dont know about the L200. :)
Out of interest, I notice you have NSW plates :) whereabouts is this, and where do you recommend going (Newcastle, Hunter Region)? I just bought a 2005 L322 Vogue, and looking for somewhere to go camping etc
It's actually a very steep section. The video doesn't do it justice. The ruts are also deep enough to have you dragging your belly through lots of sections so you need 4WD to keep any kind of traction.
No probs with the clearance, but the weight of that rig on the steep slope on what is a permanently wet section of clay track would probably pull it up in 2WD. Would love to see you have a go though ;-)
@william49suzuki The Sport has an intercooler and one of the big jobs is keeping the mud out of it. The intercooler is set very low at the front of the engine and there is actually now a kit available for a high mount intercooler with wider fins specifically designed for offroad. At $1400 its still a ways down the list of options I need to bolt on. Rock sliders are next ;-)
the RR is luxurious and very comfortable on road compared to the triton. While the triton in the other hand is cheaper and with the money you get RR, you could build a very offroad capable triton with lockers, tires and other extras. It's really about what kind of vehicle you are after. Both great vehicles for their purpose. :)
Depends where you are located mate. There are lots of tracks in and around the Watagans near Newcastle that includes a few nice camping grounds. YOu can also head a little further north to the Barrington Tops. There's a video on here somewhere with footage of our xmas trundle there. Send me a PM with your email and I'll shoot you through some info and gps coords.
With the tires and torque diesel Triton, you can not compete. And yet, the Range does the same, the same sistios passes smoothly. And if we compare the interior of the vehicle, there is no color.
The RR driver needs to know which way his front tyres are pointing... interesting to hear how much harder the RR is working, presumably compensating for the traction control applying the brakes all the time. It also seems very short on articulation. The Triton looks more at home.
G'day to everyone at Carribean Rovers Puerto Rico! Glad you were able to drop in for a look at our vids. In answer to your question.... No. Neither vehicle has lockers. The RRS has the standard centre lock differential and traction control. The D2 has a manually locked centre differential and tractions control (circa 2000 version). Glad you like the vids. More coming your way soon including offroad tests of our new toy, a fully kitted out SVX Defender! Cheers

The RR would have done better on the trails if the driver knew how to navigate the terrain as well as the MT driver. His front tires were always crossing the drive line of the trail making it more difficult than it had to be.
I agree - it could be down to better driver skills but the Mitsi looked casual in the way it dominated. The landy was having to build up speed to charge through a lot of stuff because you and I know it wasnt going to get there. Having to nag it about to get through looked like a repair bill waiting to happen.
Would you like some Apples to compare with those Oranges you have? :-D If by easy you mean added several thousand dollars worth of modifications then you are correct. A fair assessment is - With the right gear traversing this type of terrain is Easy.
@MegaJosh747 No air lockers on the triton will check on his tyres and get back to you. They are definitely not standard size and are on custom steel rims

Shame the RR Sport didn't have mud-terrains on but it did well with the A/Ts. I know which of the two I would prefer for every day use. I have Cooper LTZ's fitted to a 'grown up' Range Rover and I think these are better than the A/Ts. The Nitto Terra Grapplere are better than both but noisier on the road. For every day and off road use the LTZs Rule...
The triton has aftermarket tires, and difflock which give it some advantage on here. But in the other hand, the triton also is clearly lighter and has more flexible suspension because of live rear axle. Overall can't say which is superior or actually better, does it even matter? They are quite different type of vehicles anyway,
Not sure what you are comparing! If the cars, ok you have 2 different ones but if the tyres, sorry but this is wrong as you should have 2 exact cars make and model! Good video by the way but no point in comparing tyres with 2 complete different cars!
SOOOOOOOOOOO SEXY!!!!!!!! I LOVE RANGE ROVERS AND CANNOT WAIT TO GET MY NEW ONE (in 3 days she’ll be delivered!!!!) I just sold my 2008 to my cousin, should’ve went off roading in it! But this Sport one is sexy too! The other truck is keeping up!
@landrovertractorboat New muddies just fitted and will be giving them hell next week to try them out. The Triton will be coming along as well so we'll see if we can find some tough terrain to pit them head to head again. Stay tuned for new video highlights in the coming weeks.
Land Rover could have made a better 4x4 if they had further installed traction controllers of the discovery in the old defender ! They could've come up with something like g class !
MOTOR HAWK car n truck enthusiast Hi, in the UK the traction control was an option on Defender. I have a year 2000 110, with abs and traction. Haven’t got it stuck yet, though I have tried
Dave Harris and I have 2008 90 and has got only traction controllers in it and is not as responsive as any Subaru or 2010s Range Rover , yet is even more capable ! Last year when I was driving my Rig on the Swedish countryside along with some people using g wagens ,I was still pulling better than anyone can ! And mine has also covered 300000 miles ! In Darjeeling,India ,my uncle drives series 3 ,and can keep going without any modification,as it is completely stock ! And has covered 400k miles ,after he drove it at an expedition from Darjeeling to Ladakh via Nepal and Tibet ! This rig is common in Darjeeling for tea plantation owners for carrying supplies ! And are also used as taxis through mountain trails ! Great British workhorses !🇬🇧
@TheMr3742 Since that trip it has a new winch on the front and bash plate along with some big spotties on the roof plus bigger muddies. Positively beastie now ;-)
Great show of how important the right tire is!
Really enjoyable.. that confirms the tyres for me!
Thank you
The Mitsu back seats actually have a angle on them, they are very comfy for a large adult on long hauls.
Man that dude in the RR can absolutely not drive and with those tires.... it shows how good the RR actually is!
The Rangie certainly is luxury on wheels.

Thank you for not ruining your vids with shitty country music or cock rock music in the background. Nice work. 'Subscribed'
This video has been really useful for helping me pick my tyres, I am going with the Cooper ST MAXX.
As per the earlier comments - offroad it all starts and ends with traction - and that comes down primarily to tyres. In muddy conditions, A/T's just don't cut it no matter how good the traction gizmos. What is more interesting is that the Rangie was able to even get up there on that rubber.
They are showing the significance of each tire, not the trucks quality. It's impressive the rr made it through with the tires it had
The Range Rover has diff locks as well as ride height adjustment, dont talk shit mate
Great video, rare to find informative vid`s like this, its given me a bit more direction on tires for my pb challenger
I would love to see what the RRS would handle like if it was fitted with BFG Muddies too.

Im just glad to see your using the rangie for off road use =)
Great video thumbs up to the person filming 👍
That would generally be the the wife
Nice to see it's about the performance of the tyres and not who's 4wd is better.
Just a thought, but wouldn't it be easier to just pull that tree trunk out to the edge?
'twas a mighty oak my friend and was lodged in thick undergrowth. Was no way we were moving it anywhere ;-)
Triton is running 33inch BFG muddies. The diff locks are aftermarket ARB lockers front and rear.
Genuinely impressed with the Rangie!
Surprisingly, the Triton, in spite of having a longer wheelbase, overhangs and prolly more weight, performed as good as the RRS. Also, the Triton driver seemed to know his vehicle better. Tires definitely made a significant difference.
It is clear than the wheels makes the differences, becuase the LR is better but with mud wheels are key.

Thats the reason range rover over working the ass off !

You can option the Triton from the factory with a rear locker. The Triton didn't have them for this vid but does now have front and rear lockers.
In the mudpit at around 1:15 or so, why did the rr sport have the wheels turned to the right instead of going right through?
Why didn't they just use the winch on the Triton to move that tree out off the trail? Is that not allowed in Australia?
It was too large my friend and ran right down the bank.
@blibbax it dose allow you to put bigger tyres on and therefore give u more ground clearance
@bcatz454 I was joking with my mate in the Triton about how good the Cooper A/T's were and was bragging that they could even pull me out of the deep ruts on this well known puddle. correct me if Im wrong, the L200 is doing better than the RR. Does it have diff Locks?

Mine is the 2.7 turbo diesel. Amazing fuel economy. I get about 10L/100kms on the blacktop.
@landrovertractorboat
New muddies just fitted and will be giving them hell next week to try them out.
@2.53 cartoon network ?
@TheMr3742 Since that trip it has a new winch on the front and bash plate along with some big spotties on the roof plus bigger muddies. Positively beastie now ;-)
At 1.15, why the hell is the Rangey driver turning left? 😂 Dude needs to leave that thing on the road where it belongs!
