I'm 20 years old, in college pursuing a bachelor's in fashion design and have been living and breathing classic menswear and sartorial elegance since i was 16. Which might seem ironic considering i don't have a lot of pieces in my wardrobe that represent my true style. But i do love that channels, people, and communities like these still exist. It keeps the hope alive that classic menswear is still alive and there are still so many passionate and loving people in this community. I thank you for your service Hugo. One of my goals is to start my brand and represent it at Pitti Uomo one day. :)

    First of all,
Thank you Hugo and Sonya for having us on your show. It was a joy to visit and hang out with you both for a few days. Hugo I am in awe at your gift of the conversational dance you have mastered. Thank you for making me feel at ease during this chat together. 😘
On another note, I find it interesting that a few people have to put their two cents in and try to chime in about HAT ETIQUETTE that they think they know something about. I find it quite interesting to see how individuals feel the need to tell my husband what they think they know with such surety. It’s on the level of a person reading a book about how to play basketball thinking that they can tell Michael Jordan how to move on the court. It’s quite interesting to witness such behavior of those condemning others when they more than likely don’t adhere to dressing in classic style on a regular basis. I have seen Americans online criticize Italians for not wearing socks with their suits in summer, when these Italians have more style in their pinky finger than them.
My husband obviously has his style together, and knows the codes about style etiquette being that he not only is well read on the subject but also lives it DAILY FOR DECADES, and revered for it internationally. He is VERY AWARE of how to conduct himself in the circumstances he navigates. Hat etiquette is more complex than a novice could believe. After all, people rarely wear hats now-a-days and rules change over time. My husband looks great at the end of the day 😁 Geez…I wasn’t expecting to write a novel 😜

I grew up watching old Hollywood movies and subconsciously clung to classic, feminine styles. Watching Angelique's interview was a particular treat for me because I hardly see women of colour dressed in classic style in the media. Like Angelique, I feel most comfortable in A-line dresses, and I find that skirts are actually perfect for winter.

What a fantastic episode. Just splendid. The concept of comfort in juxtaposition to style is false. Well cut clothes are comfortable. Fit is the foundation of comfort. Baggy stretchy clothes try to make a shortcut to fit. Find your size, buy your size and it’ll be unbelievably comfortable. Once the fit is right, the style is actually not too hard to sort out. Bruce Boyer, Alan Flusser, learn a few rules and bingo! You’re looking so smart with no effort

I`m a 28 year-old Brazilian. I have been make an effort to dress elegantly for the past years and I truly appreciate the opportunity of watching this conversation, since in Brazil it is pretty hard to find good inspiration and even good pieces of clothing. It is a challenge for me, because buying from Europe and US is very expensive (even considering the cheaper brands), but learning concepts helps a lot in using my very limited budget the best way possible. By the way, I already knew Gui Bo, even being from Brazil. I`ve been following him over a year.

    • @pukovnikklefeld

I feel you. I'm in Europe, Croatia to be exact, so it's a bit more lax with shipping costs (though shipping to Croatia is still probably the most expensive in Europe). But finding good classic pieces locally is nearly impossible. People are terribly uncultured here. Second hand shops like Goodwill would die the same month because people would rather throw old stuff in the bin than donate or give it to someone for free. So vintage is absolutely not an option, leaving terrible fashion brands as my only option. The good old tailors all closed their shops decades ago because of my country's aggressive policy towards small businesses and the bigger local companies all make trash, even at 1000€ for a made to measure (but bad pattern and cheap material) suit.
For example, I'm attempting to find a wearable double breasted linen jacket at the moment. There's exactly one semi-decent option in the country, and it's lined with polyester and the fit is off even on the model. Ugh.

    Thank you, Hugo!
Gui and his lovely wife are such an inspiration. Their Instagram is a treasure trove of class and style. For me, they are easily one of the best-dressed couples on earth. I've realized it's all about a cultivated eye that gives one taste, and they have it in spades. Their classic Hollywood aesthetic is something that works for them so well. It makes them appear larger than life and I'm certain they always turn heads.
Together Gui and Angelique additionally exude something so rare: Gui unapologetically embraces his masculinity and she her femininity, and this primal formula is as glorious and needed as ever. Everywhere today we see men and women dress the same: jeans and t-shirts, sneakers, backpacks, etc. The modern world didn't just bring equality, it sadly brought sameness, and men and women are obviously not the same - one of the cruel lies of our modern culture. This beautiful difference is not something to be ashamed of in relationships but fearlessly celebrated. Gui and Angelique embody this celebration at the highest aesthetic levels and the results produce palpable sparks.
Hugo here is as gracious and warm-spirited as always. He has such a golden touch to his words and it comes from such an earnest place. I've learned from Hugo that a beautiful spirit on the inside always shows up as part of the outfit on the outside. Its power is real and cannot be bought in any boutique. My love and gratitude to you all (and to Sonia too ! even though she was not here).

Thank you for this, Hugo and Sonya! I haven't yet made it to Pitti, and have wondered if it would really be a place for me, as I'm not a peacock, and tend to be shy in large groups. But this interview says that even someone relatively new to style, and wearing MTM rather than bespoke (in other words, someone like me) could well find a place there. Perhaps some year the winter Pitti will line up with travel to Europe for me and I'll be able to get there and meet some of these great people from the men's style world that I've been following online.
This was my second time hearing Gui and Angelique, and both times I've enjoyed very much hearing about their experiences (the other was on the MensWear by a Woman podcast). Thank you for bringing them to the show this week!

We have a "boutique" room in our condo building where people leave items and there, just waiting for me, was a book mentioned previously by Hugo called Bespoke The Men's Style Of Saville Row. 11:08 that's exactly what's currently holding me back from getting down the rabbit hole. If I'm getting into something I have to do it right and belong to the "best". It seems like it takes decades to achieve that.

It's very interesting (somewhat surprising) to hear Gui talk about (NYC) LO-LIFE. I grew up in the Bronx. That whole LO movement was mostly a Brooklyn thing. In the old days I worked at Bloomingdale's (Manhattan) & Yes, those kids would boost Polo all day 😂. Security had to beef up.

During the mid-nineties, the idea in corporate was to allow for more casual wear, the initial idea being that this would stimulate employees to work more and to be more productive in the work place. Now, most companies in the US have realized that this has had the opposite effect to the one desired: the more workers dress casually, the less productive and enthusiastic they become! Hence a movement back to more formal wear. This is not at all surprising. We must remember clothing is a tool which influences our state of mind. The medium is the message. You dress like you want to act and like the person you want to be.

A place where men come to “peacock “. I would say “Style and Profile” . I 💯 respect and agree with the notion. Personally, I believe that the best time for fashion, either for men and women, is Fall/Winter. Thanks for sharing.

I have a jacket that is very similar to Guilliame's, I would love to have a matching waist coat. Absolutely rocking the Fedora my man. Here's an idea Hugo, a segment with Sonya and Angelique together. I would enjoy seeing those beautiful women discussing style and fashion.

Great content & awesome couple. It's so refreshing to see an elegant & very beautiful Sister doing the damn thing, yet not half naked nor ratchet!! This is so interesting Hugo, bacause I've been following Gui on social media for some time. Now I'll follow Angelique ❤

As a Brother, respectfully, I honestly wish you would have left the “half naked nor ratchet” part out as all could have used their imagination in that regard. I only say this because I agree with the remainder of your comment.

@@YacDiesel Respectfully, we gotta keep it real brother. Accountability starts at home. Funny thing is this Sister looks so much like Janelle Monáe. Even her style is remenicscent of early Janell, stylishly sofisticated. But have you seen Janelle's new image 🤦🏾‍♂️? Hey to each their own I guess 🤷🏾‍♂️. Thanks for the compliment still 👍🏾

@@chrisv.s.3403 I understand. The point I’m trying to instill is that there is always a time and, more importantly, a “place” to state these things. If you catch my drift.

@@YacDiesel I agree with you, that kind of language that was used can actually serve to promote or reinforce negative stereotypes.
Better to celebrate someone’s elegance and good taste without making degrading comparisons, in my humble opinion. 🙏

and of course once in Firenze you have to visit the Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella which has been there since 1221 I think. Tabacco Toscana is my favourite scent of theirs.

I see Angelique’s comments about hats. Men’s hats are in my view the hardest classic wardrobe piece to pull off well. But when you do - like Gui - WOW!! Like he says, it just takes trial
and error. But the first step is ALWAYS to ensure that the hat properly fits your head!

I would love to go to Pitti, so I assume from what you're saying I could go as a non-exhibitor or buyer, just a working tailor and have a good look around while experiencing the style.
