    Top notch, as usual. Practical, no fluff, real tips.
    Could you please expand in one of your future videos on the last point - controlling serve placement and consistency with spin and other a bit more advanced approaches.

    This wasn't a serve video: This was a serve CLINIC!!!!! One of the best I have ever seen!!! I coach high school tennis in Salt Lake City. Rock solid advice, and I am sure to use it; not just for my players, but for me😏 Thank you!!

    Your videos are always top notch. Follow your videos and your stations etc. and there is no where else to go. I am a 4.5-5 player and you are helping me fine tune stuff I never knew. I am 65 and you make it so easy to understand and then implement. And zi have looked at hundreds of videos in the last 2 years. I never had a lesson before I started using TH-cam, so I can't say that anymore. Thanks so much.

    Something I struggled with that everyone should be aware of: it's easy to think that since we want to hit the serve forward, we should also attempt to make the racquet travel forward at great speeds. This isn't wrong, but I ended up exaggerating the forward component of the racquet speed and forgetting about the very important upward component. If you are struggling to clear the net, maybe your racket is not traveling upwards enough to meet the ball. Something that helped me to fix this is to look at the ball in the air and keep the tossing arm pointed towards the ball until the split second before contact.

    Thank you Coach Ryan,
    64 y/o 4.5 player and have struggled with toss consistency. Your idea to turn palm sideways absolutely has helped with consistent placement of my toss on first and second serves, flat, kick, and slice so I am more balanced after hitting the serve, too.

  • @txyakfishing
    @txyakfishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Something my coach had me do way back in high school was get down on one knee and then throw millions of balls over the net. He insisted that to be a good server, you needed to understand that you are hitting up on the ball and that the spin is what brings it back down. What's interesting though is that he never taught the coiling motion. I did down together, up together motion for a good while, but over time it naturally evolved into the coiling motion you demonstrate in this video as a result of the throwing motion drill. By the time I graduated high school, I was serving 120 to 125 without much effort and could put the ball pretty much anywhere I wanted to put it. I'm just getting back into tennis after a 10 year hiatus, so thanks for putting this video together. Was a nice refresher for me!

    It feels like all the tennis topics have been covered to death in the tennis instructional youtube world but havent heard anyone tackle this one. Could you do a video on how to identify your opponents grip (continental, eastern, semiwestern and western) from across the court. I cant seem to figure out what my opponents grip is from so far away - so maybe some tips or tricks to quickly identify the grips they are using on say on groundstrokes, volleys, overheads and serve.
    Then relate it to what the inherent advantages/disadvantages of that grip is so you can come up with a gameplan as to how to better attack them based on that information.
    Love the channel. Thanks!

    Very useful tips as usual. I´ve been practicing your checkpoints and my serve got better in two weeks. Serving became more easy and relaxed. But I need to confess that I´m making too many doble fault and I think is because, after 30 years serving the wrong way, I have to adjust my timing. I have another question and I didn't find the answer in your lessons. I´ve noticed that pro level players extend their tossing arm for a long period. Should I try to copy this kind of movement? Thank you very much!

    For the toss I adopted the Feel Tennis toss and slightly improved on it. I had very little success with the full water glass method just feels tremendously awkward. So what I do is cup the ball on the base of the fingers (squeezed together) while gently squeezing with my thumb and pinky finger for added control of the spin. I can loft the ball motionless but resist the tendency to roll the ball off the fingers when placing your toss deeper into the court. I had a huge argument with a hitting partner about tossing the ball high ala DelPotro fashion. Years later to this day we still disagree. Point being whatever works best for you. Man can I ever increase pace on my serve when I toss into the court. Takes plenty of practice but worth it.

    good video, my biggest problem is racket drop does not happen naturally, I have to do it, and my arm drops the racket often independently before I can get shoulder to turn, I hit my back often in my drop, try to keep grip lose and arm, sometimes not so bad, but lack any consistency. And I try to do your swing path, hitting shoulder and elbow does not lead, can you do a video for this issue? I just start my serve from trophy position and palm stays down

    about the toss, i usually toss alot higher than you do, is there a right or wrong in this? I noticed that your contact point is at the apex of your toss, and when I serve, because I toss the ball so high, the contact point is when the ball is alreay falling.

  • @brakerbraker829
    @brakerbraker829 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes and No - the "coil" action should not be overstated. The majority of power and torque come from the lower body drive. You mention pitching: please watch a Tom Seaver or Nolan Ryan for examples of large leg muscles generating power.

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for the messages. Unfortunately the legs supply a small percentage of serve power. If you’ve ever tried serving on your knees you’ll see how faster you can serve without legs. I’ve served 97mph on my knees. I’m not saying leg drive isn’t important. But to say the “majority of power and torque come from the lower body drive” is simply not true. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to serve 97mph on my knees.

    • @brakerbraker829
      @brakerbraker829 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And I can can hit a golf ball 250 yards from my knees with fancy modern equipment...that doesn't mean the lower body isn't still the most effective and efficient generator of repetitive kinetic power. Physiologists and exercise therapists all understand that the leg muscles are FAR more reliable as levers. Watch the classic service power of a Stan Smith or an Edberg. The only time the legs "supply a small percentage of serve power" is when the service action itself is under-optimized and "muscled" at the expense of a total body motion.

    • @2MinuteTennis
      @2MinuteTennis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A deep drop isn’t the most important thing of the serve. Is long as you’ve got the grip, bday hat knock off, and on edge going up to the ball you should be good. 👍
