Resin Druzy moulds and back filling them - what works best?

    Hi I'm Wendy a resin artist and crafter.
    In this video I am trying out three different ways to back coat pieces that have had a druzy mould in them using vista cascade resin.
    I wanted to have a solid back colour on these placemats and still use druzy moulds. So to accomplish this I needed to either fill or cover the crystal areas before coating the back completely.
    I try three different methods. Out of those three, there is only one which I wouldn't use again, but I am still happy with the results.
    Which way would you choose or do you have another idea??
    I hope this video inspires you and helps you create beautiful pieces as well.
    Come over to Instagram and say hi, I love to see what other crafters have
    made.
    Thanks for watching

    Love how experimental you are. Have you tried gold leaf, or flakes? I made a little 1:12 scale picture frame, using a silicon mould and UV resin. I dusted the mould with mica powder and I mixed a little in too (not too much, the light has to get in lol). When I took it out it was pretty transparent still (held up to the light) and a bit sticky - so I dusted some more mica on the front and UV lit it from the back. After all that I still didn't think it looked solid enough, so I glued flakes of gold leaf all over the back. Whew! Mental but at least it was only tiny. xx

      I have put flakes in things, but haven't used them much Tbh. I haven't had the pull to them yet 😂. They haven't grabbed me and said use me in every 🤣🤣 you know what I mean 🤣. That must have been fun to do though. Thanks Val 😀👍

    My favorite was the second and third one that you did I really think the color came through a lot better and accented the druzes better whereas the holographic paper you put down I mean you can see the holographic but it doesn't really accent all the edges and bumps of the druzy part but that's just my opinion you know I have real crystal Drew's he's here at home and when the light hits them it's like a dance of rainbows you know and if you want to do that in resin then you want that same effect you want that Shimmer shine glistening glittery iridescent glitter might have made it a little bit harder for you to see it but but I think the second two were very wonderful if you would have pushed that paper down in or maybe even used more of a holographic foil instead of the paper or card stock, but they all were amazing but my 2 fav were the 2nd and 3rd one!

    • @Toonpish
      @Toonpish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much Bobbie. I totally get what you mean about the light dancing 🕺, I think the third one wins in the opinion section 😂. I'm not keen on the second one myself, but I do like the third one too. 👍😃

    You could try sealing the mica powder druzy areas with clear uv resin then put your background colour on.

    • @Toonpish
      @Toonpish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you put clear resin of any type on to clear resin the pattern or effect is lost completely 😳

    They all look good. Thank you for sharing your experience with this.
    Have you thought of either using a foil in the durzi (not sure on correct spelling area.. or try use that area as a shaker.. granted if you do try the shaker idea, might be better on something much smaller.
    6:58 You would be wanting to use the clear flim and uv resin together, just a tip for it, want the uv not to come to the edge of the piece, just used a a seal like in durzi, then dome. Other wise if dropped it will pop off.
    liquid to use for a shaker is baby oil, or distilled water, you can either color the liquids with food coloring, or ink that is friendly to the liquids, or glitter or powder, even small charms. I have found adding the sparkly bits or charms and mix them together before pouring into hollow space keeps them from forming into permanent clump.
    hope my explanation is not to confusing, want to keep you from frustrations.
    Saying with much love, Don't forget gloves. I really do not want you getting ill. You are a very vibrant person. And with all powders are you wearing a mask?
    Think you would have fun with this experiment.

    Love this idea. Instead of putting mica on druzy you could brush the resin druzy then pour topcoat. Keep mica from being on druzy silicone. Way to go I just ordered large druzy inserts to cut up like that. I also filled silicone into a resin piece let it set up and made Extra inserts. It worked. Thanks Wendy for such informative and inspirational videos. Hugs Sheryl 💙🎨💙

    Thank you so much for sharing this! I have always wondered if there was a way to backfill the druzy as I was worried it would lose all it's definition. I made some coasters with a round druzy piece in the centre and over the space of 6 months where the centre is so much thinner it has started to sort of bow so there is a bit of a dip which can cause the coaster to sucker on to the bottom of the cup. Bit of a disaster, but now I might just remake them using one of your techniques. Thanks again 😊

      It's been such a long time since I have used them .... I will find them and get back to you but If you want to find out how much you need to make for a mould then you can fill it with rice and measure the volume of rice. I hope that helps 👍
