    Pro tip *maybe*. I was just out in my garage drilling holes in plastic lids, having a terrible time with burrs. So I tried drilling a small pilot hole and then drilled with the 1/4" bit. It worked beautifully to create a clean hole. I'm not sure if it will work for everyone, and it is an extra step, but it's how I'm going to do it from now on. Thanks for the video.

    I would have serious doubts about the adhesive holding those two discs to the top of the jar. how often do you have them come loose or leak?

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The adhesive on them is the real deal. As long as you attach them the way I show in the video they are good for 12 - 15 runs in the PC, then you simply replace them. I was skeptical at first too when I saw them on WillyMycos channel, but they work great.

    Are the plastic lids able to go into the PC? The lids I’ve seen say dishwasher safe but not to be used for canning. Basically a lid for storage. Great video as always!!

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You just have to make sure they are PP5 plastic, which a lot of food storage plastic is. PP5 is fine in the PC. You'll see that "no canning" clause even on PP5 though. Kind of a CYA thing for the manufacturer.

    An added benefit of a quick hit with the flame changes the surface of the PP and will improve the adhesion of the adhesive.

    Great video as usual! I have actually used the plastic lids from Amazon for grain jars and they worked well. I inoculated in open air and just kept wiping down the syringe with an alcohol swab. No contamination! (so far..)

    You mentioned in one of your vids that some people use a stainless steel ball in jars to mix up their LC. Have you tried this?
    Worried about the ball breaking jars, but dont want to use teflon magnetic stir bars because teflon sketches me out.

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I have tried it and it worked fine. The bearings I bought aren't huge though. They are a little smaller than a pea.

    I mistakenly inoculated one of the spawn jars you showed me how to make with two different strains, Morel and Oyster. Should I assume the Oyster will dominate, or should I toss it?

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Morels are pretty aggressive too, so I'm not sure the oyster will dominate. It might be interesting to watch the war play out, but I'm not sure you'll be able to use it for anything.

    Hello. please I have a question
    I am a mushroom grower.
    I interested to grow pleurotus nebrodensis mushroom
    I succeeded to grow mycelium on first phase . I know to grow spawn but on third phase , I couldnt find an Appropriate substrate for this mushroom
    I usually use dustwood and bran , or wheat straw , but my spawn didnt grow
    Please can you tell me what substrate formula should I use ?

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've actually never grown nebrodensis, but I would think supplemented sawdust wood work. Question though, why not just grow P. eryngii instead???

    I am really partial to Ball PP5 Reusable Lids !!
    they come with a built in PP5 seal that does not disform.
    sticking them sticky filter patches & injection ports has to do with how things stick to plastic too!
    plastic naturally has a static electric charge so if the lids are on the cooler side & the air is dry they will have a stronger static electric charge (look MOM, I'm doing science)

      One possibility for the disclaimer is that the lids are made for food storage and not food preservation as in hot waterbath or pressure canning.
      That I am a serious canner for food preservation... that is my thinking.

    Are jars better than bags? I've heard conflicting opinions.

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's personal preference, but also depends on your equipment. Bags are prone to melting and blowouts in small pressure cookers like many new cultivators start out with. So the little extra volume you get isn't worth it imo. If you buy larger atmospheric sterilization equipment or an autoclave, bags are great. I wouldn't mess with bags no matter what though until you have a flowhood.

    Hey man, i am curious, is it ok to use wide mouth jars instead. I only ask because i have a brand new 12 pack of pint size mason jars that are wide mouth. My train of thought it would be easier to get the grain spawn out. Please tell me if i should get the others

    Do you ever use plastic bottles that are constructed with filters, specifically for mushroom growing? Smh I cannot find them. I'm growing enoki and I had to loosen the jars bc there's not enough air.

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen those plastic bottles online, but have never bought them. Found them on Etsy, but sold out. Maybe they can help you find some:

    another great video :)
    those injection ports.........
    how many times can you poke through them before they start letting air in on their own?
    the ones I use I can use 8 or 10 times only, looking for replacements.
    Thanks

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've started replacing them after about a dozen runs. I like them better than the rubber insert type, but they're still not as durable as a glob of RTV, just way more convenient.

    • @themyceliumnetwork
      @themyceliumnetwork ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RenegadeMushrooms I'm using the rubber insert type on my LC jars & I can never get to the bottom of a 500ml jar before they need to be replaced, maybe I'll start making up a bunch of syringes but making up 300 syringes at a time takes up a lot of storage space!

    Use some high temp silicone on the underside of the plastic lids. The same stuff you use for the injection ports on the master jars.

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it's a good tip. I don't have an issue with them as is, but every once in awhile a grain kernel will get stuck to the bottom of the injection port.

      I used RTV years, it works good. I'm at the point in my life where I'm willing to pay a little more for easy. That being said, this is not the most expensive way of doing this. These are less expensive and more effective than some other pre-fabbed filters and ports out there.
