It’s funny because the exact éléments that makes the books difficult for people are the the same that makes it easier for me. Maybe I’m going slower because you sometimes have to reread a sentence or pause a second to think about what you just read but I find this style more engaging, real and overall it goes smoother for my brain
I agree. I read it in about a week. It was a new record for me as I'm usually considered a slow reader. I read messiah in about 3 days (and about I cried at the end). Children of dune another week. I'm currently on god emperor, and had to take a break due to getting the flu. But I'm loving this writing style and wish I had gotten into these books way earlier in life (I'm 42).
2:24 they are using a lot of words but nothing is actually happening. Book about nothing, save the son, marry the princess, defeat the bad guy ..same ol story with a lot of words. I guess I had seen the lynch dune before reading so it’s pretty easy to figure out what those things are
Thanks for this. I usually stick to graphic novel/comic/manga since it's easier to visualize and understand what's happening, and everything you're covering is on spot as to why it's so hard for me to read normal books. Rereading, looking up words, terms that will he explained (hopefully) later down the story. I myself hope to be a fiction writer in some capacity one day, and it fills me with an odd satisfaction that many famous authors also had trouble putting their words into more digestible fragments for the reader to piece together. Even despite how hard Dune is to read it still has such an impact on fiction that it's worth it. Making things easier for the reader helps but translating the thoughts of writer to reader can sometimes feel like decoding a secret long dead language... and sometimes that's OK. Clarity is mayweather when it comes to complex ideas. Thank you.
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you found this video useful. Regarding what you said about this video also being applicable to your experience reading other books: You're right. Some of the points that I make in here could be critiquing countless other authors--even some of the classics like Charles Dickens, Henry James, and George Eliot. I have a bunch more videos that I'm scripting (book reviews/analyses, including on graphic and experimental novels), so stay tuned!
My least favorite thing is the use of many stretches of dialog, where you can only tell who's speaking if you keep in mind the first and only mention of who started the dialog. Example: Joe looked suddenly at John, "John, why did you do that?" "You know why" "If I did, I would not ask" "You're disingenuous" "I grow weary of this quibbling" "You are resentful from yesterday" "Yes I am" "I knew it" "You are intelligent enough I suppose" Now, who spoke the last sentence, Joe or John? I would have to read each of these kinds of passages several times. It is fucking awful.
Yeah i have trouble with this too in books. sometimes they’re a back and forth between characters and then sometimes a character speaks multiple times, but there’s no indication on which. I try to figure it out using context but sometimes it’s still hard especially if the dialogue suddenly stops, to describe a scene and they don’t tell you who has spoken.
I wouldn’t just mind that .. but it’s also that they have these long dialogues that don’t accomplish anything it takes 3 pages to say something that is a paragraph
Yeah, I think I’m thrown off by the context. Is the “gestaltan flicker” the Reverend Mother studying the whole of Paul in a moment by perceiving his many parts? Or, in a single “gestalten flicker”, does Paul reveal himself to the Reverent Mother’? Or, maybe I’m just being obtuse. Idk.
I dont thing it is hard to read per say …it is hard to read only becouse i have seen the films ..i wish i didnt .it makes it kinda boring cause i kniw whatsgonna happen and film is pretty accurate and faithfull to the book mostly

This exactly! I find Dune an easy read in comparison to many other works in the genre.

Strunk and White approve this message. (Stephen King really likes The Elements of Style)
The dune saga is my fav book series of all time and this kind of helped me to see why all lot of people find it so hard and boring, thx
Cool, I was curious to see how Dune fans would react to this video. Really glad you found it useful :)

Try stella maris then xD

I finished the thick boy dune mass market paper back in one week after watching dune 2, I guess I just enjoyed it lol
this video is so helpful
I’m glad I listened to this book before reading it.
Gestalten - to "see"(attend to) the whole; that is greater than the sum of the parts.
