I somewhat knew of all these. The only one I didn’t know anything about was the Korean circle in Japan. I mean I knew the Japanese and Koreans somewhat disliked each other but I had no idea that they were like segregated in Japan. I love these box videos. Gives a much bigger insight :))

It is great because in contrary to the guy that said they were biased it becomes less biased when they barely touch the subject. That being said what books are always better of course, but they too are influenced by the writers impression of the topic at hand. If you are not strictly talking about scientific papers and studies done by large groups that is.
This documentary is so good that I feel like we don’t deserve to watch for free. These types of documentaries should be shows in schools around the world.

Manuel Bonet Thank you for your question. I do not live there, I live in a city called Kathmandu. It's capital city of our country. I cannot tell you much about Mustang. But i can say that living there is hard. Like you can see in the video, it has few or almost no basic infrastructures like roads, School, hospitals. But people are friendly and help each other. Life is hard but equally beautiful. :)

Manuel Bonet Kathmandu, like every other capital cities in Asia is crowded. It has all the infrastructures but city is going under major construction. At the moment Kathmandu is dusty. It has perfect weather. I am not good at writing but you can Google informations about Nepal and Kathmandu.

Absolutely stunning video, I love how it encaptures the different perspectives of the different stakeholders in these Himalayan regions and also the tension between economic growth and preserving one’s tradition, culture and most of all identity. At the end of they day, we have to come to a consensus, whether borders are bring about greater good or not.
I did the Annapurna Circuit a few weeks ago. It was so sad to see the abandoned villages. We asked a local what happened. He said, "This community was established 700 years ago. In the 1980s everyone just left."
I am also a Himalayan and many Tibetians refugees live in our town .I tell them without violence or force you won't achieve freedom in this century.....but they don't want to fight😂😂
They just want sympathies while other Tibetan are living well in their own country. Please do nit invade other states in india. Love your own country no matter what

If you try nothing is actually impossible I live in india brithish ruled us for 200 years They tried to convert many of us indians to Christianity ,some did,some came from outside,I don't hate them (it may sound like I hate them) but I don't,they (Britishers beat us and oppressed us) offered us land if we leav our current practices but we didn't.......I hope you all grow your culture back up..

I am ethnically Nepali-Tibetian from my mum side. My great grandad has a house up in the Himalayas where my great uncle and some of my other family members currently still live! Living there is extremely difficult and the weather isn't the best however the culture of Nepal is mesmerising.

Hahahaha. I've been there 3 times. A couple of hundred film crews go up there every year to get shots from "the last untouched communities". Look up the brand ATOMOS that was on the Big guys black shirt. It's camera gear that some film crew would of gave him. He probably makes a good living helping film crews get their gear around. I would bet him and at least 1 other person he interviewed were people hired by production and they would of set it up by email/ph in the States.
Lot of Tibetans in India,even in South Indian Cities like Chennai. Nice People, generally keep to themselves, and interact with a lot of North-Eastern Indians . They love football. And i learned "Teshi Delek" which roughly translates to Hello in Tibetan i Think.

fun fact.. the term zomia was derived from the term mizo-zomi. An indegenous group of people who resides in the state of mizoram in northeastern india and chin state myanmar. Zo literally means Highland ..
I feel like there's some similarities between us( Kuki-chin-mizo-zomi) and these people. For us Zo means highland too. And our language is classed under Kuki Chin Linguistic groups (Tibeto Burman)

I am from Nepal and I completely agree with you! There is border encroachment in Nepal. China and India are desperately trying to control Nepal's economy and that's why thaye have built this road. Nepal should try to utilize this opportunity by making it a major trade center so that Nepal can have the maximum profit. They should also try to negotiate with China to keep the border stateless while also making it a major trade center.
Very well made documentary. I was born and raised in Nepal but I never knew this amazing region called Upper Mustang/ Lo Manthang existed until recently and that it was a part our beautiful country. The road accessibility has really put this place on the map. It has promoted domestic tourism, and improved the livelihood of those that live there. It has also allowed people to appreciate how beautiful our country really is. This place no doubt is on the top of my list of places to visit, the next time I make a trip to Nepal.
It's because there's no option beside India. The Geography of Nepal is really harsh. Only 1/3 part of Nepal is plain, remaining are extremely high hills and mountains. India is attached to the southern plains of Nepal, hence there exists a convenient transportation. Recently works are going on to enhance trade with China which will act a great boost to the Nepalese development and economy. The Nepalese government is trying to maintain a trade balance between the two giant nations. Some railways projects has been initiated by the Chinese government but Indian government doesn't want this to happen as they don't have good relationship with China. Also India wants to dominate the Nepalese trade because the fear of Chinese infrastructural investments. It's because of the conflict between these 2 countries, Nepal despite of being resourceful is heading towards development in a very steady way. Let's hope there will a harmonious relationships not only among these 3 countries but among all the South Asian nations especially India though because it has issues with almost all South Asian nations. South Asia has a tremendous potential to become International Superpowers, it's just that the really core of the system hasn't realized it. The government must work unanimously for a better change and citizens like us must be awared of everything going on cuz we are the ones who are responsible for choosing the right government.
Yeah, it's cliche but you never heard an American or Europeans when they arrive at our airports saying something like“ Do you notice all commercial planes are shown from Boeing or Airbus, even Starbuck's here too? “ Well you won't expect any tesla cyber truck or lambo Urus offroading by in mustang, unless there is a huge deposit of black gold underneath there. Yep, you cannot apply these "Western concepts " of tradition and culture. I grew up as a pastoralist, life gets tough, its not all grazing livestock and churning butter. This is a narrow view of things, but still it is well explained.

No matter how much any community and religion tries , it will come and go. Traditions will live some for few hundred years and some for a millenia and then with the changing world either they will change or die. This is how the world has worked and this is how it will work always. Communities will either adapt to the change or keep getting pissed on things which are beyond their control and these people seem to be adapting to the change very well.

Tibet was a strong exporter of gold, Nepal and China both had frequent trade with Tibet, I believe that it was after Nepal began its expansion campaign Tibet was conquered by China, I guess the borders were made to call it truce between two expansionist country ideals. The people were probably caught in the cross fire. The borders are only visible because China's military strength has grown over the past few years, I personally feel that it shouldn't be exercised at this area as these people do have strong cultural ties with tibet, perhaps someday they'll be able to cross borders without the government stopping them.

I'm stunned you were able to drive a car thru Mustang. I lived there for a while in '96 and the nearest road was a six day hike away! Oh, and Mustang was off limits to tourists in those days. Sad what changes are happening there. Thanks for the report!
making roads in himalayas is almost impossible lol. the mountain soil is so thin that it cant handle a lot of weight. there was recently a collapse over a tunnel on the indian side the name escapes me rn but that is a stark reminder that the mountains are literally not made for that. and thats also why the number of landslides is insanely high on the range

I am from Nepal and I completely agree with you! There is border encroachment in Nepal. China and India are desperately trying to control Nepal's economy and that's why thaye have built this road. Nepal should try to utilize this opportunity by making it a major trade center so that Nepal can have the maximum profit. They should also try to negotiate with China to keep the border stateless while also making it a major trade center.

Very well made documentary. I was born and raised in Nepal but I never knew this amazing region called Upper Mustang/ Lo Manthang existed until recently and that it was a part our beautiful country. The road accessibility has really put this place on the map. It has promoted domestic tourism, and improved the livelihood of those that live there. It has also allowed people to appreciate how beautiful our country really is. This place no doubt is on the top of my list of places to visit, the next time I make a trip to Nepal.

India has a huge influence on Nepal
It's because there's no option beside India. The Geography of Nepal is really harsh. Only 1/3 part of Nepal is plain, remaining are extremely high hills and mountains. India is attached to the southern plains of Nepal, hence there exists a convenient transportation. Recently works are going on to enhance trade with China which will act a great boost to the Nepalese development and economy. The Nepalese government is trying to maintain a trade balance between the two giant nations. Some railways projects has been initiated by the Chinese government but Indian government doesn't want this to happen as they don't have good relationship with China. Also India wants to dominate the Nepalese trade because the fear of Chinese infrastructural investments. It's because of the conflict between these 2 countries, Nepal despite of being resourceful is heading towards development in a very steady way. Let's hope there will a harmonious relationships not only among these 3 countries but among all the South Asian nations especially India though because it has issues with almost all South Asian nations. South Asia has a tremendous potential to become International Superpowers, it's just that the really core of the system hasn't realized it. The government must work unanimously for a better change and citizens like us must be awared of everything going on cuz we are the ones who are responsible for choosing the right government.

Yep, you cannot apply these "Western concepts " of tradition and culture. I grew up as a pastoralist, life gets tough, its not all grazing livestock and churning butter. This is a narrow view of things, but still it is well explained.

No matter how much any community and religion tries , it will come and go. Traditions will live some for few hundred years and some for a millenia and then with the changing world either they will change or die.
This is how the world has worked and this is how it will work always. Communities will either adapt to the change or keep getting pissed on things which are beyond their control and these people seem to be adapting to the change very well.
Sad but true, in the end things change. Not everything will (or can) be preserved

As an ethnic Chinese, I couldn't imagine the mindset of whom made the decision to enforce that border.
You can now, after they even claim Ladakh, people have have been living there peacefully with India. I don’t understand this expansionist mindset
Tibet was a strong exporter of gold, Nepal and China both had frequent trade with Tibet, I believe that it was after Nepal began its expansion campaign Tibet was conquered by China, I guess the borders were made to call it truce between two expansionist country ideals. The people were probably caught in the cross fire. The borders are only visible because China's military strength has grown over the past few years, I personally feel that it shouldn't be exercised at this area as these people do have strong cultural ties with tibet, perhaps someday they'll be able to cross borders without the government stopping them.

I'm stunned you were able to drive a car thru Mustang. I lived there for a while in '96 and the nearest road was a six day hike away! Oh, and Mustang was off limits to tourists in those days. Sad what changes are happening there. Thanks for the report!

making roads in himalayas is almost impossible lol. the mountain soil is so thin that it cant handle a lot of weight. there was recently a collapse over a tunnel on the indian side the name escapes me rn but that is a stark reminder that the mountains are literally not made for that. and thats also why the number of landslides is insanely high on the range
