For anyone interested, there's a movie called "Newton" which based on the hardships faced by an election official during voting day in a remote, millitant infested region in India
That movie is inspired by the book *Broken Republic* by Arundhati Roy. In that film, in an earlier scene, the army officer, played by Pankaj Tripathi, gives his gun to the polling officer, played by Rajkumar Rao, and says, "भारी है? ये देश का भार है, और हमारे कंधे पे है।" ("Heavy right? it's the country's weight, and it's on our shoulders") Classic example of the ultra nationalist narrative which preaches that army is some sort of deity and it's incorruptible, so it's unquestionable. But in the climax, Raj Kumar Rao snatches the "country's weight" from Pankaj Tripathi's shoulders, just to register few couple of aadivasis' votes!

As someone from a very small country (The Netherlands), I took a lot of processes like this for granted. In a small country with great infrastructure, it's much easier to set up poling stations. Huge respect for their voting system. As a person who has many Indian friends, i think they are one of the nicest people in the world. This show even more how much they care about the voters.
I came to comment section to post this precise comment. There's also a dude who has voted in every general election ever happened from 1950 till 2019. I just can't remember his name though
Actually, fun story: I was in India during the 2019 elections (my family and I had to go for a family emergency). I had never seen an Indian election in India before, I had always watched it on the news. But it was super cool to see and watch everything going on outside our home! It was insanely organized, right down to the last voter. If only bigger countries could adopt this model. Edit: Also, I recommend the movie _Newton_ to anybody interested in this subject. It's about officials trying to get tribal people in India to vote, even though there's only 76 of them and they live in the depths of a jungle.
It's still less. The main problem is people in big cities vote less. And also there is no postal voting for people(it's their only for military personnel and those on election duty) so when people leave their cities for work they can't vote.
@@poojan423 you are absolutely right. There is a definite room for improvement. As a matter of fact, even I didn't vote. Because I am studying in a city more than 800kms away from my hometown. My hubby was on election duty he never used to vote through post but this year he sent the postal vote As he was on duty. He never voted before because he would be on duty.

@@JM-mr6lv you're right, you must have a voter ID to vote in India (so only citizens can vote), no exceptions. Not just that, you can only vote in the constituency where you are registered to vote, for example, I'm a working professional in Delhi but my voter id is registered in another city (hometown) which is pretty far away. So if I want to vote I'd have to take time off work when it's election time in my state and fly back and forth on my dime, which is why a lot of working professionals don't/can't vote and hence why many rural places/towns have higher turnouts than big cities. It's not like you can just waltz your way into a booth and vote like it's nothing. Also, even with all this voter fraud is not complete uncommon. The ruling regional political party of Indian state of Bengal has given voter ids to hundreds of thousands (if not a couple million) of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh (think India's Mexico/Central America) to increase their voteshare. The ruling conservative party at the federal level has promised to deport every illegal immigrant from the country, but as you would guess the issue is as complicated as in the US. Firstly, Bangladesh has already said they won't accept any deported people without any thorough proof of them being Bangladeshi. And Secondly, India & Bangladesh enjoy very friendly relationship, so India for the larger good wouldn't want to upset Bangladesh especially with China already having an eye on all other neighbours of ours. So yeah, illegal immigration is also a hot button issue in India. American conservatives are worried about future demographic changes due to unchecked immigration, a couple of states in India have already undergone a significant demographic change due to years of unchecked Bangladeshi infiltration and one of those states is already pretty close to being a Muslim majority. I'm an out and out social liberal, but I'm against illegal immigration as well.
@@JM-mr6lv theyre seen as illegal and unfair because for the very poor, the IDs are not as easy as its made out to be to get. For example, there may not be a DMV in rural counties where many poor people live (and in the south a lot of black people). Also a lot of states that put these laws in place couldnt provide evidence of impersonation or illegal voting either, so there was no point

One of the reason... i m sitting here in US, so couldnot vote. Love my india.... जल्द मिलेंगे

USA: Tries to make voting as complicated and inaccessible as possible
This process costs $10billion . (38billion considering purchasing power parity to US) To get that much money , Senate approval is needed...Which will never happen 🤕
Yet somehow all of these people are required to have voter ID, but Democrats think that’s too much of a chore in the US.
These people may not have reliable transportation, putting an unneeded hurdle in their ability to vote. Also a lot of states that put these laws in place couldnt provide evidence of impersonation or illegal voting either, so there was no point

And of course, there is automatic voter registration! With no way to effectively double-vote, any Indian citizen over 18 can cast a vote with virtually no hassle!
Jacob Moss Media nah you gotta register. But it's very easy, so
That's not true, actually. I couldn't vote this time because I turned 18 a month before the elections and the Election Commission was unable to register me fast enough. I know a good few people lost their votes due to this reason but obviously the Election Commission did a spectacular job to carry the 2019 elections through.

It's extremely bad in the matter of Rapes and Overpopulation and Corruption.
Us Indians have come a very long way since 1947 in terms of Economy, Infrastructure, Poverty, Literacy etc. It's not perfect. It never is and there's plenty of bad news always in the air like the threat of Wars, Caste discrimination, rape (even though per Capita we're actually lower than so many 1st world countries but still it's nothing to take comfort in, we can do better) and so much more yet Elections are something that restore faith in this nation. In China there are more than 1 million ethnic minorities in detention camps so democracy still seems like a better option...

You cannot win the resounding majority Modi has in the Indian Parliament twice in a row without the support of minorities, especially Muslims. The minority electorate has clearly spoken about how safe they feel in India through the way they have voted.
Judging by the facts that they founded the country around the same time as India in terrible conditions and is now decades ahead of India in development and quality of life, I'd say it was a pretty good choice.
