  • Hey everyone! Welcome to my 2023 Techo Kaigi video! This is a long one. Also, I’ve moved my desk next to a window for some more natural light, so let me know what you think of that.
In this video I’ll go over all the things I’ve tried this year and look at some of the planners and notebooks I bought thinking I’d use next year. (Spoiler, it won’t be all these.)
In the end, I talk a lot about this problem of changing systems and over-buying with one of my big goals for next year being simplicity and working with what I have. I hope this part didn’t get too boring, but I had a lot of thoughts I felt like sharing.
I’m not going to put links for all the stuff I mention but if there’s something specific you want to know just ask in the comments!
Let me know what you’re planning to use next year!

I know my comment comes 4 months late, but I agree with your views on Sterling Ink. It's refreshing to hear anything other than absolutely loving Sterling Ink and how incredible she is. I fell for the trap and pre-ordered. I was even one of those who tried to sell theirs off (with no success LOL). Now, I am using it just fine, but Sterling Ink won't get my business next year and I even have an idea in mind for what I'd like. Thanks for sharing, take care!

Tbh, I was thinking that a lot of the issue with the planning community is there are fewer creators that pick a system and stick to it. Then someone (ie. Sterling ink, Aura Estelle, etc.) comes out with new planners that are suppose to solve the “planning issues” (ie. Too many/little note/daily pages, too much color, too nuetral and so on) and now everyone is like 🤷🏽‍♀️
I watch these videos every year in hopes that I’ll find a creator that manages to stick it out a full year in the same planners they started out with and maybe the would influence more people to choose consistency and discipline for reward rather than instant gratification.
Woo if you made it through this long message, it was not meant to be so long lol 😂 it’s just my opinion and please don’t take any of it to heard as I agreed with alot of what was said in the video. Happy Holidays 🎄

Thanks so much for sharing! - I feel like there are two sides: On the one hand, it’s amazing to have a large selection of TRP notebooks and planners to choose from; on the other hand … “choose from” is what you need to do 😅 And I’m not just talking about decision fatigue, also about people who are like “well, I’m just gonna (pre)order everything and decide later what I won’t use“. I think that happened a lot with Sterling Ink because the preorder was so early. Later, I watched quite a few videos reminding people that they need to make a list of things they actually need/want to use planners and journals for, but my impression is that quite some people didn’t do that before placing their Sterling Ink preorders. And I’m aware it is hard! I had/have a B6 Common Planner for 2023 and I know how beautiful these planners are, but I realized I couldn’t make a decision on 2024 planners before I knew what the Hobonichi lineup looked like. So I set myself the rule “no dated planners except Hobonichi” … and here I am with my Tomitaro Makino Weeks (main planner), One Piece A6 HON (dailies for work) and Tomitaro Makino A5 HON (journal) 😅 I’m a bit surprised I actually managed to stick to my own rule, but I’m glad I didn’t overbuy dated planners for 2024 I’d now have to sell.

Yes definitely agreed but it's also very hard. Sterling Ink was particularly bad because there was a "you can't possibly get this planner every unless you preorder now" sentiment behind it.

@@the_stationery_writer Very true - because that’s exactly how it was last year! I’m glad I did get on the preorder last year, but I’m actually equally glad I made a different decision this year. 😅

@@the_stationery_writerSmall companies like Sterling Ink have to do pre-orders because they need to know approximately how many products to order from their manufacturer. They have to pay for them up front and if they order too many then they lose money. Also with any company she tried to listen to what the customers wanted which is why she made so many different sizes. It’s the same with any other small company no run by a corporation. She can’t just order a bunch of product and have it sit around hoping someone will buy it like the big companies do.

hi ! thanks for sharing all your experiments with different notebooks and planners 💜i feel the same way about commonplacing lol I've been doing it since about 2014 so its funny to see how everyone has started doing it lately and how its evolved within the community. i used to keep one notebook where I had my planner and collected info and did journaling and it was just one "commonplace" book. the way I commonplace has also evolved as the years have gone by but I totally get where you're coming from with saying that you'd rather just have it one book.

I guess the good thing about not having lots of extra cash (like in my case), is no impulse buy happening.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts ;") Honestly, seeing people planner/journal hop (especially from my favourite accounts) disappoints me ;( & saddens me. It's like the creator of the bujo method/system (that many people have used & has worked wonders to their planning & creativity) saying the method isn't effective anymore. I do understand the need to hop or test other planners/journals coz I've been wanting that change too. To feed my curiosity and the aim to find the best (planner/journal) system for me. It's just seeing your "heroes" (for lack of a better word, although most did save me from planner chaos) choose another planner or system other than the ones they claimed gave them (some sort of) planner peace, kind of broke my peace too?
I'm afraid some people will attack me for saying these but I mean no hate. This is just my thoughts on...things.
On a lighter note, I have FINALLY found "planner brand peace" LOL Nolty & Take-A-Note are just *chef's kiss*. Buuuuut I'll be using a Laconic planner for next year as work planner, because the layout is just PERFECT for me (& it's cheaper). But testing it the month I got it...I'll probably go back to the Nolty 2281 because the Laconic paper is too thick & the grid size too big (5mm or 6mm).....
    Good luck to me.

oh, & my only complaint w/ the TAN is their tiny monthly
but the weekly layout, wonderful 68gsm TRP & zen-like aesthetics

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I didn’t see that the bujo creator had said that! How odd. That’s why I used a lot of asterisks when saying I do “bullet journal daily logs”. I think the whole point of the system is it’s unique and adaptive but strict adherence is probably what’s making it “not work anymore” for him. It’s OK to not be 100% concise all the time in your daily log haha the productivity police will not come for you.

    • @the_stationery_writer
      @the_stationery_writer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes I agree the monthly is a little small but zen like aesthetics is totally good 😊

@@the_stationery_writer oh no! He didn't say that, what I meant was, watching my "planner/journal heroes" jumping to another planner or system from the one where I got inspiration from is like someone (in my example the bujo creator) saying that "this tried and tested effective system works great, but it's not anymore" 😅
I'm so sorry for the misunderstanding. My grammar isn't always perfect even though English has been on of the consistent subjects in school from Elementary thru College 😅 I'm not a native English, too. Forgive me!

Thanks for your video! I really appreciated your coverage of so many books, how you used them, and what worked or didn't work. I especially valued your insights about "commonplacing" and how difficult it is to keep up with too many notebooks. I sometimes tend to think that I have to give each little thing its own notebook - overcoming that more lately. It's helpful to hear from others who struggle with this, and how they are dealing with it.
I think the Hobonichi Planner is called that simply because "planner" is the English word for "techo," as you point out. That book was explicitly designed (by Arts & Science in collaboration with Hobonichi) to make the Hobonichi more accessible outside of Japan - because more people around the world understand English than Japanese. Its full name is "Hobonichi Techo Planner (English)." The Original is "Hobonichi Techo Original" because it's the first planner book that Hobonichi made. In other words, all of the books are Techos, with some modifier to distinguish them from each other. (ADHD fellow traveler here. Among my favorite rabbit holes is researching etymologies. I'm not sure Hobonichi notebook naming conventions counts as "etymology," but maybe it's adjacent? LOL.)

This was such a good video!! I feel like I keep watching the same video over and over by different creators, and it was so nice to hear and see what at least felt like a really authetintic planning/ journaling look back (&forward) in your video. It becomes daunting to see so many identical opinions and spreads and filters on ig; it's been feeling like places where I used to feel a lot of comraderie and unique inspiration, is starting to morph into something of a weird stationery themed echo chamber (😂) and like more exclusive somehow by how defined its all become as a hobby... Anyways, that was the most dramatic way to say: I loved this video & love your stationery!!!

Thank you so much 🥹 your comment means a lot. I love what you said about it becoming a planner echo chamber haha I totally agree. I guess the weird part for me is I know how capable social media is of creating this, I just thought the wholesome little journaling community was safe. I recently realized that unfollowing accounts is an okay thing to do haha which sounds silly but there’s a weird pressure to follow the “big” accounts.
Creating notebooks is such a beautiful thing no matter who does it and how they do it. And if lindseyscribbles wants to do that in 50 different notebooks and systems that’s totally fine. I just don’t think that I want to use that as a source of inspiration anymore.
