      Similarly, the endangered Florida Crocodile has made a comeback in areas surrounding the Turkey Point nuclear power plant. It might not be a military threat but contamination, or even just the possibility of contamination, from natural sources or alien-made fallout keeping E.T.s away. All of these possibilities are reminders that humans' continued existence might be very precarious indeed.

    I've had the idea of a "creative drought" where if alien civilization is so intertwined that novel ideas begin to fade away and once exotic information becomes mundane. Leading to an informational echo chamber that after millions of years could be incapable of creating new solutions to existing problems. Hence fostering developing civilizations so they may add their cultural and technological distinctiveness to the thought Borg.

      Our cultural exports might be the most valuable thing our species could offer the galaxy. To a space faring species which has developed technologies to terraform multiple worlds and cross the vast distances between stars, we could never muster any technology or material they couldn't readily find. Our music, films, books, and creative endeavors might be truly one of a kind. It wouldn't really be difficult to quietly observe and they'd be wise to do so. Our species is a college Freshmen, who's been phoning it in and partying all semester, and now finals are looming around the corner. Maybe when we graduate and earn a little respect they'll start openly sharing.

    If the zoo hypothesis is true to any extent, I don’t think it’s a literal zoo. It would be more space efficient to simply have the complete genetic codes of animals - perhaps in digital form, not even as actual samples - and at most have them recreated in some hyper-realistic virtual environment for alien ethologists to study. - Wait, that is getting very close to the simulation hypothesis.

      What if Earth today is a simulation of am alien's history?
      The openworm project was able to clone the brain of a flatworm and use it to run what was essentially the first truly free willed robot by virtue of the fact that it was run by a brain. IBM later on cloned a mouse brain, although it wasn't able to get it to run at full speed yet. Then again, does it really have to run at full speed? From the perspective of the mouse within the simulation time is running normally.
      Now, if we can simulate the brain of a mouse it's only a matter of time before we can simulate the brain of a human. So what happens if we clone the brain of a newborn baby and copy it multiple times over and just place it with in a simulated world? Give it some starting resources and let it do its thing. Then every time the simulated people reproduce just load up a new copy of a baby brain into the simulation and it will be built upon the experiences of the world in which it lives. Eventually it will form a civilization that you can observe and you can gain first-hand knowledge on how people develop civilizations. And since you'd be using the brain if your own species it would be fairly accurate.
      Of course, if that's the reality of things good luck getting any rights from your creators. And hope that the simulation is running as some large-scale project where they wants to Archive everything and not on some child's computer game.
      When I was a child I ran simulations. An old game called creatures by cyber life, now defunct, but had artificial biology so it made its own decisions. I saved all the files, but I didn't run the simulation forever. Maybe a sufficiently advanced civilization would have a very very lifelike version of The Sims in which case you better hope that the child running this game doesn't play The Sims the way your typical human child does.

    • @squirlmy
      @squirlmy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Elliandr "first truly free willed robot" This is an unscientific phrase that is highly dependent on the philosophical point that "free will" actually exists. Through much of history the hypothesis of "free will" has been used to justify how a beneficent Creator could allow evil to exist in the universe. Science itself doesn't favor such a view over determinism. The idea of a History Simulation is interesting, but the simulators would have to be lacking in compassion to run such events as the Black Plague or the Holocaust on sentient beings over and over again just to collect data. As you point out yourself with the comparison to a child's computer game. If there is a benign Creator granting Free Will, then comprehensive historical simulations in that universe would be fairly close to "demonic" in intent, as nearly opposite to the Creator's Will. Or, if the end justifies the means in running simulations, I think that end is completely unknowable from inhabitants of the simulation (possibly us). It would take "divine intervention" from the simulators to inform us of the nature of the simulation and motivations behind it.

      Space efficiency might not be much of a concern for an interstellar civilisation, though.

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the zoo hypothesis and the simulation hypothesis are not mutually exclusive, and some parts of the two hypotheses are actually synergistic.
      "free will" / determinism and consciousness are all very poorly understood scientifically right now... partly because experiments that may shed light on these topics tend to be morally dubious. making a "free willed" robot/sim may not actually engender the type of "self-aware consciousness" we consider ourselves to have; nor does such an act necessarily have moral implications for an advanced/alien civilisation. we keep terrariums of entire ant colonies - is that immoral? if a matroshka brain civilisation tried to explain the multiverse to us, we'd likely seem as clueless/lowly to them as ants seem to us.
      furthermore, "morality" itself is subjective and likely an outgrowth of social evolution (i.e. to keep the peace among violent apes by establishing baselines for fairness). simulated sentience can logically be deemed to violate no moral codes at all, or we could evolve further to relax our standards of morality altogether: some ends may justify the means.
      what if sim zoos are necessary to "cultivate" higher consciousness in some way? that the data generated by sim zoo sentience actually feeds some giga-algorithm's quantum random number generator to fuel a multiversal consciousness? there are some huge gaps in our knowledge in this realm, so who knows?

    • @creativedesignation7880
      @creativedesignation7880 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Statistically it is more likely that we discover a past civilisation exactly that way. The slice of the sphere of space that surrounds us gets larger the further it is away, that means a more distant slice of sphere will contain more star systems than one closer to us. And obviously the greater the distance, the more signal delay, therefore the bigger the chance the signal source is already destroyed.

      Given the fact that it will take no more than a couple centuries (or less) for sentient machines to arise, and it would take Voyager several thousand years to reach even the nearest star system, I'd say that's the least of our worries.

    Not gonna lie, John, I absolutely love these Fermi Paradox videos. So many possible solutions... I've always favored the Interdict scenario (too much Star Trek and the Prime Directive when I was younger, I suppose, but it makes sense to me), so this has been a fascinating watch. Thank you, and keep 'em coming!

      @@InterviewsWithTheAncients Hello. If you take a moment and re-read what I said in my comment, you will undoubtedly note that I made no mention about people lying about anything. I have no idea if they are lying or simply mistaken. I like billions of other people have a rather high quality camera in my phone though, and I'll be sure to post any images of unusual activity that I spot. In high quality video. I'd love to be proven wrong about the universe for all intents and purposes being empty (if we can never communicate, it doesn't matter if they are out there or not). Trillions of galaxies, and most of them forever beyond our horizon. Our local group looks... empty of any Interstellar activity. And on another note... any species that could get here from another star undetected, wouldn't need to abduct anyone. Kind of an odd notion, considering the level of medical technology they'd have to have to even make it here.. in fact, abductions and experimentation in such a way seems.. rather primitive. A bit unbecoming of an advanced species, no?
