Thank you, you are the first I came across that explain the layers so well. Others seem to show how to do it without clear explanations. You are a great teacher.
This man really can explain complicated things in way that is very impressive - even for me who‘s language is not english. I can‘t recommend your videos enough for LR and PS and I am really learning a lot from them!
Of all the tutorials on masks I have seen, yours is by far the best. It's like all the puzzle pieces have fallen into place finally after alll these years and I get the picture now! (Pun intended 😊 ). I don’t have to create cheat sheets now that I understand how it works. Swinging constantly between Illustrator, Indesign, Photoshop, AutoCad, Excel, and a dozen other programs on a regular basis, you'd need cheat sheet! Thank you and congratulations on a fantastic video tutorial.
This was so helpful. I've seen so many tutorials explaining layers and masks but this one is the only one that really explained it in a way I actually understand. So, thank you for that :)
I’m just gonna attempt to only do one layer then a general adjustment layer, then fine tune with masks, so it doesn’t get all confusing! Thanks for explaining clearly how they all work!
Thank you for another informative video! As I start to dip my toe into Photoshop, I find your videos and way of explaining this extremely helpful. Things are slowly becoming less intimidating. Have a great day!
Mr. Morganti, Thanks very much for "Photoshop Layers & Masks EXPLAINED! ", very informative and as always, easy to understand. I'm primarily a crystal and mineral guy and this video opens several options to further improve my results. Thanks again. Cheers Bob Germano
This was amazingly helpful, clearly and methodically explained at a pace I could follow - this kind of well done instructional You Tube video is hard to find! I'll be watching alot more from you!! Thanks so much!!
Excellent. I have used Photoshop only when I can't do what I want in Lightroom. Because I use PS so infrequently, I forget a lot. I loved this tutorial because it is explained so well and is so precise !!! Thanks !!!
Many thanks from an Englishman catching up on PhotoShop skills whilst sat in a pool bar in Greece! I'm studying with the Open College for Arts in the UK. Great course, but sometimes basic skills need video's like yours to really embed concepts. Thank you.
I've just started using Photoshop and LRC. Your way of explaining what and how is just at the right pace. I can see that many others agree! I'm subscribing and I'll be checking out your other tutorials. Thank you.
Thanks, Anthony......another fine video. A question on Adjustment Layers. If one wants only to affect the image below, holding down the ALT key (PC) between the Layers brings up a down arrow, which I presume means that that Adjustment will only affect the image below....No? And therefore other Adjustment can be made in the same manner.
Just finished watching your tutorials on the Virtual Summit 2022. You do an amazing job of explaining how to use both PS and LR. This is a very good tutorial on layers and masks. Thanks so much!
Beacuse you need to create one layer first, than to cover your first layer you have to create another chain of sublayers. When you have created more layers, than you can start using content aware fill, content aware move, and other functions in order to get your desired result. In this way you spend less time and you get valuable resources for your job. If you are a designer or you user -in photoshop-than you have facilities in the photoshop ,tugether with others app. at the end-you have created a beuatiful work frame and yo will definetely have succes and be recognized as a valuable and talented editing star.
Hello Mr. Morganti. I had a quick question. (great content by the way.) Is there a way to move the scroll bar in Photoshop to the left side. See I have a Wacom Table Cintique 22 and I am left handed. My pen holder is set up on the left but I have cross over my keyboard that is in front of me and it would so much better of a workflow if the scroll bar was on the left
In contrast to other "beginner" or introductory" tutorials to masks and layers, this tutorial demonstrates the fundamentals using simple elements. It doesn't confuse or bewilder novices by plunging off the deep end with all the many, many features and fancy stuff you can do with layers and masks. KISS.
This is great. I am new to Photoshop so it has been very helpful. I have a related question. I have an image that has water in three areas of the photo (river through Gooseneck Park in Utah). I did a sky replacement due to a dull sky in the evening. The sunset sky is warm, but the water is still very bright due to the bland sky reflection from before. Thanks to this video I tried adding a copy of the sky as a layer below the copy of layer 01. I tried a soft brush to let the warmth show through but it looks terrible due to the overlapping brush strokes. I was trying to use an object selection for each bright water area to make them transparent. When I choose one of the water areas, I can't seem to get to the next step successfully. I am stuck on trying to find a way forward. Is this something you could do a video on?
I don’t know if you want to get deeper into Photoshop but one thing I’ve never really “got” is all the parameters of a brush (in Photoshop). Even the simple parameters like “flow” I never really “got”. I generally just fiddle around somewhat aimlessly until I get what I want but there is no direction or strategy. I just randomly fiddle with all the settings until it seems to be doing what I want. I would be nice if I actually understood what each parameter does in practical terms.

Of all the tutorials on masks I have seen, yours is by far the best. It's like all the puzzle pieces have fallen into place finally after alll these years and I get the picture now! Best. Explanation. of Layers. and Masks. in Photoshop. Ever!!!! Thank you!!!!!😀
By far the BEST video that explain in clear and simple terms (using images) how masks and filters work.
Great tutorial, I was so confused until now on how masks and layers work. Thanks for helping with this huge learning curve.
The most clear and concise description I have seen. Thank you.
Thank you. Best explanation ever on the topic of layers and masks. I FINALLY get it.
You are a natural teacher!
I’m just gonna attempt to only do one layer then a general adjustment layer, then fine tune with masks, so it doesn’t get all confusing! Thanks for explaining clearly how they all work!
This is probably the best layers tutorial. You are clear in your explanation and concise. Thank you!

Can you make a selection first, then open adjustment layer? So then the adjustment will apply only to selected area.
Very clear explanation Thanks a lot for that Anthony 😄
Thanks for the video. You explain your processes very well.
Brilliant video and well explained-big thumbs up👍
Great video Anthony. I'm gradually getting better with PS but this video explains these tools very clearly - well done!
My friend, I skipped Photoshop 101 and this has really helped. Cheers m8

Thank you very much for this video .. U helped my headache go ... thanks once again ..
Fantastic explanation 💛
Love your video and tutorials, but what computer hardware system are you using. Please share
Thank you so much for this video this has been very helpful I’m new to PS and need all the help I can get
Very cool content and I like the way you teach!
Superb video. Why are all layers not smart layers by default?
Beacuse you need to create one layer first, than to cover your first layer you have to create another chain of sublayers. When you have created more layers, than you can start using content aware fill, content aware move, and other functions in order to get your desired result. In this way you spend less time and you get valuable resources for your job. I meed lamens terms and this is brilliant. thank u
Another amazing tutorial
So if black is poking a hole, would using gray in a mask create a ghost of sorts? Or would I be better off playing with opacity to allow that?
Great tutorial!
really good video! thanks
