Masking in Lightroom has taken on some changes over the years and it is now a very powerful tool that will be beneficial to many photographers. Masking allows Lightroom users to select certain sections of an image and make adjustments to that part only. A so called ‘local adjustment’. Using masking you can apply colour and tonal adjustments to specific parts or zones of an image.
In the newest version of Adobe Lightroom, you can select objects, the sky, people and even down to specifics like the whites of eyes.
In this tutorial we’ll take a closer look at Lightroom’s masking features while using object select, sky select and the most impressive, people select!

Thank You Sir, I have watched this most excellent Video about three times. Each time I have learned a lot. I am an old guy in My 80's. I appreciate Your mild mannered and not too fast video such that I am able to follow along reasonably well. I understand the masking concept, and think it is amazing. Selecting, and switching betweeen units, example making person, then going to a body part is taking me a few times to capture. I do want to Thank You. Unlike a lot of Videos, Yours is so much easier to follwo along. I want to Thank You for this excellent Presntation.
Thanks Tom, you are welcome 👍
An excellent video on the LR masking. The usual high standard with very clear and helpful instructions.
Thank you Ken 😊 🙏
Excellent tutorial. As a Brit I picked up on all the humour (with a U). Americans may miss that part but the instruction, which was excellent, will not be missed, Very well done Sir.
You are welcome Roderick 👍
This feature is awesome. As a photographer with little time to master Photoshop, I've depended on an online service to do some of this work. But just this week, this Lr feature was so easy and so effective that I was able to do all the edits myself on some family portraits that featured, as RAW images, overexposed sky and underexposed subjects.
Just saw the masking panel icon couple days ago on Lightroom. Checking out a few tutorials here and there. This one taught me the most so far. In a single short video the most important features of masking that covers the most common scenarios. Thank you so much.
You are welcome Jeet 👍
Just updated Lightroom and this was the perfect tutorial for the new object and people selection tools, cheers Marc! And as someone who enjoys the courses, tutorials and assignments at the School of Photography, all I can say is this is typical of the excellent standard of training offered by Marc and his team 🙂👍
Thanks Brendan, appreciate the comments and glad you liked it 👍
New subscriber. I learned a TON here. Honestly I was completely skeptical going in and humbly and happily wrong after about my skepticism. I’ll be sharing this with a Facebook group I run. Thank you

You're very welcome!
excellent tutorial !
Thanks 😊
Excellent video as always nice to see you doing a bit of creative editing. It’s amazing the difference it does make it took me a long time to realise that the editing process is just as important as the photo taken in. I’m not very good with pen and paper, love the sound of your courses, but I don’t know whether I would be able to keep up as my reading and writing are not very good at all. Only reason I am writing this is it’s on a iPad Pro and the predictive text is pretty damn good most of the time thanks a lot. Look forward to your next one.❤
You're welcome Andy. The courses are video based so you should be fine 🙂
Excellent tutorial!

Excellent video. This will help me where I was struggling. I had taken photos of trees against the sky and when I chose mask for the sky it didn't pick up the sky showing through the branches. So thanks for the video.
You're very welcome! 😊
Just became a subscriber. You are a good instructor, and I look forward to learning from you in the future. We talk a little differently here in Texas, but I understood you just fine! 😊
Welcome aboard 👍🙏
new subs. great video❤
Thanks, welcome aboard 👍
I could listen the Marc all day.
😊🙏
Really good for a beginner
Thanks 😊
Sorry to say, but my lightroom classic software most of the time tells me that it cannot find sky, even when there is a clear contrast between sky and the rest of the pic. Thanks for your informative videos! I have just downloaded this pic and got the same result: lightroom shows an error message, no sky found!?
great content ,, which version of lrc is this?? thank you!
2023 version
tell me about version lightroom
Great video - thank you! One question: I've noticed that you don't seem to touch the clarity and dehaze options in masking. Any reason for that?
Not really Danny, sometimes I use those sliders, sometimes I don't, just depends on image 👍
Very helpful tutorial. I have been a member of KelbyOne for 4 or 5 years now and like Scott Kelby's tutorial videos a lot, but, in his LR 2023 update, he did not explain new masking features as well as you did. Thank you.

7:13 Hold down option if you have a Mac
Agreed Masking in LRC is brilliant and far far quicker than any other platform.
As shown by your landscape one has to take great care when there is mist or fogs or water reflections - I find that I have to spend time (a lot of time) fixing edges, which one can easily do on the AI generated mask. One has to examine the mask to ensure that the AI has correctly masked or not masked the sky when one has images of trees and other diverse objects; same for hair and feathers.
Thanks Andy 👍
Awesome tutorial! Much appreciatedI was wondering Iam so frustrated. Cant you tell me real quick. I know how to isolate a subject in my image with lightroom 2023 AI from background now all I want to do is save that isolated subject as a transparent PNG. Is there a fast simple way to do that? Maybe you can recommened a tutorial or just explain real quick. Thanks so much:) IcloneFun
Hi, you can find out more here www.theschoolofphotography.com/courses/lightroom-course-online thanks 😊
Did you have to add a mask every time you wanted to change a different element on the face?
Yes, more details here www.theschoolofphotography.com/courses/lightroom-course-online
27:20 no sharpen of the eyes? Great video, perhaps one of the best on YT. Thank you.
so where is location of masking panel?
Hi I am masking backgrounds for professional profiles once done how do I save it and export
Hi, it's taught here www.theschoolofphotography.com/courses/lightroom-course-online
Just curious, why do you use highlights to darken the sky rather than exposure?
Hi John, all explained here www.theschoolofphotography.com/courses/lightroom-course-online
Im having issues with mine. Pretty clear portraits of people. When I go to mask it shows the person as available but when I select it, its just a giant rectangle boundary.
Hi, find out more here www.theschoolofphotography.com/courses/lightroom-course-online
i cant figure out how to have the masking tool bar pop up when I click on the brush. I have no tool bar for when the item is selected. Do you know how to find the menu (the new one that looks like photoshop) that pops up when i click the brush tool. Thanks.
Hi, not quite sure what you mean but you can find out more here www.theschoolofphotography.com/courses/lightroom-course-online
I've run into a strange masking problem where I can mask the facial skin of a particular subject (auto selected by LR), but sharpening just that part has absolutely no effect whatsoever, while everything else (exposure, etc.) can be changed. I'm flummoxed.
That's to do with Layers Bob. Watch this for more information th-cam.com/video/zj9fxeJvpjo/w-d-xo.html
@@theschoolofphotography , thanks but I'm working in Lightroom with no layer options
Is Lightroom free all the time? Because I’ve read so many comment of people that it’s only a 7 days free trial and after that you have to take premium subscription. But the internet is saying that it’s a free app but that you can get access to more tools and presets when you get premium. I’m on a low budget now and cannot afford a premium subscription. I don’t really care for the presets and more tools, as long as I can use the auto, light, color, effect and detail option for free, than I’m cool with it. But please let me know if I can still use the app after the 7 days trial.
Hi, it's a paid app I'm afraid
Thanks for your reply. I seriously don’t know what to believe. One says I could keep using the free version, other says it isn’t free. For now I’ve been using the free version with no problem but still, I’m not waiting one day when opening the app and suddenly it says you have to pay and get subscription😅 anyway thanks for the reply.
Can you masking off line or does it need Internet?
Yes you can
@@theschoolofphotography thank you for getting back to me.
best masking tutorial to me (❁´◡`❁)
Happy to hear that! 😊
can not download the images
Check your spam folder, and you will need to unzip the download before use.
I'm hating it to the death. I wish they gave us users an option whether to use the feature or not. I want my simple brush overlay rather than this shit. If I wanted to use overlays I could use photoshop already. This forced change killed my workflow.
£10 per month, what a rip off. lets get back to paying up front for a product . really angry my lightroom cannot be upgraded even if I offer to pay. and giving images to an on line AI, that is madness!
