I have used PS for ages but only as an adjunct to photography. I could never “get” layers. Thank you, Colin, so much for this. I was always too embarrassed to admit my dyslexia with layer masks.

I'm an illustrator and though not a beginner with Photoshop, I've not used masks at all so far. Having checked out a few tutorials on the subject, yours stands out head and shoulders above the others for its clarity and excellent teaching. Thankyou so much for taking the time! Now I want to see all of your tutorials!!
Ha! Same here. Far from new to photoshop but never really messed with masks until jumping into making t shirt designs recently. Definitely a well done, easy to grasp tutorial.

Thanks Colin, for sure the most difficult element to get my head around. Watching other "tutorials" made it more confusing. So far, this has been the easiest and most concise tutorial yet, of course, I will keep this in my save file as I am sure I will need to keep watching it. Excellent basic tutorial. I’ve been using PS for 6-7 years just to make custom, single fold note cards with photo images on the card face. Most cards require little or no image manipulation and as a consequence I’ve never used layer masks. I’m now finding myself doing more image isolation and have reasoned that layer masks can be a very useful tool. In that regard your tutorial has been a big help. Thanks a million after messing with my brains for the past 3 years I've actually got a grasp of Masks in PS due to the way you described it in great depth but in a simple manner. Please continue with this beginners tutorial as I've been actually intimidated to open PS in case I mess up which I always did till NOW, so a huge 👍up to you.

I'm another oldie, just turned 78 in January 2021. I've been learning Photoshop cs6 since about 2013; layer masks have always evaded me until this week--you and one other out of about 30 other layer mask tutorials have finally said things in a way that sunk into my brain. Thank you so much for your efforts at teaching. I'm a pro-photographer since 1994 film days, but not a pro-editor. With digital, we need to learn the editing too, so these tutorials are priceless for us!
This is so well done, thank you so much. Such skilled teaching. I love how you take a concept and then scaffold to more advanced concepts and then show practical applications of the concepts. So many other videos skip steps and are difficult to follow. A project of mine required a fundamental understanding of layers and layer masks. After these videos I was able to successfully use an Alpha Channel mask to eliminate a complex background, a problem that had vexed me for 18 months! Thanks again!

Earnest thanks man! Even though I've been using PS since version 5.0 (way before digital cameras or even film scanners) I had never been able to understand just what layer masks did. It certainly is a superb tool and simplifies work tremendously. It must be the simplest way to fuse images across layers but yours is the only toto that got through my thick skull! Again, most grateful.

Thank you so much, Colin you made it easier to follow how Layer Masks work. Not as a putdown but simply an observation, not all instructors show the (how to) do it step-by-step, they show that they can use them. Some of those instructors know how to do what they do very well, therefore it is like second nature to them and as a result, they do it so fast that they leave out the how-to and so I never really get the lesson. Again, thank you for staying focused on the steps to achieve the goal.

The 'Top' and 'Bottom' layers explanation seems to do it for me - something I'd always thought intuitively was the case but other tutorials seem to muddle it up and make me more confused.
