  • This is part one of the presentation that Rich gave to the tropical Beekeepers on February 13, 2024. The topic was swarm control, but as you can tell from the questions, the discussion covered a lot of other topics.

The apis mellifera mellifera is gone in North America since the 1990s. They found a fossil in Nevada in a dry lake bed in 2017 and it is exactly the same as apis mellifera mellifera but we still decided to name it apis mellifera neoartica. Alot of old Spanish explorer's writings documented trading indiginous people's North American beeswax for European goods.

??? I responded to this weeks ago, it must have mis-posted. Currently there is a project to look for A.m.m. in remote areas of the Everglades. Given that we still had large populations in 1950, it seems likely that we may still find them since they have found pockets in Europe despite over 180 years of cross breeding. The new lab should help that process considerably. Of course the advance of A.m. scutellata may do what the Italians couldn't since they like similar cavities and can be very swarmy. Their temperament is so similar that it probably doesn't make any difference.

Very good Rich . I bet your elbows are sore for all the times you went around an around to get back to what you were trying to saw about swarming but it sounds like they we’re getting into your class . I know everyone is different in there bee keeping an what works for them. I was just wanting to saw I switched to screen bottom bottom boards AN screen inter covers . Here in NC I use both year round an by my trial and error I have found in my honey season that the screen inter cover it helps the bees to dry the nectar down better or faster. Also I do not use the IPM boards in summer season in my screen bottom boards but I do in winter. Also I am testing using a I thinking it is 3” fan in the top inter cover while in my honey flow season also . It is PULLING air through the hive not blowing air on the bees . I use it for a little while last year on one hive to help cure or dry the nectar an I think it did help but as of then not enough useage to really tell the full story yet .🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. Thanks Rich . Sorry so long of a response. . Thanks

Put that fan in a small bathroom with a dehumidifier and you will be amazed at how quickly it dries nectar.
