Well it's a bit deeper than him dragging ass in his training. It was a combination of a psychological and spiritual (non-religious) problem. After this scene, Rocky and Apollo did another beach run in which Rocky ultimately just stops running. At which point Apollo tells Duke, "It's over...it's over!" Afterwards, remember the talk Rocky and Adrian had on the beach (Rocky III) when she flat out asked him, "Why did you come here?" Once Rocky found out that Mickey had been "carrying him" through his ten titles defenses since beating Apollo, that told Rocky that Mickey didn't believe Rocky could carry on as a fighter the way he did with Apollo. He told Rocky, "Bc kid, the beating you took from Apollo should've killed you and it didn't. It was my job to keep you winning and to keep you healthy." So, Rocky went along with it but inside he doubted himself now and his self confidence was non-existent. He figured if Mickey didn't think he had it anymore, then more than likely he doesn't, bc Mickey was like a Father figure to Rocky. Once Apollo saw Rocky's lack of desire to train, but not knowing why, which infuriated him, THAT'S why he said, "THERE IS NO TOMORROW!". People forget that 95% of the Rocky movies isn't about boxing. It's a psychological, spiritual (religious at times) and soul searching journey's. The whole saga flows for a reason, it's not just choppy Part I....Part II.....Part III...etc. It's a man's journey through life as a fighter but the fighting part is not the forefront of what the movies are about. That's just the product of his profession.

It’s a movie that on so many levels, instills heart, determination, resilience & perseverance, although number 3 & 4 had to evolve with other plots they too have a message of courage, compassion & overcoming adversity… Just a masterpiece for it’s time…. All the way from Sydney 🇦🇺 I could literally recite the dialogue I’ve watched it that many times along with the other movies and remakes…

My favorite Rocky Movie. The message, acting and music were and still are very inspirational. The Rocky Theme and Eye of the Tiger are still my favorite "Go Get Them" Songs to uplift my mood.

Apollo didn't have the edge to take the power punches from clubber and couldn't of kept the pase and power up to eventually win the fight that's why he chose to help rocky coz he saw a friend loses all he had for the wrong reasons and he couldn't stand that so he helped and then tried to fight rocky wiv no cameras or anythin and so called won that little scufful and then went on to face Drago and got the fucked ko'd so he new rocky was the better fighter in the end

decades ago, i read the book. Apollo would have had to fight several times to have a shot at Clubber, in order to be a ranked contender. And he was saving himself for one last fight. With Rocky. Which we found out recently, he won;) Then he came back for one more and lost..,....
