Bought this book in Eason’s (Dublin:)) and love it. Newish to jazz but after a few mins I found myself coming up with direct substitution exercises for myself (or “chord movement”). Brilliant book for building up chord knowledge and geography of the fretboard. Won’t be everyone’s taste though.
So are the chord categories is relative to its functional harmony to key of C or it is all C chord. Say... Major Category: is it all major chords in key of C or just all variation of C chord. Likewise Seventh Category: is it C7 chord variation or all available dominant chord in key of C? Minor Category seems variation of C minor chord and not the minor chords available in key of C. Its a good source of chords form but I find it confusing how to use it relative to its functional harmony.

I am a bit confused. You played only root chords, but there are other chords in each group. For example, under major chords he has some minor chords as well (e.g. third chord in a group)... does that suggest I can play those minor chords instead of a standard C major?

Yes, There are diatonic chords within C major scale universe -some of them are major, minor, dominant, half-diminished. 3.Yes, you may pick a minor chord as an upper structure e.g. Em7/C = Cmaj9 4. Jody Fisher and Jane Miller have wonderful books covering this topic from start to some advance examples, as well. 5. Joe Pass is a legend and such a great musician to look up to for sure. Keep at it.

I wish that he labelled what each chord was. I guess the way to use this book is to play each chord from left to right?
