Normally I would say that 2101 Will never be restored, but they are going to restore 3985 and 5511, so anything is possible

Forty-five year old Kodachrome holds up well! I have to correct a couple of things. The Reading T-1s were a work-around by the Reading to get newer, larger power during the WWII restrictions of the War Production Board, which rationed the manufacture of things like locomotives for the war effort. Yes, the 30 T-1s were "rebuilt" from I10sa 2-8-0s in the Reading's own shops, but really only used a small part of those engines, enough that they could say they were allowed rebuilds, not new engines. Most of them, including the frames and drivers, were new. The four that were saved (2100, '01, 02, '24) were kept for the railroad's "Rambles" excursion program that lasted into the early 1960s. Then they were all sold. 2100 and 2101 were not set aside as such, they were sold to Striegle scrap yard in Baltimore, which is where Ross Rowland found them when he went looking for power for his "American Freedom Train" project. He bought both, decided the 2101 was the better of the two, and used the 2100 for parts. At the end of the second season of the Chessie Steam Specials in 1978 the 2101 was stored in the C&O roundhouse in Stevens, KY, which burned to the ground in 1979, probably damaging the 2101 beyond restoration. Rowland traded the 2101 to Chessie System, which at that time owned the B&O Railroad Museum, and they in-turn traded him even for C&O 614 from the museum's collection. 2101 was then cosmetically restored as AFT #1 and resides in the museum in Baltimore to this day.

I wonder if that K5LA whistle still exists and if it does, I honestly think it should be returned to Ross Rowland and be used on sister engine 2100 which is undergoing restoration by the American steam preservation society in Ohio. Ross is currently a member of this organization, and possibly going to be one of the engineers at the throttle. It would be great to hear the voice of 2101 again on an existing T1 class northern.

2-8-0 not 2-8-2 and 2101 was never actually used on the rambler but was kept as backup power

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Chessie Steam Special toured Chessie in 1977

Yes, it toured in 1977 (I rode it from the B&O's Barr Yard at Riverdale, IL to Garrett, IN and back in the summer of '77).

Reading 2101 pulled the AFT and Chessie Steam Special. It didn't pull a third season Chessie Steam Special because 2101 was badly damaged in a roundhouse fire . Its just resting around at B&O Railroad Museum and could one day get restored.

All that heavy industry around Pittsburgh and the jobs are just gone. Many of these old mill towns outside of Pittsburgh are 3rd world now. Nothing left but abandoned houses and drug addicts.
