  • "Iron Derby" is a terrific look at Southern Pacific's Cab Forward locomotives in all their glory.
Beautiful color film and special railroad history shot by the most prominent rail photographers of the era.

I am amazed of how much better the digitalized image quality is compared to the 1990’s “Cab Forward Over Donner Pass” DVD.
I can actually see well the color of each coach.
I guess I must get a new updated copy.

Some things just never change. People are lined up today to see UP 4014 as much as they were to see SP 4274 60 years ago.

Steam locomotives fascinate us in today's world of diesel electrics.

Were the cab forwards all oil-fired?

The pictures are already great, but as always, the audio editing lags miles behind the quality of the picture editing.
Simply putting some puffing sound under the video doesn't cut it anymore, but especially those scenes in which the locomotive thunders past somewhere in the middle of nowhere at full speed, but the sound in the foreground coming from a slowly pulling shunting locomotive, are an absolute no-go and a joke on the viewer.
