  • What happens when molten glass meets cold water? Explosive stress! In this video I create Prince Rupert's droplets from soda lime, colored soda lime, and borosilicate (lab glass). I subject them to a drop test of 50lb's to test their durability and snap them with my fingers to feel a shower of silica debris.

Hope to see more videos from you Matt, you inspired me when I was first starting out in torchwork. Now I own a business making glass art! Peace ✌️

Great video Matt! I really enjoy ur videos! I love science/chemistry yt videos but I’m also looking at starting glass/flame work to make marbles, paperweights and small sculptures, maybe beads and pipes too, but the pipes I still need to look into the legality here in australia, I think they are legal as long as they don’t contain any cannabis/drug residues in them, but it might not be worth making them if the police feel they need to search my house because I’m making them 🤷‍♂️😂 but yeah love ur vids and how u try to incorporate some science and experimentation into the stuff ur making 🍻👊🥰

i have always wondered if boro would work as a drop, used to make soda lime ones and pop them in a ziplock bag to show how crazy stress in glass is. thanks for this video!

Very interesting and educational! I like that you apply the scientific method to learn something new. Did you try the impact strength on the bulb of the borosilicate droplets? I assume they are considerably weaker than the soda-lime droplets.

hi mat an idea for you would hte price ruperts drops maintain therre reslience if you anneal them in the kiln. or do u think they will explode in the kiln ?

I believe the resilience comes from the internal stress, so I would assume annealing would remove that stress making them ordinary glass droplets. It sounds like a good experiment, I'll have to try it!

The bird sounds are kinda annoying tbh. You should make some Shorts about the Rupert's drop I've seen videos like that do really well

Lol. Are you constantly annoyed or do you just avoid going outside?
