Anything concerning AI is not and will never be for the benefit of artists. As it stands, being an artist is seen by society under capitalism the same as being poor. They will never respect us or our craft, thus they have no reason to make a tool that benefits them when they can make a tool that profits them completely regardless of how artists feel. It's why even businesses that are supposed to supposedly support artists and the like all eventually end up spitting on our faces anyways. It's to the point that I honestly don't trust most of these new "tools" meant to "aid" in illustration. The only people I can see using this are the ones that will screenshot your work in progress to steal it. Good thing is that unlike a lot of other AI art at least an artist will be able to tell visually that someone stole their art for their AI slop.
But why care about artists as a client when AI can do a superior job for a fraction of the cost? Artists provide a service that just isn't cost efficient enough for most people anymore so of course they're losing jobs, just like it's been happening in every other industry (which artists didn't care about until it started affecting them lol)
You're only parroting braindead takes spewed by people with 0 understanding on how image diffusion works lol AI tools don't end with basic apps like Midjourney where you can barely even tinker with any tools or parameters. Look up ControlNets, IPAdapter, T2I Adapters, LoRAs, DoRAs, finetunes, ComfyUI nodes/workflows, inpainting, outpainting and other tools that you can use with local image generation models. They allow you to precisely control and guide the image generation in whatever way you want, it's basically image generation + Photoshop on steroids in one IF you're tech savvy enough. My current client hired me for a series of illustrations for his book (audiobook release specifically) and I trained character LoRAs for his characters, then a style LoRA for the artstyle he wanted to replicate and I can create completely custom scenes with the characters performing whatever actions he desires, with any background, details, composition, color palette, light source, perspective etc he wants and he's very satisfied with the results. No wonder artists are losing jobs when they don't even know what they're going up against lol. And remember, the current AI models and tools are the worst they're ever gonna be, they will only get better and they are improving FAST.
@@Smug-Smirk Because it doesn't lol. Now I won't deny, it probably does a better job than say some amateur hobby artist but I think it's ridiculous to try and claim AI art is superior to that of say, a pro. But if what you consider art is solely stickmen, then sure loll. But even addressing cost, I really don't think it's about that. People will gladly bug handmade goods over say, Temu or a reseller on depop despite them being cheaper because they are able to recognize that they *deserve* it. There are artists with great work whose commissions are literally 20-60 dollars. And not the exaggerated millions people love claiming artists apparently gouge. Like I said, in today's current capitalistic society, we just don't respect artists or their craft. As such even if all artists collectively charged only 11$ for all of their work, regardless of the detail people would still go to AI. Why? Because despite consuming art on the daily (whether you realize it or not), and in spite so many claiming to love and appreciate art and artists, we really don't respect artists at all. And most people won't want to pay for a service they won't respect.
Honestly aside from them being unethical, and bad, and theft, and inherently uncreative, “Ai tools” suck on their own merits. I’m not against certain Ai tools like a context aware flat color fill, or that same thing for animation where you do the key frames and it flats the inbetweens. Tedious parts that just take time. For 3D, I’d love better retopology tools or a smarter quick UV function. But 1 they all source their training data from unethical places and without consent, and 2 these “tools” are not being created for, or by, artists. I feel like they only exist for people that hate making art, in which case… why are you making art?
this app is probably for speeding up comic, manga and webtoon making (i know, they're all the same)... making comics is a deadly task even with passion, so i understand if someone uses it specifically for this type of job.
I said this to someone else but like, no... Webtoon artists are already using 3D models. Like a LOT. This isn't doing anything 3D models aren't already doing, and 3D models are doing it faster, too... Having to line and flat every panel and then throw each panel into the generator and HOPE it gets things right and then bring it back into Clip and throw a gradient over it sounds like such a time sink...
I'll just say this and not elaborate, disregarding the theft part of training the AI tools, generative AI is just a parasite to art and should not under any circumstances be a thing.
I dislike doing sketches but have to sketch for better lineart as I enjoy doing it. As for coloring I have both hate and love sometimes based on mood. I like lighting more than shading..
Ify!! Shading and rendering is like the magical part of drawing and making digital illustrations!! I don't like line art, but my rendering is enough to make up for it lol.
I actually dislike rendering and shading the most so I tend to just line and base my pics. Solution: learn how to render. Lol of course I find it not fun if I'm bad at it, that doesn't mean giving up and getting AI to do it, especially since I can probably still do a better job cause I have the ability to choose where the light is coming from. Edit: also making art that is unshaded or minimally shaded has a lot of charm to it as well. Some of my art looks like straight up screenshots from a cartoon since animation usually skimps on shading for a variety of reasons. Also, I'm impatient and rendering is a very long process. Art style is about finding solutions to your personal problems. Shaky hands? Use smoothing or lean into the shakiness or sketchiness of the lines. Don't like rendering? Use flats and gradients. Learning to make these solutions look intentional and good is how you develop your style! Giving up and handing over rendering to an AI takes away your ability to personalise and grow from your own disadvantages. Also, there is no better feeling than being bad at something and then becoming good at it. I love animation because I am bringing things to life, if I gave up on the craft and handed it over to AI I wouldn't love it anymore. Art is about problem solving, really seeing things for the first time, and it's about the process of creation and bringing things to life. If you only care about the final product then it isn't art, it's just that - a product. You are not an artist, you are a businessman. And even artists like me who don't currently enjoy rendering - clearly the kind of artist this tool targets - would cringe at the idea of giving this to AI. Where's the fun in that? Not to mention the lack of consistency or internal logic, the art theft, etc. it's just unsatisfying to ask AI to do it. There are so many things AI could do to genuinely help artists learn, complete tedious tasks etc. but they choose this? Sheesh.... Edit2: the lineart tool is even worse. It completely and fundamentally changes the content of the original image beyond recognition. I don't even understand how it could possibly take these sketches and turn them into what it does. Making a sketch clean up tool SHOULD be fairly straight forward, how did they fuck it up so much? Also, as someone who enjoys the lining process and cleaning up my sketches and stuff I feel about this tool similarly to how you seem to feel about the rendering tool. There are much better ways to avoid lining an artwork than this too, arguably it's way easier to avoid lining a piece if you love rendering and I find it hard to believe that there are any artists out there who both hate lining and hate rendering. Like... They just enjoy sketching? I mean sure but the only people I know who genuinely only like the sketching stage are people who are at the beginning of their journeys and have a bunch to learn and are overwhelmed and self conscious. Those people are the last people who would benefit from these tools cause they just need to learn. A lot of artists love sketching but seeing an artwork go from a sketch to a final piece is so rewarding. Anyway, yeah, the tool is bad beyond belief in just about every way a lining tool could be bad. Plus! People who mostly enjoy sketching and base colours do things like just cleaning up their sketches into a lineart or they make messy art on purpose. THESE TOOLS LITERALLY SERVE NO ONE EXCEPT ART THIEVES AND BUSINESSES!!!
Ai for art and creativity just doesn't work. Sure, it can help with generating ideas, and I guess it is good for inspiration. But it just has no human touch to it. It's a bot and will continue to create lifeless uncanny images... not art. Artists has so much expression in each stroke, and each stroke is on purpose, something bots can not recreate. So it just doesn't seem right to even incorporate it in our art processes. Not mention it's bassed off of stolen work anways 💀💀💀
I am that weirdo artist who doesn't like coloring. I usually draw (sometimes) multiple sketches of an idea while thinking about composition and other things, then rough sketch (which I obviously enjoy), then another sketch, and then I don't create a new layer and trace the sketch into a lineart because I just clean it up instead. That part doesn't feel very tedious for me, and the second part of lineart, which is making some lines thicker and some thinner and making the artwork feel "sharper" is something I enjoy as well. So, the most tedious part of drawing for me is flat coloring, and then finishing coloring (except for adding special effects like shine/overlay/sparkles/whatever). However, even I wouldn't want to let AI do that for me, because I am an artist. I have an idea in my head and i'm drawing it, AI can't read my mind and know what feeling is the coloring supposed to convey and other things that I planned and can see clearly in my head before the artwork is done.
This kind of reminds me of the auto-shade function in CSP but the thing with the autoshade function is that it *doesn't* look finished, it's just a first step for you to refine further on your own and finish on your own. It isn't doing the work FOR you and it isn't doing weird shit with your art. Like, I'm a comic artist. I draw comics. I don't put them out weekly, and I never will, but even with all the work it takes to make them I wouldn't use a tool like this just so I *could.*
honestly coloring base colors might be my favorite part of drawing rn it’s pretty chill and it’s very satisfying after i worked so long on the lineart 😂
I agree about the fun part - I love shading, this is where the image truly comes to life. Sure, you could be able to be more productive in terms of raw output, but that would quickly make it feel cold and impersonal. Also, those companies are either staggeringly naive or willfully ignoring that scammers have ALREADY been teaching each other how to save money by canceling commissions after the sketch and feeding that sketch into an AI.
This makes me feel like a saggy potato on an early Saturday. 😔 can't be anything on social media anymore. News are getting sadder and sadder 😔 I always love your art! Please be careful and take care of your creative and art 🫶
I just wanna see if this butchers my coloring and shading style. I'd never use it legit but man I wanna see if it just makes dragons all screwed up because it was only trained on humans or something. Update: it turned my adorable purple and pink dragon gray and yellow somehow, completely screwed up his eye. It did do some block shading well, but it also doesn't consider where light sources come from so it got the light completely wrong in that sense. It also thought his throat pouch was fur.
As a traditional artist tryna learn digital, I really do struggle with lineart, but I would never EVER let some dumb ai "help" me, all that's going to do is make me feel "good" about something I never did and I'd never learn
Even a mangaka would have to go back and fix all the weird stuff the AI spits out, lol. Better to ink and color it yourself and use Glaze or something before posting. I like the idea of putting a random photo next to the image to be posted though. I'll have to keep that in mind.
That’s not an Underpainting. An underpainting is a technique where you create a monochromatic version of the work in order to lay out the values of the piece. Then later you can go back over it and glaze color over this and not have to worry much about shading because you’ve already taken care of it. So for them to say that they only need line art and an underpainting and can generate the shading for you is laughable for so many reasons. An underpainting IS the shading and contains no variation in color. Not only that but it is rarely used by digital artists and is more used as a tool by physical artists who want to conserve expensive pigmented mediums.
Art is a journey. AI bros are in for the money, that's their driving force. It strips the art of its beauty. Meanwhile, artists do art because they love it. Even if they had all the money in the world, so they could retire and do whatever they want all day, they'd STILL choose to make art.
I don't use to make art but I do use it for characters idea like ill ask So to make an character and they will describe the character then ill draw it I don't know but I used it for art block , Idk if it still bad.
I somewhat can understand the appeal a bit but... where's the satisfaction? I genuinely feel great to the point of touching myse--- I mean I am very happy when I finish a drawing and I look on it day after day with a grin. If part of it was done by AI then... I dunno... probably would feel as if I traced everything from someone else. Zero satisfaction. No fun climax. Ok I will stop.
Anime art is not special, but just one in a billion of the training set data points. Even if they use the art for training, the contribution will be so miniscule, not even a single bit will be influenced by it. Even if the user specifically prompts the model to do "yet another bland anime cartoon by mediocre artist." Unless you invented an outstanding personal style, adding new dimensions to the model, and it looks totally different from anything else, your work can't be patented. So yeah, make humanoids with 13 fingers, because that is something that will be breaking models.
i hate colouring so i hope its good for me its not fun, i prefer linearts and sketches, colors can go to AI because its boring AF webtoon and manga artists dont do sketches, pro level ofc i dont do them anymore, only to show clients
So..where is the problem? you know that clip studio paint has already an imbuilt AI that helps you with shading and coloring ? So will you hate on it now? will all peole hate on CSP now and stop using it? No. why are you all such hypocrites? you are no real artists you are toxic. same people who hate on artists using ai , but artists using photobashing is fine? xD I draw 2 colored comic pages per day and i would be GLAD if I had a good way of auto shade or at least auto flat coloring (if you just put dots of the color and it fills cleanly the area for you)

I don't support the AI tool, but to answer the question, lineart is actually my favorite part of the drawing. I don't feel that I dislike any large section of the drawing like sketching or coloring, but probably specific details, and the first part of coloring.
Fellow lineart enjoyer! So many people i know abhor doing lineart its crazy
@@SteelDeity Haha, I didn't know people hated lineart so much, I thought it was just difficult for most people. I guess it depends on the style, and how interesting the lineart is supposed to be.
@@Jyoryaxx yep, the people i know hate lineart cus its difficult for them to do, line weights are so satisfying to draw though
@@SteelDeity I don't hate it but I don't love it and it's for this reason, it's difficult for me because I want clean lineart but have motor function issues. 😂 That said, I wouldn't want a tool to do it FOR me...
@@himbosuplex Real, i understand frfr
Why do we need this? Artists know how to color and all this stuff. The only reason someone would need this is to rush art and use no skill.
"Just draw cuz you love it, y'know, I think that's why you should be doing it, you should always be doing art for the right reasons um and with the best intentions" -Gerard Way
So i dont think a webtoon artist should rely on these to upload more chapters or whatever because then are you doing art cuz you love it or doing art to quickly make manga?
Btw he said this like 12 years ago but it is still true
Plus like any Webtoon artist that is rushing chapters is already relying on 3D models anyway... this tool wouldn't really do anything for that??? So I genuinely can't think of a use case for this except people kneecapping themselves by never learning how to actually PAINT.
@@himbosuplex yeah
I suck at drawing and my favorite part of drawing is still colouring, because I can study it, like colour theory.
Imagine giving a WIP sketch to your client, and then your client uses this $hit, cancels the commission, and voilà, you've made art for free...
How could youtube hide this from me 2 minutes
For me it is 18 minutes
For me 23 minutes 🙄
24 mins ugh 😣
For one, it is 29 mins

Great takes on this topic! Love your perspective on this. I'm a lifelong artist and the way these tech bros have tried to act like the work put into art just doesn't matter is sickening. Like it's their property when it's not.
As an artist that has a severe wrist/joint disability, I really disagree with you. Rendering is by far the most painful process for me and a lot of other people. Anything that's repetitive like that is painful. Lineart/base colors are easiest. I have had to change my style from painterly to flat/pop stuff and I just hate it. I wouldn't use AI but i really see the appeal of this product... :(
Same here. And if one is making thousands of comic panels, Copainter can be very helpful especially if a webcomic artist is in a time crunch.
Taking pictures of my WIPs with my phone camera and uploading that was always a good idea it seems lmao
I'll have to start doing that too. Nice idea!
Time to nightshade absolutely everything and anything we post online
I practically feel like we are at the point we should have watermarks on the canvas as we are working on the art 😮💨
@@cosmicllama6910 if it’s gonna help the push back against ai abuse, yes!
@@cosmicllama6910 a watermark doesn't make a picture into AI proof unfortunately, they can take your watermarked work and use it for machine learning or for this "tool" described in the video. There are special tools that will change your image very slightly (in a way that is almost unnoticeable for the human eye) and make it so AI can't study from it. Nightshade is one of them. (sorry if you already knew that, in that case you can ignore silly me, have a nice day!)
@@astra8372 I meant so that programs can't scrape our work as easily while we are doing it.
There was that controversial thing recently about windows taking screenshots of our desktops periodically and cloud storing the data.
At this point I just don't trust or put anything past tech industries or programs. They will always find ways to take all our data without our permission. AI has been a lie and a grift that is only made possible by mass invasive surveillance and data mining.
I don't like inking or Lineart much. I love colouring more
inking is the same as lineart...
@@MsAnimeFreak777 ah yes, sorry, my bad
i honestly love rendering small things
@@AlisaKrans actually, same. I'm still learning how to paint without Lineart though, so far, I'm failing hahah
I keep reverting back to doing Lineart unintentionally
@@viision127 you could use sketch as one
Underpainting is basically like the value study normally. It’s part of indirect painting, where you draw the values and glaze the color on top.
You're only parroting braindead takes spewed by people with 0 understanding on how image diffusion works lol
AI tools don't end with basic apps like Midjourney where you can barely even tinker with any tools or parameters.
@@Smug-Smirk AI art can do a superior job?? Those generated pictures don't make sense when you actually look at them lmao
@@solarydaysSmug smirk uses AI, of course he’s meat riding it and being happy about artists losing jobs.
I'm sorry that I'm not writing on the topic of the video, but......
Wow, your Kaveh drawing looks amazing 😃
I used to love posting little wips here and there and now I'm thinking if I'm gonna have to put watermarks all over wips. This is just insane.
this app is probably for speeding up comic, manga and webtoon making (i know, they're all the same)... making comics is a deadly task even with passion, so i understand if someone uses it specifically for this type of job.
For digital artist who have learned art for years and then this ai tool taking over. 😢
AI is scary af (I love your videos and drawings!
Honestly some of those disfigured AI drawings give me nightmares 😬😫
I dislike doing sketches but have to sketch for better lineart as I enjoy doing it. As for coloring I have both hate and love sometimes based on mood. I like lighting more than shading..
Ify!! Shading and rendering is like the magical part of drawing and making digital illustrations!! I don't like line art, but my rendering is enough to make up for it lol.
i’m so glad procreate ceo said hell no to any ai incorporation w their app ❤
10:26 I didnt expect a jumpscare being thrown at me this early 💀💀💀
10:21 Oh no. My full metal Alchemist memories are back.
4:17 Now now, lets stay civil about this.
Ahhh but the shading, lighting, and rendering is so tedious and stressful for me bc I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing 😅
i *do* know what im doing and im still constantly looking at reference, never be afraid to look at references!!
For me, lineart and base color is the fun part. Shadowing and rendering is what I don't like.
Great video! Always happy to see more channels talk about this stuff and bring awareness 😄
I don't put them out weekly, and I never will, but even with all the work it takes to make them I wouldn't use a tool like this just so I *could.*
honestly coloring base colors might be my favorite part of drawing rn
it’s pretty chill and it’s very satisfying after i worked so long on the lineart 😂
so glad I got into art before ai was that popular
Same and I like blueberry 🫐
I agree about the fun part - I love shading, this is where the image truly comes to life. Sure, you could be able to be more productive in terms of raw output, but that would quickly make it feel cold and impersonal.
Also, those companies are either staggeringly naive or willfully ignoring that scammers have ALREADY been teaching each other how to save money by canceling commissions after the sketch and feeding that sketch into an AI.
Your Kaveh is gorgeous 🫶🩷 And very babygirl 😚

I just wanna see if this butchers my coloring and shading style. I'd never use it legit but man I wanna see if it just makes dragons all screwed up because it was only trained on humans or something.
Update: it turned my adorable purple and pink dragon gray and yellow somehow, completely screwed up his eye. It did do some block shading well, but it also doesn't consider where light sources come from so it got the light completely wrong in that sense. It also thought his throat pouch was fur.
YIKES! Thanks for letting me know, now I know it's better to do the shading myself!!!

As a traditional artist tryna learn digital, I really do struggle with lineart, but I would never EVER let some dumb ai "help" me, all that's going to do is make me feel "good" about something I never did and I'd never learn
unrelated but the art in this video is sooo good! i think studying off other artists has really helped to make your art a bit more realistic ❤
Just tech companies throwing any ai tool at the wall and hoping it sticks
What artist will support this?
Answer : "artist that don't really like art, but jut happened to survive as an artist"
Even a mangaka would have to go back and fix all the weird stuff the AI spits out, lol. Better to ink and color it yourself and use Glaze or something before posting. I like the idea of putting a random photo next to the image to be posted though. I'll have to keep that in mind.
youre not wrong… rendering is like the only fun part for me
Gets a clip studio add to color easily and the ai colorize thingy

Hm.. maybe instead of using the results from the ai as a finished drawing- you could use it as a reference for the shading and stuff?
It won't be accurate to reality though, because it's AI and AI doesn't actually understand how that stuff works.
@@himbosuplex I know, but thats why it shouldn't be your only reference - if the ai is far off, you can just use it for the colors
That's actually a good idea - for some cases, like background art, possibly.

So..where is the problem? you know that clip studio paint has already an imbuilt AI that helps you with shading and coloring ? So will you hate on it now? will all peole hate on CSP now and stop using it? No. why are you all such hypocrites? you are no real artists you are toxic.
same people who hate on artists using ai , but artists using photobashing is fine? xD I draw 2 colored comic pages per day and i would be GLAD if I had a good way of auto shade or at least auto flat coloring (if you just put dots of the color and it fills cleanly the area for you)
Ai is probably more hated on due to being more likely to take jobs and because it steals other artist’s work without consent
there will be no law on ai art that wont also negatively effect the doings of normal artists since what ai does is modeled after what normal artists do, your cutting off your nose to spit your face

Thank you for the tip, I just hope I won't forget it, because my 5sec memory working overtime.
