Catholic Catholics use WEED? w/ Fr. Peter Mussett

  • Fr. Peter Mussett is BACK! And this week, we’re talking about weed. That’s right, marijuana.
People argue that it’s healthier than alcohol. They even say you can get the same spiritual fulfillment from marijuana without all the organized religion. But there’s really a CRUCIAL distinction at play here... If you want to know what that is, and also how to explain it to people, then you gotta listen to this episode.

I’ve been fighting stage 4 colon cancer since 2019. Pot helps so much with nausea and pain. Way better than any medication I’ve been prescribed. I’m a little disappointed that this hasn’t been touched? I’m also a practicing Catholic.

I agree, the commentary on this video is very one-sided. The healthcare potential of cannabis is not even acknowledged, and the unparalleled incredible social harm of alcohol is shrugged off as no big deal. This is coming from someone who sells alcohol for a living. I’m a Catholic and I smoke pot, and I’m not ashamed. My mother’s final days on this earth when she died of cancer were made a little more tolerable thanks to cannabis. She was able to die with dignity while her body shut down. God bless you, don’t be ashamed for using a gift that God gave us. It’s a plant, it grows. It was not made by the hands of man.
I will pray for your recovery 🙏. I understand what you’re going through because I watched my mom go through it. If cannabis helps you as someone with stage 4 cancer, who but the Lord Himself can tell you that it’s wrong to use it?

My aunt gave me a good analogy when I said but, God made it so? She said he alone made poison ivy but, he doesn't want you to roll around in it. Made sense. I quit shortly after that for a different reason but, that was a long time ago, recently I tried it again and wow I did not feel well at all. Free again. Thanks be to God.

God made spinach but he doesn't want you smoking it. God made water but it doesn't want us inhaling it. Jesus said to drink the wine responsibly.
There are many examples of misuse of what God gave us but don't freak out because insulin has to be injected, rather focus on the word "appropriate".
I assure you God made poison ivy because it has an appropriate purpose and maybe it has nothing to do with our ingestion but it may protect something on the earth that does have something to do with our nourishment. Just because you couldn't hit yourself with a hammer doesn't mean you shouldn't use a hammer. God gave us his medicines to use, just because millions of people are using some wrong doesn't mean we shouldn't use them at all.
      Focus on appropriate.

It did not destroy your life, you are alive, yearning to be peaceful and have fun & be happy, most of the time anyways because trials & tribulations are part of this journey of life we are all on. In fact if anything, the mere reality that you were addicted is a blessing because it’s begun to help you understand and learn how to be happy. It’s a gift to have experienced that addiction for those some odd 20 years! That wretched aspect of your life was a training campground ⛺️ for your character, faith, hope, fears, desires & needs. Be grateful: PERSPECTIVE IS THE CURE FOR SADNESS ❤ Be grateful that you feel it destroyed your life because that means you love yourself & you love life, god, his kingdom & you & that you comprehend you don’t need to be forgiven: you did nothing wrong. It is simply part of your evolving awareness: in your most catastrophic, destructive, destitute & incomprehensible existence, love, who is god, is right there with you, happily. That’s funny. Me too. Own a business, own property, very responsible, good Catholic. But I’m addicted to weed. Been off & on with it for 29 years but been smoking it virtually every day for 11 years. And usually just smoke in the evening to relax & sleep. I recently quit for 32 days, and it made me realize just how much I’m dependent on it for deep sleep. And it also made me realize just how much cannabis clouds my thinking, decreases my energy, and destroys my self confidence etc… even at a “moderate” dose of 1-2 puffs in the evening. I’ve realized I’m happier & more productive without it, but at the same time I love smoking it. It’s extremely difficult to quit. And I hate to admit, but the addiction is very real. The worst part is the way it effects sleep when you quit. Will take a long time to recover from it. I believe cannabis can & should be used for medicine, but I now have mixed feelings about recreational use. I imagine it’s effecting you more negatively than you realize. Maybe try to quit for awhile & do some self reflection & see what happens. I’ll pray for you & all my other pothead brothers & sisters in Christ 🙏🏼

I think that if people that have negative feelings, Anxiety, depression , should not smoke weed, or should not smoke it on a regular basis. If you are happy and have short term goals and long term goals and love in your live, and that you love your life and your spirit. We have receptors that can handle a "LITTLE BIT" of THC, but our minds and soul have to be healthy and pure too.

What's safe for one could be unsafe for another. Marijuana metabolizes different from person to person. It also metabolizes differently depending on the methods used to consume as well . Edibles can be super intense for some, downright scary. This same plant when smoked by that person will have a completely different effect. There's a lot of myths about this plant. The only way to truly understand it in my opinion would be growing a plant or 2 even if you're unsuccessful the knowledge you learn about the plant is is a great foundation. Plus if you're successful the experience is amazing the fruits of your labor are now thanking you for taking care of it by helping take care of you medicinally -end rant 🙃

It got me in a lot of shady situations. It impaired my intellectual and social aspirations. I felt it wasnt harmful. Being 6 months clean I see clearly how it's so negatively impacted a lot of aspects of my life and I almost treated it as an idol. I Knew it was also fracturing my relationship with Christ.

The weed distributed now is so much stronger now than back in the day. Mostly, my experience with weed only made things funny and increased my appetite for ice cream. The problem is you're borrowing tomorrow's happiness and the longer you do that, the deeper hole you'll have to climb out of one day. And sometimes that hole is so deep, you feel like you can't get out. In addition, THC users generally end up becoming very reclusive. You can't get them out of their house, they lose touch with friends...all while they are digging their hole. Alcohol can do the same, but in moderation people who use alcohol are generally very social and in touch with reality. Getting hammered every night- yes, that's an issue. But society isn't afraid to call that what it is- an issue. THC, it's just my "medicine". Can you imagine someone calling booze their "medicine" and not be joking?

Like others, I used weed when I was young. A practice I picked up in a Catholic High School. Then stopped for many years, about 40 years without. I have had three heart attacks and have recently begun using it again. My heart doctor recommended trying it. I was taking slow-release nitro every 12 hours and also had to carry sublingual nitro in my pocket at all times... using it two or three times a day for chest pain. When I smoke a couple joints per day I do not need any nitroglycerin. My slow-release nitro has been canceled and I do have one bottle of sublingual around but I rarely carry it. If I smoke weed I do not need nitroglycerin. So I could take nitro but still have incidents of chest pain (angina) whenever you experience chest pain its a sign the heart isn't getting enough oxygen, it can do damage to the heart muscle. With marijuana use I have almost zero incidence of angina. I will admit pot does cause some forgetfulness and causes brain fog a little bit. It has is side effects like any drug. If you don't use it or don't need it for a medical purpose I would avoid using it on a regular basis. For me its a personal choice which drug to use for angina, for now I am using weed because I don't want to risk heart attack or heart muscle damage that was a concern when using nitroglycerin.

I am a strong practicing Catholic convert of 4 years now who had reached such beautiful heights of contemplation through constant prayer & talking to God daily, but when I get back into one of my cycles of this addiction, I lose it all & "other" spiritual experiences take it's place. I live in NYC, and I preface this for a reason and I’ll get to it, but first off, yes there is some health benefits to using CBD. However living in the city with the legalization of weed everything has pretty much turned awful. Every area of the city smells like marijuana and everyone is high. I get the CBD effects but that’s not what people are using weed for, they are using Marijuana as an escape from reality. There is more drug users now in the city then it ever was. Every heroin user started FIRST with Marijuana. Many people use other drugs regularly now since Marijuana has been legalized. Marijuana is the modern “soma” drug written in Brave New World.
There was a reason why the marijuana now is dramatically stronger then it once was. Peoples tolerance has increased, just like any other drug I might add….what drugs going to be legalized next and further destroy the social fabric of my city? Oh yeah MAGIC MUSHROOMS!

If you will do a deep dive into these issues, please, stop the equivalency of the recreational marijuana 'use' and alleged 'addiction'.
You're right ALL drugs have a spiritual component, however, the way you are describing cannabis here, and the uninformed linkage to criminality, is not only unjustified, but it's also injudicious.

I have a real hard time with getting good sleep and that was why I started to use it. I only use it in the times where I really can’t sleep. I don’t care for the being “high” experience but that is a consequence of the substance. That being said…is even moderate use of this drug for the use of sleep considered mortally sinful? Cause if that’s the case then I’ll just go back to not sleeping. I’ve asked many priests and I don’t really get a straight yes or no answer. In this video they spoke about the negative side effects and why some people abuse it…but they never told us the churches teaching on it? Unless I missed something?

You’re fine. Cannabis has been in common usage through the world for a long time while the church was around, it’s only been looked upon negatively the last 100 years or so. In the Bible there is a recipe for holy anointing oil that contains cannabis. There is speculation that this was used by the priest class during rituals to help them get closer to God. There is evidence for cannabis burning in many ancient temples in Israel. The issue is modern politics and attitudes towards it

    • @yoeyyoey8937
      @yoeyyoey8937 ปีที่แล้ว

@איתן ברוך we know for a fact the ancient Israelites were using those temples for religious purposes.

@איתן ברוך why are you asking a random guy on the internet for proof that you’re just going to dismiss anyways? All the major archeologists and historians in Israel agree that this was an ancient Israelite worship site. Go argue with them about it. Or at least read their research first. All the cultures around Palestine/Judea up until and after the time of Jesus were using cannabis, and nobody every wrote down anything telling people not to use it. And in fact there’s references to it in the Talmud and the Torah has a recipe for holy anointing oil that contains a ton of cannabis. All the issues you have with cannabis are modern inventions of the last 100 years or so, at every other point in history, cannabis use was normal for medical and spiritual reasons (as well as food and fibers)

The church allows us to use medications to try and relieve our sufferings. Being unable to sleep well is a suffering. The church allows you to relieve your pain when it's possible. Unfortunately, I have to take many drugs to be able to relieve my sufferings only partially. I've taken Ambien for years to help me sleep through the pain. It's not wrong for you to use cannabis in the same way. I do wish that they had addressed medical use more thoroughly in this video. God bless your sleep 🙏🏼

The argument against it is that compared to alcohol, which can be used socially without getting wasted, the sole purpose of marijuana is to get wasted. But that is not really the case anymore. Where it is legal you can get marijuana in different dose levels from very mild to very strong. You can buy a low dose gummy that would give the same high as a few beers or couple glasses of wine. You do not have to get wasted.

    Principles:
Don’t abuse substances, err on the side if fasting instead of gluttony.
Refrain from consuming anything intoxicating for at least 4 hours before participating in sacraments.
If you are responsibly partaking, aim for relief and delight, not drunkenness and wanton abandonment of responsibility.
Don’t let your consumption be a source of scandal to others, especially the youth.
Know your mental health and family history.
Never be greedy, or clingy, or shut yourself off…if substances are making you this way, cut back on the substances.

We all became addicts. I've read Aquinas and Aristoteles while high, maybe is just me, but I see it as a tool that enhances sensitivity, this way is easier to contemplate things and explore on metaphysics, it has "helped" me to understand on some degree about act and potency, and other metaphysical principles, also it lead me to believe again from atheism back to catholicism, even thou I'm not a good catholic right now, I know that catolicism seeks truth, using the thomist definition of truth. So maybe is just myself but I think it can lead to catholicism if people is guided in a proper way while using it, or if not all the catholicism at leat to ask ouserlves about what are these universal concepts, truth, goodness, beauty, and unity, but needs to be guided with good metaphysics, like Thomism

In your analogy coffee would be marijuana and booze is heroin. Even booze in moderation is far worse than consuming marijuana everyday. Just look at a thirty year old like me that has smoked weed for decades and compare me to someone that has been moderately drinking for the same amount of time, just weekends. You can see that the booze has aged them drastically.

Ok I'm not a practicing catholic not since I was in middle school. What I'm trying to understand is where this "promise" is offered. If you're in a state that's legalized it why is it being demonized as if all these operations are not sanctioned.? I don't see an alcohol video like this. Or a COFFEE video! People are out here out of their minds w/and with out it. Why do we need wine? What does wine solve what is it helping ? Alcohol and weed both were legal then illegal at once. More people die from alcohol and tobacco than anything else
I do smoke with the intention of stress relief just like one glass of wine. You guys even used the alcohol improving the taste of argument then made fun of a weed smoker enjoying food. I appreciate the message and intention in the video i honestly love the vibes. That said....you guys gotta be care of how you present the information. The title and content all come across as a Reefer Madness reboot basically. If you would have changed the title to "How do Catholics avoid the pitfalls of addiction? Then the subject tagline is"this week week we explore marijuana" collectively we need to be mindful of how we pack up and present info. Miscommunication w/o clear intent can be very harmful.

I've been looking up the research by Catholic universities on marijuana. Still looking.....No studies done with different age groups, different religious backgrounds, no comparative studies like 100 Catholics in a state of grace vs 100 secularist, no comparison by social and financial class. You guys are talking out of your asses on this one. It's alright to feel ecstasy ask St.Teresa of Avila. I don't think marijuana can compare to the transverberation St. Teresa felt, nor does it compare to Our Lord in the most holy blessed Sacrament. I smoke marijuana every day like it's going out of style. I try to keep up with God the Father on His Holy Mountain. God the Father and God the Holy Spirit are heavy smokers so watch your mouth😆 That's all over scripture so stop it. Gloria tibi Domine

Chris is misusing the term 'synthetic.' How is an herb that grows from the ground synthetic? In fact it is the opposite. Now when you go down the path of derivatives/distillations, etc. of weed, yes, it might make sense to use that term. Just like hard alcohol is another thing altogether from beer/wine. Flower buds of plants dried and smoked/vaped/consumed are simply not synthetic but natural. Do either have firsthand experience? No. It's like listening to a DARE officer describe weed.

As a sober alcoholic I am saying this without judgement. If it is legal and regulated it can appear to take some of the moral question away. If you are growing it for yourself, or source it to someone you know is gardening, same. If not, there are absolute horrors that are involved in mass production and distribution. Try researching cartels. It may help to hear about the slavery, murders, oppression that go into it.
Then i would ask you to look closely at the niche of culture that has been promoting it for recreation for decades, what other acts do they promote? If we're honest with ourselves is it not demonic influence?
Medical marijuana in extreme cases gets a pass from me, when it can be sourced. Beyond that it's time to ask yourself if it's something you want to support by consuming.
Walk through a neighborhood where half the community is dependent on drug money. Look at the evils and suffering that arise out of it. Discard the idea that the suffering only occurs when harder drugs are in circulation. Like anything evil it starts small and is easily rationalized. When we begin to rationalize we turn over the wheel to the wrong hands. I used to laugh at the term "gateway drug" but then i took a step back and expanded my view.

Whether or not marijuana, is appropriate for someone to use depends entirely upon their individual situation. It also depends on how they use it. Marijuana can be used in moderation without any negative effects on health or lifestyle. There are many medical conditions, that can be treated using marijuana. Having said that, you don’t need to be sick in order to enjoy marijuana. There will be people in the community, who strongly believe that using marijuana is sinful, or detrimental to our relationship with Almighty God. There will also likely be some members of the community who strongly believe marijuana to be a “gateway drug” and that those who use it will end up dependent on much harder drugs like cocaine, heroin, LSD, or methamphetamine. People who have used marijuana responsibly, are well aware that using it is similar to having a glass of wine. Let’s not demonise, this wonderful herb that God Almighty created and scattered around the Earth for us to benefit from, and enjoy.

I've been suffering from chronic pain for years and have even asked EWTN what is okay. They said the same thing. So if weed allows you to sleep better or feel better, it's not wrong, as long as it's used responsibly. Simply getting high is not responsible!
