Maybe it's my imagination but from my experience, the Dominicans have the best senses of humor. They really reflect the joy of the Lord.

So relieved to hear it's not a drug! Like most Italians I was introduced to coffee from a very early age in the form of 'cafe & latte' which is a typical Italian breakfast. By the time I was a young adult I was well and truly addicted to the stuff. I think limiting our coffee intake to one a day during Lent is sage advice.

Me too! Only an American tainted by Protestant ethic (and that's just about everyone in some way) would ask this question. Coffee a drug? What are we, Mormons?

Grateful for this topic because I’ve struggled with this question. And Fr. Gregory, your dry wit has me in stitches. 😂 Thank you!

Interesting title. Objectively, coffee contains caffeine, which is a drug. Does the title mean to delve into the associations linked to "drugs"? When people say they cannot function until they have coffee, that sounds like a reliance on "drugs." When used to aid social gathering, it does not. When used to relieve a headache, caffeine may be pharmaceutical.

Alcohol is also used to aid social gathering. Does that make it not a drug? Pharmaceuticals are also literally drugs, hence the name "drugstore".
So yes, people who say these things are talking about the associations mostly. And those associations are often something like "Drugs are bad, mkay". Which is a very uneducated take, the reality is much more complex and nuanced than that.

Of course it is, you take it to have an effect on your mood/energy/state.

Yes. But, if it gets me through my slavish, robotnik existence, I am okay with that.

Are you guys kidding me? What about the San Damiano cross? Jesus is fully alive speaking to Saint Francis on the cross.

Fr. Pine, what do you think St. Thomas would say about Vatican 2 saying we are somehow related to pagans and Muslims and Protestant heretics?

Fathers, how can you reconcile the Church before and after Vatican 2?

    Beard….no

I think nice beards like Fr. Gregory's are fine...on priests. My late husband had a well trimmed one and I really didn't like being married to a beard.

Fathers, the Pope is dragging the Church into the abyss and you're talking about coffee!

The conversation isn't about coffee. It's about moral choices, healthy and unhealthy. It's a metaphore.
