The duel between Inigo and Wesley is one of the most technically perfect fencing scenes on film. I fenced in high school and college and we used to nerd out over that fight 😂
My favorite will always be the first fight in The Three Musketeers from 1948 with Gene Kelly. This one is a close second though ;-)
I forget which one it is, but there's a musketeers film which was the first to include wires with swordfight choreography, late '90's or early aughts, I believe. A few of the fights look pretty cheesey in retrospect, they didn't know the limits of wires, so you get a lot of, Crouching Tiger, unbelievability. But the others are pretty seamless. And better, the fencing follows plotwise, I mean, the action isn't just fighting, but has motivations and clearly follows character. That's a tough trick, to act/fight and still make it look true to the moment.
Joined the fencing club at college, and later became an instructor for the club. Every year, after the activities fair, the first question I'd ask all the new crop who turned up to the club, "How many of you are here because of the Princess Bride?" ... and there'd always be lots of hands... including mine. ;)

Mandy Patinkin, who plays Inigo Montoya, lost his father to Cancer before this movie was filmed. And when shooting the scene in which he fights Count Rugen, he was imagining that Count Rugen was cancer, and that's how he was able to act it so well.
You read the book Cary wrote too huh? It’s such a sweet look back at the fun they had making it.

I married my husband almost exactly 3 years ago. Our anniversary is later this month. And we both love this movie so much that we did our first dance to "Storybook Love" (the theme song for this movie) and our rings, as well as our cake topper, all say "As You Wish." Because we're huge nerds

Hannah is completely correct. That "glare" (known as lens flare in the industry) is something that always enhances a shot, and they will often plan for it specifically by shooting with the right lens at the right time of day to catch the sun just where it will create it, or create it on purpose by putting a light in a certain place, or even create it with computers, both in movies and in still photography. Good call Hannah! Also, this is one my top ten favorite films of all time and I love watching people react to it for the first time.
True. of course it can get out of hand like in JJ Abram's first Star Trek movie, which I've always subtitled "Attack of the Lens Flares".
When Count Rugen hits Westley with the hilt of his sword, he actually knocked Cary Elwes out for real and he had to go to the hospital, not for the first time while filming that movie (he also broke his toe when it got run over by Andre the Giant's ATV), and he got treated by the same doctor both times, and was in costume both times. So the doctor looked at him and said "you're pretty clumsy, aren't you Zorro?" The take where he was knocked out by the sword hilt is the one they ended up using in the movie
As a martial arts instructor, there is so much that actually was happening in that swordfight. In the start, when they weren't moving much, those were testing strikes, they can tell you more about your enemy than nearly anything else can.
Bonetti, Capoferro, Thibault and Agrippa were all expert fencers, whose recorded styles were recreated for the film.
As a not martial artist, is the idea to test your opponent (mentally?)while also not leaving yourself as open as a real strike would?
@@zeallust8542 exactly! It also allows for you to see your opponents natural reactions which allows for you to know better that IF your attack is blocked, how you can follow that up. By testing, you see how their guard moves, and how they react to an attack.
If they see it as a test (even moreso if they respond with their own test) then you can know that you are dealing with a skilled opponent
@@yqq to be fair, Rocko Bonetti was mostly known for dying and didn't really leave much impact on the world of fencing. Bonettis Defense in the movie is actually a pun since they were on rocky terrain (ROCKo Bonetti)

So there is a reason Lord Farquaad from Shrek looks like Prince Humperdink, that's because they actually modeled Farquaad after Humperdink, good eye mate. Couple of other tid bits, Miracle Max is played by legendary comedian Billy Crystal, and the actor playing the grandfather is Peter Falk who is best known for playing the iconic detective Columbo. This entire movie is homage/tribute to the swashbuckling adventure movies of Hollywood's golden age back when stars like Errol Flynn reigned. A few other iconic action adventure movies to check out that I know you'll both love Willow, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Goonies.

This is satire. William Goldman used all the fairy tale stereotypes and turned them upside down. BRILLIANT writing!
Those 2 actors trained with a world reknowned fencing expert for months on the real fencing moves and choreography you dismissed as nothing, dude. The rest of the movie is fair game because it unapologetically shows you what it is, but do not diss the fencing.
It's not the most accurate dual in cinema but it's probably the most entertaining
Yeah, it's pure Errol Flynn. Which is perhaps not a surprise, since Bob Anderson's first movie job was coaching and fight arranaging for Flynn in The Master of Ballantrae.

I love how Inigo _actually_ gets his revenge. Most stories end up going “There’s nothing I can do to bring my father back, so there’s no point in killing you”, but Inigo instead goes “There’s nothing you can do to bring my father back, so there’s _nothing_ that can save you.” and it feels much more rewarding. Especially how he becomes the next dread pirate Roberts at the end, so he’s not left without purpose
Trashing the sword fight ended it for me. It's one of the best fight scenes in cinematic history.

Yeah, I was watching a reaction to Airplane last night and the reactor completely talked over the "I take it black, like my men" joke missing it entirely and I was done.

That's sweet. While I have always enjoyed the compassion and warmth with which the line was delivered, I hadn't considered the fact that it is definitionally linked to another phase. Thank you for sharing!
This is one of the few movies I consider to be perfect. It is exactly what it presents itself to be a children's story being read to a child. The lack of gore anf complication is how a child sees things. There was a comic writer Stephan Leacock who explained that children see things differently than adults. In a sea battle when a cannon sweeps a deck there is no blood, those swept off the deck are pushed into the water. This movie is perfect
Robin Wright Penn who plays Buttercup stated that Andre The Giant used his extremely large hands keep her warm during filming in cold days. He cupped her head with those hands. Robin loved Andre. She stated that he very caring about her. At 1st, Robin was very scared of Andre. Robin calls him the gentle giant. Sadly, Andre died at 46 of congestive heart failure in his sleep in 1993.

A Greek/Macedonian Prince, was so afraid to die of poissoning( wich was Realitvely common back then), that at a young age he started to drink small amounts of poison, so that his body would build either a resistance or immunity to it over time.
Some 10-15 years later, the prince is captured by his enemies after been defeated in battle.
The enemies wanted to torture him/ransom him (i don't rememner wich it was) and since he din't want to suffer the humiliation of this, he tried to drink Poison to end his life...
Wich din't work, cause , well his body DID build an immunity to poison over the years.
It's still done right now. Alcohol is poison and people can build up incredible tolerance to it.

@Jamie Pritchard Those lines were amazing and iconic to me instantly. Even if no one else liked this movie, I would still think so. He didn't even give an example for something better. Just my opinion.
@Jamie_Pritchard You are exactly right. The first time you watch this movie, you likely won't have his name perfectly memorized by the first time he says the line, and "You killed my father, prepare to die" wouldn't be a particularly memorable line if that was the only time he said it. We all love it, because it is foreshadowing to arguably the most memorable scene in the movie.
All of the people who are being obnoxious about the way Ash responded, remind me of the "I liked it before it was cool" kids. They were probably little twerps when they saw it the first time, but want everyone to know that they were fans from day one!

The actor was talking about his father that had just been lost to cancer...I could feel his anger asking for his father back. Great reaction. Edit: Mentioned below that his father had passed more than a decade earlier. Still could see in his face the feeling.
My father had past away just 2 yrs prior in 1985 when I was eleven years old. Inigo became my favorite instantly
His father died in 1973. This movie was made in 1987. He may have drawn some emotional inspiration from that but the idea that it had just happened and that his current real life grief was bleeding through into the film is simply myth.

Excuse me, but Inigo's line to his father's killer is the perfect thing for him to say. It's iconic. Obviously you have no clue as to how much effort goes into a sword fight, they worked hard on it.
He didn't know any better yet, he got it by the end! I get it, people are ridiculously protective of this movie. I've seen it about 50 times it myself. No reason to get snarky.

He has his opinion and I have mine, this is my favorite movie and many others as well. So if people pick at it, it will bother me. And I would say he was snarky himself about the dual.
Wesley is the dude trapped in the first Saw and Buttercup is Jenny from Forest Gump in their younger years.
If you don’t love this movie you don’t understand or appreciate a timeless classic.

this movie is great because it's a movie you watch when you are 10, and again when you're 20, and again when you're 30, and it's a completely different movie each time.
19:35 During their capture, when the six-fingered man knocked out Wesley, that was real. The actor hit him too hard with the hilt of the sword and he woke up in the hospital. They were doing several takes and Cary Elwes (Wesley) told him to hit him harder to make it look real. It worked.
Yup! He had a concussion from that hit!
FYI the actor playing the story-telling Grandpa, Peter Falk, was 60 years old when this film was made. Old enough for a convincing grandpa? 😉

So, give this movie a break, it's from the 80s and it's primarily for kids. Whenever people say this is their favorite movie, they mean that it was their favorite as a kid. An interesting bit of trivia about this film, supposedly the writer was going to write a story for his young daughters and when he asked them what they wanted it to be about one said "A Princess" and the other said "A Bride!"
Mandy Patinkin...one of my favorites ever. He is amazing in the series "Dead Like Me" as well.

The same story, that killed me. When you have kids you will learn that they watch, listen to the same things thousands of times. I use to make up stories to tell my son and when I couldn't remember exactly what I had said He did. Kids will call you on all your BS so just learn to love to tell the same story over and over. He is now 24 and he has made me so happy by telling me he loved my silly made up stories better than anything else. I can still tell it but if I try to write it down it's just not the same. I have to almost act it out and it's a long long story. This movie is just great story! Yes, we watched it many times also.

The sword fight between Wesley and Inigo is my all-time favorite sword fight scene.
I started laughing at 20 minutes in and laughed almost non stop for the next 2 minutes, you two are eejits 😂😂😂❤❤❤
Peter Falk (Columbo) played the grandfather. Inigo Montoya was played by Mandy Patinkin. Prince Humperdink was played by Chris Sarandon, and Count Rugen (the 6-fingered man) was played by Christopher Guest (notice that he's always wearing goves, for obvious reasons).
Miracle Max was played by Billy Crystal (with a LOT of makeup) and his wife Valerie (who also needed a lot of makeup) was played by Carol Kane.
Cary Elwes played Westley and Robin Wright played Buttercup. All of the sword work was done by the actual actors, no stunt men, though they did get someone else for the high bar gymnastics in the big sword fight between Inigo Montoya and the man in black.
Andre the Giant died not too long after this movie was made. This movie is indeed the best romance movie ever. I read the book, which is fantastic (and the author wrote the screenplay for this), and a few weeks later I was in a movie theater and saw a preview for this! I was SO excited, and while they left a fair bit out from the book, the movies doesn't lack at all, because of it. In my **mumbles** years on this Earth, I have met maybe TWO people who didn't like this movie, and they were the "I only read/watch non-fiction" snobby sorts. I felt bad for them, really. How limiting that must be. Someone who can't enjoy their imagination breaks my heart. Oh, and when I was in a group of students in college who went to England, I got to meet Malcolm Storry, the guy who plays the Captain of The Guards in this. "Oh, you mean this gate key!" I have a picture of him kissing my cheek.
The innocence and purity of a fairytale and classics sarcastic comedy. That's what makes this film so fun to watch. You don't take it seriously because it's a fairy tail. But you go back over and over again because you connect with a character so much that you just fall in love with a story. It's kind of the same how you two are so loved by your followers. Sometimes we ask "what am I watching?" But then it comes back around watching you guys's final reactions to the movies we've loved with awe and enthusiasm as much as we did. It is truly fun to watch. Keep It coming guys

I've never heard someone hear Inigo's signature line and react by saying, "Meh. It could have been better." The actor, Mandy Patinkin, constantly hears fans repeat this line to him. This line is given back to him more than any other line from his other movies. I daresay no line is repeated to an actor more than ,"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.". Ask any fan of the movie to repeat a line from the movie and 9 times out of 10 this will be the line given.

The kid is Fred Savage who stared in a TV show called "The Wonder Years". Grandpa is Peter Falk who stared in "Colombo" a detective show. Remember "As you wish" really means "I love you" so when Grandpa replies as such, he is really telling his grandson that he loves him. Why do you keep saying "Inconvincible"? It is inconceivable that you can't remember the word said

Are you kidding me? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles…
12:49 nah this fight scene is actually pretty good. They're using rapiers or atleast, a kind of short rapier. It's not a cutting weapon really, it's all about thrusting. It's actually arguably the best sword in unarmored combat ever made, the reason being is it's incredibly fast. The way that it's balanced you can have your point centered on the opponents face, and then with a slight wrist movement you're pointing to his ankles. So those circular motions they keep doing is to keep the point off of them. They're defending against a thrust while at the same time trying to gain an opening for their own thrust. You can potentially thrust with a one handed sword much faster than you can dodge, even with a fairly heavy sword like a rapier.
So the circular parries they're doing is good, the wide swipes they do are more for dramatic effect. It's definitely not a perfect scene, but it looks far more realistic than the majority of sword fighting scenes in films and tv.
Andre was already having bad back problems when this picture was made. He was a mountain of a man that was as gentle and kind as he was big. One of the rings he wore was large enough to pass a silver dollar through the opening. Robin Wright said during shooting she experienced cold weather and rain. Andre could cover her head with his hand and help keep her warm while on set. And the entire movie is a fairy tale. Silly and preposterous but a lot of fun. I love the ending, it feels like the whole story has been told so the grandfather can say "As you wish" to his grandson. Very sweet. Peace!
He does not look the guy from "Shrek". The guy from "Shrek" looks like Prince Humperdinck and that was intentional. 🙂

Not gonna lie your face after “I’ve just sucked one year of your life away”, and then the home alone clip, was one of the better things I’ve seen on YT. Literally laughed out loud.
Fun Fact: When the six figured man knocked out Wesley outside of the swamp, in that seen had been rehearsed a few times but they couldn't get the timing right, so the actor playing wesley said "Its ok go ahead and actually hit me once I can take it" So the other actor really hit him, and promptly gave him a concussion really knocking the actor unconscious. He was taken to the ER after that. That was the take they used in the movie, so you actually saw the actor getting knocked unconscious. Oh and the guy playing the big rat, got drunk and arrested and had to explain why he needed to get out was he was playing that rat in a movie.
This might be the most deeply satisfying movie ever.

The point of this movie is all the great lines. It's written so well. You too were giggling ridiculously so much through the whole thing you couldn't really appreciate the amazing dialog. Yes, it's silly and obviously done on a very small budget so it looks really small scale, but the banter is fantastic. That's why people love it.

It's one of my two favorite movies: don't ask me to choose between this and Blues Brothers. I can't and I won't. They're for two different moods, though. And the older I get, the more the final bit with the grandfather saying, "As you wish" ... the more it just gets me and is the absolute perfect ending to this perfect movie. Truly something for everyone in this film.
Just remember folks that this is a FAIRY TALE. Nothing has to be true-to-life, like Fezzik carrying 5 people up the rope at the Cliffs of Insanity. Might want to avoid the MJ before your next reaction vid.

I am always baffled as to how people don't immediately recognize Cary Elwes as both Farm Boy and Pirate. He has one of the most recognizable faces and voices in Hollywood. It's a Superman's glasses level of costume change.
