Great review. Probably worth mentioning the old Hogwarts and Chamber sets were $90 & $70 respectively. That $160 is now $250 after inflation. So the new Chamber set costs about half at $120.
The current Chamber ($120), Polyjuice Potion Mistake ($20), Hospital Wing ($50)and rumored new Sirius’ Rescue ($50) would be a dollar for dollar comparison.
The whole inflation argument breaks apart when you consider that LEGO is pretty much a closed market and it is LEGO themselves who dictate the prices for their sets. It is even crazier if you think about how an artificial price increase today can be used to make the older sets look bad on purpose. For example, LEGO could today just arbitrarily charge 1000$ for a tiny little Hogwarts set and people would say: "Well the Hogwarts from 2001 would be 10,000$" in todays money so 1000$ for this small Hogwarts set is appropriate.
@@OCPyrit lego operates using global currencies they have no control over the buying power of, so inflation absolutely applies. If Lego charged 10000 for a set today that wouldn’t mean older sets re 10000 in todays money, they’d be priced by global inflation rates just the same. The fact is the money Lego asked for back then was worth twice as much as it is now, it’s very simple.
I have them both (incomplete) from my childhood super cool. And indeed Greathest memory's. It was my 1st lego set from Sinterklaas (dutch hollyday, its kind of like christmass)
If you are going to combine sets for the 2001 sets then you should also combine the 2021 Chamber of secrets with the poly juice potion set. The poly juice potion set provides the entrance to the chamber of secrets. This would give the 2021 chamber the height you found lacking in your comparison. P.S. You guys were my favorite team on Brick Masters.
I love these comparisons! I find that while I love all of the new specialized parts, I also love the nostalgic charm of the old sets. Not just Harry Potter sets, but all lego in general. Loved you guys on LEGO Masters, keep making these great videos. I love detailed breakdowns of LEGO sets. Thanks for sharing!
Your intro is great. Happy to see another Harry Potter fanatic around. I didn't get either of these sets because the Hogwart's Castle has a really nice Chamber of Secrets.
I personally love the 2001, 2002 sets better because of that nostalgia. I also love the 2002 chamber better because you can at least set it up in the form of the chamber like it is in the movie.
Nice review! Echoing some others, I miss the old, more spartan LEGO aesthetic. It might be the nostalgia speaking though. I only ever had the Lupin’s classroom set and possibly the Flying Lesson. I remember the new flesh-colored minifigs feeling very cool, though it was probably blasphemy to older LEGO fans of the day :D
I share your puzzlement about Lego's recent outright obsession over poop and also toilets. Every set that has unused space left over is filled with a toilet or excrement. For a company so concerned about avoiding sex, nudity and violence, they sure do compensate a lot with voyeurism and fecal humour
These are so informative and fun to watch. I can't wait to see more about the Harry Potter line and other old themes that meant a lot to you. Also, bionicle review?
Fun fact, the Chamber of secret set is the reason we got Internet in my house back in 2002, didn’t have one before and we went to visit my aunt and they had it, and I spent all weekend on the lego website looking at the Harry Potter sets and when we gt home my parents connected us. 2 months later I bought the set Going to build it now!
I had the old old great hall growing up, but never the old chamber of secrets. I always wanted it. Finally got this new version to scratch that itch and I'm loving it.
Hey Cheesey the umm the dog belongings behind the banners of the great hall 2022 set is so that the sorting hat can be placed there it's like a stand.. as for the frogs.. you pretty much nailed it on that one lol
I do believe in 2001 Legos philosophy that bigger is better for Hogwarts atleast, because it brings out the umph and the feeling of the castle....but I do like the touch ups on the new set as well it was like they where paying homage to the original, by keeping an original look with a sleeker updated style..... thoroughly enjoyed your review....thank you for this.
I actually reconfigured my 2021 set to accommodate the bathroom set above the slide into the Chamber where it would be in the book and movie 😊❤ I undeniably LOVE Harry Potter and also Lego 😊
Awesome review! The older sets were better as they did not have as many of the newer specialty pieces, which required greater creativity and imagination. The Great Hall of the 2001 set gives you space to build out the tables. The new sets have better mini figures, but the older sets have more space for imagination.
Good points. New pieces are awesome for sure, but some definitely have an almost unLEGO-like quality to them - they're just too specialized. The older model just feels more like LEGO.
WHOA! you seem like such a historian in this vid that i googled how old you were. no wiki page yet, but there was an article about you and Jacob winning a harry potter build off in 2011! how serendipitous!
I can't believe you ran across that! That's awesome. That was certainly our claim to LEGO fame before LEGO Masters. LEGO Harry Potter is my life to say the least!
loved the review but i think you should position the camera a little closer or at least get more close up shots of the builds in the future. a lot harder to notice the details youre talking about from a wide shot of your room
Great review. Althought one thing is tricky about 2001 line. It was based more on books because LEGO never got the proper access. For example: Fluffy is diffrent, Peeves is not in the movie and Ron's hair is just a bowlcut, cause ya know - he's poor fella. Maybe you can do a video containg all the diffrences?
I always forget about the early 2000s sets provided cause i grew up with the late 2000s - early 2010s sets, the original sets had a certain charm to them but the newer sets are far better over all
My main takeaway is that the 2001 sets were much bigger but feel much emptier than the 2021 sets. I think I prefer the 2021 sets, but I can certainly see the advantage of having more play space.
Great video! Love the comparison! Great comments too! But I have the solution, get both 'em ! ! ! ...If you love Harry Potter and you love Legos as much as I do you will fine a way to get the money for both. I have over 300 Harry Potter minifigures collected over the years and I love them all. There are pluses and minuses around all of them. They are FUN! Enjoy and live the dream! ... Thanks, George
Honestly, it's kind of a toss-up for me. If both of these were available on store shelves today at similar price-per-weights, I'd have to go with the 2001 sets. They are just larger and more playable.
New basilisk is so much better........hoooowever...with the old one, you could reenact the eye gouging very effectively. Not that ten year old me would have been so brutal or anything. Nope.. I love snakes. Even petrifying ones.
I'm sort of mixed, the newer kits are more "put together" and detailed, while the older ones are grander and just feel more .. "Lego" like while i've never been able to witness the nostalgia of the older sets, (as I wasn't born yet lol) ... I can still see the appeal in them
@@CheeseyStudios Oh yes definitely, they did a good job combining both styles for the Hogwarts Castle from the looks of it. I'm also again, surprised with the amount of figures included

Good point! That certainly helps explain that crazy size difference!
Legos prices always shock me. I mean 120$?! If I didn't know the price I would price this set at 60$, maybe 80$ if I wanted to be greedy.

I wonder if the poops are a reference to JKR saying that wizards didn't used to have toilets, they'd just go on the floor and teleport it elsewhere.

succumbing to nostalgia is betraying yourself
"Love better"
If you could only get how ridiculous that sounds in my language.
There's something to be said about older sets, they feel more for children while some of the older sets go for a more mature audience

Those first few waves of Harry Potter were so great for their time. Still love them...
@@CheeseyStudios and another old video that just pops up for me

Glad you enjoyed this! They're definitely both great in their own right, but the original 2001/2002 models' scale is insanely impressive.
The ghost in the original 2001 set is actually a poltergeist, Peeves.

I’m sorry, I know the new basilisk is way more accurate, but I much prefer the older one. It’s so charming

Whoa I knew you looked familiar
Even without the nostalgia, the 2001/2002 stood its ground against the newer versions with the crude LEGO feeling and being less cartoonish
Agreed. It's a very timeless style in my opinion.
The poop is from fluffy the 3 headed dog in the other Harry Potter 2021 set
Surprisingly the ghost is actually peeves believe it or not they actually made something that’s from the books!
Yeah! I love that he still managed to make it into the sets.

lol I forgot about that 🤣
Ok I gotta ask. Whats the story with the poops?
I just can't work out these sets, since when was Howarts built out of sandstone with green roofs? 🤔
It's my understanding that the original sets were made without seeing the actual movie, going off concept art instead
I feel like there’s a balance between size and detail between these 2 sets.

Yep! There was a standalone Great Hall released in 2018.
Very late reply, But i assume the poop is because the chamber is connected via the toilets!
That does make sense, ha!
2001 Chamber of secrets wins for me for the sole reason that the Slytherin's head is brickbuilt. I really dislike the simplicity of the 2021
