From a 67 year old drummer who started with Ringo and Morello I can say that your skills are exceptional across the spectrum.. But what you also have is that 'it' thing when it comes to teaching.. that magic ability of making the seeming abstract understandable and transferable.. Hopefully younger drummers will see that value grow as they grow with you.. Thank you for what you give so freely Steve Holmes
You do a great job of communicating what can be challenging to present. You’ve really done the work in making this comprehensible visually and aurally. Bravissimo.
Not only does Steve get straight to the point, but he is such a master of what he teaches! That fill around 4:10 had me rewinding so many times. So cool.
In my opinion your videos are light years ahead of Drumeo. More advanced concepts explained extremely well. Great job and thank you for your hard work in putting together these videos!
Steve I have to tell you that you are one of best sounding drummers doing these educational videos. Your playing is exceptional. Your topics are useful and inspiring. I am posting this because I want you make more of these!! Thank you Steve!
Awesome. I remember Adam Nussbaum explaining some of this to me in 1991(-ish). At the same time I dug the Wynton Marsalis record "Standards", with their version of April in Paris. I love this topic. Great video. Thanks Steve!
Thank you for this lesson! I feel like I actually have a chance of playing this kind of stuff now. I enjoy your teaching style and your articulation very much. In the past few years I’ve discovered a few great learning channels including yours, Rob Brown, Joe Crabtree, Sweetwater with Nick D’Virgilio, Todd Sucherman, Drumeo, Sounds Like A Drum and a few others that I’m forgetting. You all have a gift for explaining concepts effectively with a relaxed approach and excellent demonstrations. I especially appreciate your transcriptions and emphasis on understanding the way the figures relate to the quarter notes. I’ve struggled with long triplet feels for a long time, especially how to write and sing them, but your explanations, written examples and demonstrations here have shined a new light for me. Thanks again, a lot! I will help support your channel and I look forward to learning more from you!👍
First off, you have a great drum AND cymbal sound. I mean you can actually hear the cymbals with clarity unlike so many videos out there that are mixed so drum heavy and you can barely hear the cymbals. I love cymbal demo videos....wow the snare sounds great, oh yeah what ride is that again? I love your sense of humor! Your feel is incredible. I mean very deep pocket feel and solid. That alone makes this a joy to listen to. Keep it up. Great video.
Excellent Video! and funny too. Possibly quite a reach for some but this kind of instruction is valuable and a great explanation of the subject in very practical demonstration.
Man, you are an excellent instructor. I am in an original music situation right now and working on a tune where there is time change that NOBODY is adhering to. It's fusiony, ska-ish thing with a heavy rock halftime-feel break, but true halftime would be too slow. I'm gonna try this instead, hopefully without too much resistance. Thank you!
Not only are you a great drummer, but I believe you're one of the best teachers out there. Your lessons are invaluable and continue to give clarity to the, "How did he do that?", head-scratchers that mystify us drummers. Thanks for continually helping us to unlock these doors. Looking forward to the next lesson. P.S.~Your drums and cymbals are killer!
Thumbs up #144 View #2,522 Comment #28 Hell yea that was cool. Great explanation very user friendly and very selfless of you to share. Thank you for recording, editing and uploading. Very cool indeed.
PASS is both hands,THE is right hand, SALT is the left hand, AND is right hand, PEP is left hand, PER is right hand. so right hand is 4 beats and left is 3 beats in this case.
You send the metronome in the recording program to its own track and add it to the mix as you want. Google it for details bit I'm pretty sure that was it. I did it in Logic.
one question steve, your hihat is going every second but i have difficulties with playing it through if i have to play the triplets , on which note is it going trough?
There is indeed a shortage of drum videos like this. Please keep them coming
Thanks for the lessons
naspuloy great videos
This is the best-explained best-demonstrated video I've found on this. You should do a whole series on the other types of metric modulation.
Thanks so much!
5:22 - Warning. While trying to dance to this, I dislocated my hip. If you must dance, please proceed with caution.
Honestly I’m still kind of a newbie to drums at 59, I don’t know what hell your talking about I just really enjoy watching you play, thank you sir !!
Dont stop playing man!
Guys at Drumeo should take notice. Great stuff as always!
JulianFernandez oi
Ya, I don't really get much out of Drumeo. This is great though.
Indeed
Too advanced for drumeo lol
No one at drumeo can play. Blind leading the blind over there.
My compliments, very good drumner/teacher/musician, clean explanación, and very understand able

@Steve Holmes How do you record your drum video with the click? Thanks
You send the metronome in the recording program to its own track and add it to the mix as you want. Google it for details bit I'm pretty sure that was it. I did it in Logic.
