3 Beginner Lure Fishing Mistakes + How To Fix Them!

  • Lure fishing techniques are developed through practice! If you don't know how to use fishing lures, specifically saltwater and inshore fishing lures, this video is for you! Follow us on Fishbrain! bit.ly/fishbrai...
The fishing lure you choose is crucial to a good day of fishing! Every fishing lure has its own function. Some are meant to stay about the surface of the water, others are meant to be used at the bottom. We are fishing for striped bass here in Maryland using topwater plugs. The “Spook” is a popular saltwater and freshwater fishing lure and it works wonders! We use a method called “Walk the Dog” to animate and give the lure action.

Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

I tried walking the dog with no luck, but found stopping every few seconds and letting the lure sit then giving 2-3 more tugs is when I kept getting bites. They would chase, sit and wait, and as soon as it was about to move again, I felt fish on.

Great video series. It’s really amazing how two people can be using the same lure, and yet one person catches significantly more fish. Cadence, speed, or whatever can have so much to do with success. Sometimes you’ll hear a very experienced fisherman state that they had an off day. I believe that anyone that practices enough, really can tell when they are “off”. Just as musicians, golf players, or anyone that hones their skill and craft through practice. I fish about 275 days a year, and I know that when I get things right, I can feel it.

Great video, I am glad to see Erin fishing again. I enjoy watching your videos, I do learn quite a bit from watching your videos. I am wanting to start a fishing ministry at my church. I love teaching people how to fish, even though I get alittle agitated sometimes. It always pays off when someone who has never caught a fish gets one in,no matter how big the fish is. I am continuing to pray for you and your family and your friends. Keep up the good work.

Mistake #4: never hook your lure onto your line guides eyes. It will damage the ceramic eye and wear out your line faster. That’s why they put a line keeper near the grip of your rod.

Yesterday I hooked a 2 or 3 lb bass on a Rebel crawdad lure. The bass hit the lure on the 3rd or 4th cast. I had my drag too loose because I wasnt able to get a strong hook set. The bass shook the hook after a few seconds. It was a learning experience though. I tightened my drag a little.

been getting skunked regularly lately, and actually lost faith in my top water lures (i usually use a regular ol rapala jointed floater). definitely gonna try a couple different things with this new information, number 1 definitely being get a new reel. almost all of the rod-reel combos for sale in my area at beginner price points are high gear ratio, i haven't found one below 4:1 yet, and i've seen as high as 5.5:1. the second big thing is going to be slowing down and smoothing out my twitches and jerks. I'm thinking by virtue of retrieving too fast, i'm not giving the lures a realistic-, lifelike-enough action. Once i get these two things sorted, and some of the smaller details like spot selection (i'm thinking of returning to journaling my fishing trips in order to accumulate data to help with this), i'll bet i'll be getting bites again. I'll make a trip out to one of my skunk holes soon and reply to this comment with an update on how things went. looking forward to some improvement, i've only caught 3 fish this year, 2 of them were accidental hooks in the side, and none of them was over 8 inches (one was a baby striper i felt so bad about, hooked it clean through the tail muscle). aside from that, i've had 3 good fish on that all managed to spit the hook right before i yanked em out of the water. needless to say, it's been a bad season for me which is why i'm here lol

Use a top water hard bait, where it has spinning "propellers" and reel in fast. It'll splash water and make an aggressive fish mad, as to attack it. Barely missed a 9-12 lb fish (bass or catfish) couldn't tell at the distance.

I love how much Erin enjoys everything. it makes me appreciate everything more myself. I also love when your dad is filmed. I loved in the cape cod episode when he caught 2 huge strippers & returned them and said not to be greedy.
More video of Erin & your dad. also do some of the editing. don't make Erin do all the work. I'm a talker too so I know being in front of camera is fun for you and editing is a pain for a creative generous person like Erin. it is obvious she loves you and your family. I have many friends who are from different backgrounds as we're my parents. Follow your ❤ heart. I'd like to just correct you on one thing. When a fish hits your lure, do not stop or slow down. This gives off an unnatural look and the fish will most probably leave your lure. What you're supposed to do is speed up to give off the natural look of the fish trying to get away.

Distance-wise how far out is a good amount? Top water lures tend to be quite lightweight and my casting distance isn't quite far (15 metres) maximum... What am I doing wrong?

Did you use a ball bearings swivel further up the line?

You should get an RV and just travel the country fishing in every state!
