Ok so first and foremost a massive thank you to everyone who has watched and commented on this video over the last few days. There are far to many comments for me to reply to everyone at the moment. There are some mixed views on here now in the comments section with regards to this video. Anyhow this video was just a short clip taken from a much longer video called The Forth road bridge ( here is a link to the full video yeah )

Well as well has being a biker i have my HGV to and to be honest other drivers just do not understand trucks at all, they dont realize the blind spots you have or how wide you need to take corners etc. One of my pet hates is when a car just about to enter traffic lights slams on their breaks at amber not realizing the truck behind cannot stop on a dime. Defensive driving in a truck is a must yet other drivers need to be taught these things to.

Completely agree with everyone on the road being complete twats... including lorry drivers! My annoyance is when HGV's use the 'Coaches only' parking at services and my passengers have to walk from a dangerous part of the services area!

Excellent. I agree with your philosophy! I’m always considerate of hgv drivers. I do see many though, that drive too close behind others, overtake and don’t have the speed or momentum then hold up the number two lane for miles. A couple of days ago I had to hold back in the number three lane to wait for a a wide load with a small house on its back, that didn’t have speed of momentum to pass (in high winds!) the hgv in number one lane. For ages he held in number 2 with his load overhanging number three. Shocking.

I have always had respect for truck drivers to the point that I will always give way to them, no matter how far I am along the road to them. As an ex class 1 ADR driver I absolutely 100% completely agree with you, my old instructor when I first started learning to drive cars said something that stuck with me forever, he said, “when you’re driving just remember that everyone else is complete and utter dickhead that will do whatever it takes to ruin your day, so that means you have to anticipate what drivers could possibly do 10 vehicles away in every direction and be ready to avoid them safely”. That’s stayed with me through my entire military driving career and saved my life once or twice too, when you see some of the people on the roads today you wonder how the hell they have a license in most cases.
I’m no longer on the roads but, I don’t envy you heavy hauler boy having to deal with these idiots nowadays. Stay safe driver and keep ya head on a swivel 👍🇬🇧

    Typical HGV driver.
As a rule of thumb, whatever a HGV driver tells you he earns, knock a third off and then you're closer to the true amount.
Drivers like boasting about £50k earnings but very few actually ever earn anywhere near that.
The ones that do earn 50k are doing 70-80 hrs per week and alternating 5/6 shifts pw and 4/5 nights away pw to get that money, no life balance whatsoever.
I've worked in the industry for over 20 years and over 15 of those years have been spent on petrol/chemical and bitumen tankers, I've only touched £50k on a couple of occasions and it made me miserable, depressed and stressed because I was giving up my entire life to do it, not worth it at all, better off with £35k and an actual home, family and social life IMO.
Most HGV drivers talk a lot of BS when It comes to money.

Westbound where the 50mph limit comes in to slow traffic going down the slip road to the M8 is really bad for people waiting till the last second before changing from lane 2 to lane 1.
Also people seem to lack the ability to use the slip road when joining the bypass, a lot of them stop like they're at a give way rather than use the length of the slip road. This just causes more delays as traffic has to slow to let them on. Keep them coming mate 😎

Drive like "everyone else around you is a complete 2@" - been driving and riding on the roads using this exact thinking since I got my licences. It's saved my life countless times but its not foolproof. There are still careless drivers and riders (both motorised and manual powered) that have the ability to catch you out. Driver standards have taken a serious tumble since I got on the road and it's getting more dangerous. More and more raod users, both domestic and commercial, present as either having a lack of knoweledge, consideration, or patience. The DVSA need to pull their fingers out, assess drivers' abilities properly, and stop handing out licences out just to get their waiting lists down. @Chatting with me in an HGV - I totally agree with what you said at 3.18 and again at the end of your video. It is exactly what I tell my wife and our daughter when they get in their cars. I tell them to watch out for the idiots - keep their wits about them, 360 degrees!! Always keep checking their mirrors and make sure they are properly set before they even put on their seat belt. It’s not their driving I worry about, it’s the idiots out there that they don’t notice - they are the ones to be wary of. I have always made sure that my wife knows what a 2 second (or in the wet, a 4 second) space looks like. It’s simple - pick something to mark the start of your measuring point, like the vehicle in front driving past something at the side of the road, or driving over a shadow in the road and then say “ONE-ONE THOUSAND, TWO-ONE THOUSAND”. If you have driven past or over that initial ‘mark’ before you can complete saying that, you are within a 2 second gap and are more likely to have an accident by not being able to stop in time if the vehicle in front rear ends someone. Always maintain a gap!! It could save your life.

First time i was on it the satnav told me to keep left but i was in right lane and couldn't get back across, i started flapping then realised literally 5 seconds later that they join back together anyway.

Passenger or no passenger in the car, you drive as if you’ve got 1 000 eggs in the car, you have to get from point A to point B without cracking or breaking a single egg. That probably explains why my tyres could do 50k+, along with the brake shoes/pads.

Good video and one I have experienced many times from the cabs of artics and caravaning.
But firstly, I have to check myself from agreeing with you in part because I can understand that car drivers forgetting that they are towing the van and not allowing enough safe distance after overtaking .
As my old hgv instructor (ex military) would say, "Treat ALL car drivers as though they can't see past the end of their nose, and you'll be alright ".
As for the caravan going in the wrong lane, I have done the same thing in every type of vehicle on the road AND I suggest so has everybody else at one time or another.
The main problems with caravans pulled by little cars is the drivers can't see much further past other vehicles and as they're often away from familiar roads its understandable they'll make these mistakes so the moral of the story is keep well away and prepare to give way to them.
As another point of interest, large vehicle drivers need to be aware that the LAW has been changed and this puts the blame onto the 'LARGEST' vehicle in the event of an accident so it would be your responsibility to explain why you didn't take evasive action or steps to avoid/anticipate the collision.
Unless you want to spend over half an hour or a day reporting an accident.
    Your choice.

What a lot of prissy little commenters on here shouting about driving with only one hand on the wheel. Presumeably they're beginners with no experience, only able to repeat the silly formulas of their mechanically-minded instructors.
In the real world, no one has ever suffered diminished control from taking a hand from the wheel - for any length of time. I've certainly never seen that or heard of it, and I happen to have been driving for over sixty years, from tractors when I was thirteen to cruiser bikes now at seventy-four, with vehicles of all kinds in between, including many years and hundreds of thousands of miles of long-distance Class 1. On the contrary, some of the worst driving I've seen has been from new drivers jerkily feeding the wheel from hand-to-hand, especially when straightening up, instead of using the vehicle's castoring effect.
    Really rubbish teaching.

Doesn't even have to be high speed mate. I live in a small town of 2000 people. In our town square car park there's a shunt almost every day as someone reverses out of a space without a single glance in the direction they're travelling. Often right into the rear of someone else doing exactly the same thing! In more than one case, taking out people, including about 6 years ago, myself!
In one recent case, an elderly driver took out the sides of two other cars, and drove off, completely unaware he'd had a collision, even though he was now dragging a front wing!
I'm an old fart myself, and not that long ago was involved in a couple of minor near misses while driving. I had no choice but to conclude they had been largely my fault.
Within weeks - as I'd always promised myself I would - I'd surrendered my licence. If I've no other comfort these days, it's at least a certainty that I won't be hurting anyone because I'm still not too old to see sense.
I have elderly neighbours who continue to refuse to see sense. They imagine themselves superb drivers when they're scarcely even capable.

My son was a truck driver but got out and is now a freight train driver. A truck driver can drive slowly in fog, snow in badly lit roads, etc while a train driver HAS to drive by the speeds set on any particular route. Diving at 70mph in the dark, in driving rain when you only have signals to go by is very stressful, given that it can take nearly a mile to stop at those speeds. Also he can't slow down when he passes through a crowded station knowing that at any moment a person may jump in front of his train. My son knows several other drivers who have experienced a suicide and it can take years to get over it. There's a lot more to driving a train than just pulling a controller.
