    As a truck driver of 32 years I feel your pain…the stress is unbelievable in these situations…I used to go to a delivery in Bridport down roads like that and would always hit a problem on them , for example an elderly person towing a caravan coming towards me who couldn’t reverse meaning I had to reverse miles to let them past.

    Did farm collections for 5 years and honestly the Phillip's Street Atlas' are the best thing to use. Also if you ever get in this situation again ask at one of the farms what roads you should use. All of the farmers I asked were nothing but helpful and they know the area better than anyone.

    • @djharry2821

      Oh and ignore the unsuitable for HGV signs in these areas. They don't mean anything and those roads are sometimes the best ones to use. Make your own judgement whether or not its suitable

    • @amogrows
      @amogrows ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djharry2821 I've had to deliver up some of those 'unsuitable for HGV' roads. I can see why the sign is there but the sign doesn't strictly state hgvs are prohibited. It's more of a cautionary indicator or advice.
      I have that atlas. I've never used it. I don't think I've ever brought it to work even though I bought it with the intention of using it and improving my geography.

      You have to be wary though of the "the last driver did ..." bullsh1t! Consignees who are desperate for their delivery because they have chosen to do business in a place where a 7.5 tonner will struggle, will tell all sorts of lies about access. Mind you, most farmers are dealing with large machines every day so they 'get it'. Posties are also a good source of knowledge: never let a red van go past in these places!
      - Tree fell on truck and nearly wrote off two week old DAF cab. Bad day.
      - Arrived at deserted farmyard, miles from anywhere. Six cars and various machines parked randomly and mud everywhere so took over 90 minutes to turn around and get out.
      - Had to phone one haulier during approach to a coastal village to tell him if I went any further he would have to hire a Boeing Chinook to lift the truck out. Did well to only have a 30 minute reverse to get out.
      - Local councils across the country work hard to make street furniture in towns just as obstructive as cart-track farm access, deliberately reducing the efficiency of local commerce. F#

    I remember a few years ago working for TNT we had a new starter with a fresh HGV license,so TNT gave him local runs for the first week,great start for the young lad no accidents,he wanted to gain more experience so joined an agencie, they immediately offered s run for him to Cadburys this was his longest run,everything started fine got within 5 miles of Cadburys , the sat nav at one roundabout said a certain way, the signpost said another he doubted the sat nav and followed the signpost,the road he took sent him to a amateur football pitch,and he got stuck on there pitch.caused loads damage to the grass trying to get his HGV off. Realised after about 10 minutes hes screwed up , had to call for tow vehicle ,didnt really explain about how stuck he was,tow vehicle turned up then promptly turned back round telling the young lad # we need a bigger truck..Time has passed by and schools start to finish. Unfortunately for the young lad there is a match planned for 5.30 hes completely unaware of this.Sat in his cabin waiting to be rescued the agency' he working for have now found outabout his dilemma of being stuck in the mud and start phoning him. Hes talking away for a few minutes when in the distance the football teams mums dads etc etc start turning up,in there beloved football pitch was a HGV fully loaded with 2 to 3 ft gash hole on there on prized pitch about 40ft plus in length all going off in multiple directions,to say these people weren't happy would probably be a understatement,the young lad driver watching all this unfold from his cabin,disconnected the agency call and promptly phoned the police in fear of his life.The police promptly turned up from his request to cool the situation down,not long after so did a new tow truck,,alas the young lad never worked for that agency again,had something to do with a £2500 grand tow truck bill they received. HAPPY DRIVING stay safe

    Although you are using the sat nav also have a map book with you and also use Google maps. All three as a combination will help divert from situations like that. Sat Nav doesn't always show road closures as Google maps 99% of the time will. Also ring your transport office as they should also know the best route to take.

    A Sat Nav is not always the best choice for navigation and that’s even the Specialist Truck Sat Nav which you can buy and program with your vehicles Height and Weight,one of the best things you can buy is the Old Truckers Atlas ( The Paper one and NOT Electronic )…..it lists Bridges,Axle Weights and shows Roads suitable for HGV’s 🤷‍♂️.
    It does mean that you have to plan your Journey and Route but it is the best way rather than being reliant on your Sat Nav ( remember even if you are following a Sat Nav Specific to HGV you as the driver can still be held accountable if you hit a bridge or go through or over a Weight limit !! )….You are the one who is in control and should be aware of your responsibility in preparing your route rather than relying on a piece of Electronics !.
    The Truckers Atlas comes in handy for marking down places/lay-bys where you can Stop and for other places such as where the Toilets are located/clean and which shower locations are available and ok ( still wear your flip flops tho Lol 😂 ).
    I don’t think that there is any Driver who hasn’t come across a Obstacle and had to make a Hard Choice but be aware that these days with these small cameras everywhere you really need to be careful and aware ( if you see a camera and you are just before a 3T Axle weight Bridge) Ring the Police because you are supposed to be escorted by them if you have to reverse a long ways back ( you require a second person lookout on the public highway ).
    I used to be a HGV Driver and a Crane ( Mobile/Static/Tower ) Driver and regularly drove a Lorry Loader 8 Wheeler Rigid fitted with a 60 T/M and a 72 T/M ( we did wide/long/Overheight abnormal loads ).

    I am with you bro! It reminds me when I messed up the very last exit in the roundabout that would've taken me to the truck stop but the other exit takes to a road that was unsuitable for HGVs (road signs were so faded and wasn't obvious). I was about to p iss myself for long hours due to traffic, had about 20 minutes driving time left and yes, that road was very unsuitable. :DDD Story has a happy end coz I managed to stop with a 4h 27mins driving time and not much later I had my best p iss of my life so far.

Narrow roads, overhanging buildings, low bridges.... Even better if you're doing it in the dark 😂 even the best HGV satnavs don't seem to catch the "unsuitable for HGV" roads...

    • @gravemind6536
      @gravemind6536 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The unsuitable for HGV sign is not a restriction on using the road so no the Sat Navs don't pick up on it and sometimes they have to be used on deliveries anyway. Its to deter Lorry drivers from using roads like that as a rat run

    You did well to deal with that. But going by your videos you must be a fairly new driver.
    As soon as you get your destination address phone the customer as them the best way in, then put the route into Google maps first and use satellite view let you get a better idea of all the roads to the delivery and what ones are suitable, and if your still not sure click on a road and use street view as street view can be life saver. I always planned my routes that way and it never let me down. Also you must have a good boss as a lot of HGV companies would sack drivers for a lot of the situations you get in as it’s down to poor planning all your situation have been easily avoided.
