    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Gabriel Shear (John Travolta) discusses the problem with Hollywood films.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Director Dominic Sena follows up his stylish action film Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) with this high-tech thriller. John Travolta stars as Gabriel Shear, a charismatic spy who plots to steal a multi-billion-dollar fortune in illegal government funds. In order to make his scheme work, however, Gabriel needs some help from a computer hacker, which is where Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman) comes in. Stanley has been paroled from prison after serving a lengthy sentence for penetrating the FBI's cyber-surveillance operations. Issued a restraining order that keeps him away from computers and living penniless in a trailer park, Stanley wants only to be reunited with his daughter Holly, who's in the custody of his ex-wife, now remarried to a pornographer. Gabriel and his partner Ginger (Halle Berry) offer Stanley the chance to get his child back in exchange for his help, but the hacker soon realizes he's a pawn in a larger operation than the high-tech bank heist he thought he was perpetrating. In the meantime, a dedicated federal agent (Don Cheadle), the same man who once arrested Stanley, is trying to expose Gabriel's operation. Swordfish also stars Sam Shepard and Zach Grenier.

      He’s good at times but he won the razzie for a reason. He over plays the character at times so it comes off as childish. And honestly he looks 50-60 the character is supposed to be like 30-40. He just looks too old

      I don’t think he looks too old here, and it’s a good movie, but 20 years later, it’s hard not to hear “Scientology” ringing in my head when I see the guy. Good movie though.

    I will never forget the moment shortly after this scene where the bomb vest goes off. This was the first movie I watched after purchasing my surround sound system and omg, watching movies would never be the same. The sound of the ball bearings whizzing around the room and how the room shook during the explosions. Sound quality is more important than picture quality imo.

      I agree I think this is one of his more underrated performances. After his big comeback in Pulp Fiction in '94, he had a 7-year stretch of popularity and good movies including this one. And then I can't honestly remember anything he's done remotely good since this movie.

      Great acting with Travolta.
      Everybody else? Not so much.
      Jackman trying to look like he is an actual hacker is pure comedy gold.
      He taps his fingers on the keyboards like it's a piano concerto, with these dramatic "YES!" and "NO NO NO!" moments as he hacks.
      Travolta I take seriously in this movie. Very seriously.

      Well, the remake of taking of Pelham 123 with John Travolta and Denzel Washington to quote Travolta in this film, didn’t push the envelope. It should have been more like how Speed, die hard 1, 2, 3 and 4, blown away 1994, Deja vu 2006, broken arrow and face/off were over the top. With vehicles like trains, buses and boats flying in the air and crashing and landing and blowing up. It should have been more simplified. He should’ve had more guys and planting bombs all around the city and in the subways too. Like I know it was made after 9/11 but still you got to go ballistic with action. And plus travolta and Washington should have had a fight scene like Travolta had with Christian slater in broken arrow and Nicolas cage in face/off.

    This is such a strange film.
    The idea behind it is pretty cool, just didnt nail it.
    Its also a great openinh scene, let down by weird filming choices.

    "I'm talking about a lack of realism. Why didn't Sonny start shooting hostages in Dog Day Afternoon?" Ummmm...because that's not what happened in real life and it's based on a true story? Wouldn't showing what actually happened count as realism?

    • @maiabelen6413
      @maiabelen6413 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Technically, we do not know what is actually real. We only believe what we see is portrayed as the “true story” through the media. So what the film is a documentary or is based on a true story, how do we know what we are watching is 110% authentically real? Just a train for thought :)

    You know the problem with this scene? The goddamn camera moves that don't make any sense. The guy is calm and collected but the camera insists on flinging itself around and giving a completely different impression. Short-sighted direction, eh?
    Note that I haven't seen this movie, just stumbled upon this scene because I was looking for the explosion sequence as an example of a post-matrix bullet time effect.

      ^who says you need to have made a movie to know that this is bad directing? The camera keeps changing its focus and unnecessary cutting for no reason. The camera work is shifting so much that it's distracting from the actual dialogue that's being spoken. There's no purpose to it. It seems to change our focus and distract us solely for the purpose of being edgy

    • @redlightmax
      @redlightmax 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +vanishy0urself Yep, the jittery camera moves completely undercut the calm demeanour of Travolta's character. It should've been a steady shot with a slow zoom into his face.
