Swordfish alternate ending

  • The DVD version contains an alternate ending wherein Ginger is told in the bank that the account is already almost empty, alluding to the possibility that Stanley has played one final trick on them and taken the money himself. When Ginger tells Gabriel about this, he takes it in stride and asks her to join him on a trip to Istanbul. In a companion scene to the alternate ending, Stanley is shown on a trip with his daughter in a brand new RV. While eating at a diner, Stanley is shown transferring billions of dollars to various charities before continuing his trip.

Nice ending. But I prefer the original ending from this. Gabriel is an anti-hero, not really a villain. And he did what he did because he was following a mission which he believes in his heart is right. Stanley on his part got a happy ending with his daughter with him. And I like to think that he still has that 10 million dollars that Gabriel paid him for the job.

The original ending is better. I like that the bad guy wins, but the hero still lives happily ever after. It's far more interesting.

I'm not sure but this ending fits the movie much more, "Not everything ends the way you think it should, besides audiences love happy endings" and that's what this whole thing was setting up. He does all this horrible shit to steal the money to start his own Blackcell to fight terrorists because horrible stuff leads to the greater good, but the ending was supposed to be Stanley realizing he was tricked, then seeking out the money that won't be hidden because Gabriel thinks that Stanley believes that both of them are dead when he put it all together with the "houdini" flashback scene.
So the greater good is achieved by Stanley donating it all to charity that was gonna be used to fight more wars and "kill terrorist" when Gabriel could be insane and decide "everyone is a terrorist" with how he killed the Senator because he decided he was a traitor because he tried to kill Gabriel for attracting too much attention from the FBI. But this ending is weak in the sense Gabriel just seems to give up and want to live a life free of his burden which doesn't fit character at all.

Someone, either the law or the bad guys, would find Stanley to try to get the money and punish and kill him (and his daughter) for stealing it.
Even if Stanley kept none of it he still stole it and the money paid to him was illegal income.
This would have been huge plot hole.
The intro refers to lack of realism in movies.
It is more realistic that huge sums of cash would be used to finance ultra secret agendas both good and bad.

I am very surprised by this alternate ending. In this ending, Stanley and his daughter leaves the dog in the Suburban while they are in the desert.
In the original version, they didn't show the dog in the Suburban.

Geez, they left Scrappy in the truck with the windows up during their whole meal? (or maybe they left the truck running and just locked the doors).
In any case, I also like this ending much better. But, as we know in real life - usually the bad guys win.

    • @shamusbob7969
      @shamusbob7969 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah I agree, better ending, this is definitely what they were leading up to with bad things=the greater good with Stanley taking all the money that was stolen and innocent people killed for, and donated it to "The Greater Good", especially with how Stanley can hack into anything and he already knows both Ginger and Gabriel are alive so he knows the money is still reachable in a certain amount of time before they move it.
I always found Swordfish to be very nihilistic and not in a clever way but in a childish sort of way, but this ending made this film have more of a "point" and wasn't very nihilistic at all with Stanley doing what he believes is the Greater Good vs Gabriels idea of it, both of them used a bank robbery where innocent people died to fund something they believed in, the difference in this ending is Stanley didn't use the money to kill more innocent people as Gabriel kills the terrorist at the end on a crowded boat with innocent people on it.

Exactly the same except instead of her not getting the money at the bank, she divides it to each account evenly, returns to him on the boat and they ride off happily-ever-after... until a news broadcast describes and shows a terrorist's yacht blowing up, the boat they were riding towards.

I'm not sure but this ending fits the movie much more, "Not everything ends the way you think it should, besides audiences love happy endings" and that's what this whole thing was setting up. So donating it all to charity, he used this whole horrible act to lead to good, which is a lesson Stanley teaches Travolta after he teaches him the lesson on "The Greater Good" and this is also a loopback to how Stanley leaked that the FBI were monitoring people's emails. But where THIS ending loses me is Travola just being "cool" and decides to sort of be free of his burden when we're shown the exact opposite of him being a true believer but I guess the director wanted him to be exhausted with fighting but it doesn't come off that way at all, he just seems "oh well, guess I'll stop believing in my cause, let's go and enjoy Instanbul!" whereas him finding out that the guy on the boat is a billionaire and him and Ginger instead of blowing it up, stop the sequence and
decide to start "watching" him implying they'll start another operation to steal billions of dollars.

The ending had nothing to do with nationality. Not entirely sure what it was about, but most likely he was taking down a terrorist (he was in the same port riding in the direction of the boat just before it blew up). He's a terrorist himself, but he has a code of ethics and motivation for taking down terrorists who threaten the US.

He is not a bad guy.... The whole Gabriel Shear thing was a deception in order for him to get the money so he can have his own war on terrorists.
The point was to fool even Stan cause had Stan known the truth he would probably end up talking to the feds.
John Travolta and Halle Berry's characters were probably black ops agents who wanted to take matters about terrorism into their own hands
