Solid video! My 2019 Accent 1.6 Gamma GDI runs really well on 91 octane - Thankfully / surprisingly the ECU allows the car to take advantage of its high compression and direction injection. 👍 The engine is significantly more zippy on 91 and the fuel economy improves around 5 MPG on the highway. I ran several tanks of 94 octane and even a couple 98 octane tanks to test the limits of the stock ECU. Performance and gas mileage suffered with any octane higher than 91. Shortly after I had a P0420 code and had to replace the catalytic converter (covered under warranty). The super high octane fuel not only hurt performance but they also damaged the cat. Figured I'd share my experience. This motor was designed to run 91 octane exceptionally well and completely changes the character of the car in my opinion.

I don't blame hardworking folks who dare NOT touch any Kia or Hyundai vehicle. With the massive bill they shouldered from the engine failure fiasco plus other major safety recalls, guess who will foot the bill eventually?
Thats why its detrimental to use atleast mid grade gas, gas additives occasionaly between fill ups, only OEM oil filters and change oil every 3500 to 4k miles. These engines as all kia/hyundai engines have weak oil pumps.
@@8020Media The question then becomes why. GDI + Turbo = high maintenance by default. Very reliable starts around 250k+. These engines are just not of the same class as say a 2AR-FE. PFI + NA vs GDI + Turbo, the NA engine is going to win every time on the reliability front. Mine has a slight ruff idle whenbi cold start it every morning but goea away after 10 seconds and all is fine after. Should i be worried??
A - So long as it goes away, you should be good. We have a video on rough idle that we think could help in the future: th-cam.com/video/BiYsqRJCLhE/w-d-xo.html
@@8020Media cheers dude
A - Keep us updated!
No mention of oil consumption? That’s a huge issue with these.
M - Thanks for this added insight.
a "huge issue" would include a source you would cite, normally
Uhm
Okay and what part of the system is consuming the oil? Is it one, mulitple? Or do you not know?
In a Kia Rio 2019 s … does it have a gamma or a gamma 2 ?
S - Should be a gamma 2.
@@8020Media Ok… but are some Sensors interchangeable between Engines Because I’ve replaced a sensor that goes to a gamma 1 in my Kia 2019 and it’s running like a Champ ?
S - I'm sure they are. Very similar engines.
What about the Hyundai i20n engine ?
L - We will add it to the list.
So what your saying is, rather than a catch can. You vent it to atmosphere. Or somewhere that rusts for active rust protection😅
S - You can do either
Celestial - Thanks for the feedback and for sharing your experience!
I recently bought a Kia 2023 forte gt manual transmission..what would you suggest I get ? I only have 12000 miles on it ? I’m new the car world n terminology . Have a more tutorial for dummies on the 1.6turbo ?? lol 😂
K - As far as mods?
Yes mods and also on the oil catch can
K - We'll add this to the list.
Does Hyundai offer this walnut service at most of their dealerships? is it astronomically expensive?
Wrath - They likely do, but we would strongly recommend going to a small shop to get this done. Dealerships will likely charge much more than your regular small shops.
I use 91 octane gas and a fuel system cleaner every 10000 miles , should have no problems for the life of the engine
J - Thanks for sharing your experience. How many miles do you have on it currently?
@8020Media I have had Volkswagens , and currently have two kia's GDI engines the trick is to change the oil , good gas for a more complete burn and a fuel system cleaner ( redline fuel system cleanerc) make sure it is a complete fuel system cleaner my cars always purr like a kitten.
J - Thanks for sharing!
I don't blame hardworking folks who dare NOT touch any Kia or Hyundai vehicle. With the massive bill they shouldered from the engine failure fiasco plus other major safety recalls, guess who will foot the bill eventually?
Tony - We've seen many Hyundai's and Kia's be reliable.. All depends on maintenance.
Thats why its detrimental to use atleast mid grade gas, gas additives occasionaly between fill ups, only OEM oil filters and change oil every 3500 to 4k miles. These engines as all kia/hyundai engines have weak oil pumps.
R - Well said!
I thought the 1.6 is not port injection
Colton - Here's our article that will assist with this: tuningpro.co/hyundai-1-6-mpi-gdi-engine-problems/
carbon will cause the valves to stick open
Tony - This is possible.
Mine has 226k miles. 2014 kia rio.
Tiago - Nice! Any issues?
@@8020Media it started burning oil about 5000 miles ago. I believe it’s just the rings. OK for the mileage.
Ah. Pretty common at that mileage. Seems like you've gotten a lot of use out of it with relatively few problems, so congrats! Keep us updated!
blowby will cause oil leaks
Tony - This is possible.
Save you a bunch of time;
Don't mess with these things, they are trash.
Just buy Toyota or Honda.
B - Not necessarily true. These can be VERY reliable if taken care of properly, just like any other vehicle.
If i got 7k to go buy a car with and it needs to work and last a long time (Assuming you do your homework and have it looked over)
We are talking like a Elantra or a Camry or a Corolla, and like a Civic with their very good 2.0L.
Again, why spend on the engine that has had problems vs the cars with engines that are generally bulletproof when taken care of? The Honda or Toyota is boring, but the better option in most cases.
B - Thanks for sharing this insight. Very reliable being 250k might be a stretch, but we appreciate you taking the time to share.
Why are you still making video on 1.6 T gamma in 2023?. This is rubbish and looking for contents to create video clip. Hyundai is using Smart Stream II 1.6T and this decent engine at least with current reliability record.
M - Why wouldn't we when there are millions of these engines on the road...? We don't make "clips", we make long form content.
Just now the theta engines are blowing up. Now gamma. Don’t have high hopes.
Stark - Yep.
