    On loading games from the SD card, Kevtris eventually released a jailbroken firmware for the Analogue NT. There's really no reason to believe that won't eventually happen with the Super NT as well

    I'm glad you finally got the opportunity to review a proper clone. See they all don't suck.

    Very nice review. Although this is technically more expensive than other "clones" compared to the NES version (at a whopping $500) this is much more affordable. I'm thinking about picking one up. Thanks!

    Went through star fox last night on this and it was amazing. The slowdown on big explosion and heavy polygon parts were there but ran through then at 60fps.so it was smooth slowdown if that makes any sense lol. The action was seem less . There is no lag. Even compared to the best emulator setup there's no comparison. This is the best snes experience ever

    This is the best review of this console as of yet. You touched on things many others that reviewed this same console didn't. It was also really cool that you opened up and gave us a peek at the guts!! The slow down you mentioned is not even slightly a big deal at all. To me 16 bit nintendo games are the sweet spot on the 8 bit to 64 bit bar graph in my opinion. There are just to many pros as opposed to con on justify this buy. The pal/ntsc option makes this buy a no brainer for me. I should have Pre-order mine early. Anyways, I really like your reviews cause they are very straight forward and to the point. This video was ear candy for my GEEK cravings. Keep up the great work!!

    I almost pre-ordered one, and was more than willing to spend the $189 for a unit, but the $40 domestic ground shipping killed the deal for me.

    Let's see this work with Retro-bit's Genesis//NES to SNES adapters. This might be the end-all be all hommage to classic nintendo console gaming. Kevtris really delivered the goods! For me, it's worth the 190$ for sure. It's compact, got the modern hi-res video output, crystal clear audio, and original controller support. Winner winner chicken dinner!

    With jailbreak now you can play roms from the sdcard

  • @Stuchlej

    This is rather interesting piece of tech. The Cyclone V is really a powerhouse. I think, that there must be a lot of LUs free on the fpga itself. If the manufacturer would release some kind of “framework” - lets say pin assignment and constraints for the Quartus - people could “hack” the console and add more features. I can think about some kind of hw speedrun mode for example. Or some kind of tech explenatory mode, that would show how the gamecode itself works.

    • @PSNGormond
      @PSNGormond 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm sure Kevtris will add plenty of extra features in updates as he did for the NT mini.

      The advantage of the NES one is that it can be jailbroken, and then not only can you play ROMS, you can even change the FPGA to emulate the SuperNES, Sega consoles, and a few others I believe (need roms for those obviously, cartridge slot won't transform). Not sure the Super NT can be. You just need to go find the guy who actually created the FPGA program and you can download his jailbroken firmware and off you go.

Sure came in fast from Analogue shipping it out last Friday coming in to Canada.

      I wouldn't say it's "better", and I definitely wouldn't say it's "worse"!! MJR and Colin look at things from very different perspectives. MJR sees things more from a consumer perspective, where as Colin goes more fo the "why and how" of things... like when it comes to MJR's ultimate Gameboy Advance, MJR will say what has been added and what each upgrade does, focusing on the end result the consumer will notice. Colin on the other hand, if he was given that same Gameboy Advance, would get down into how each upgrade works and why it is or is not an improvement from a more technical standpoint.
      I think both channels do a great job as they focus on things from different angles, catering to the same community, but turning their attention to different interest groups within that community... it's almost as if they designed the whole "your channel, my channel" differences that way together!!

    Just an FYI, scanlines look a lot better at 720p. They become too big at higher resolutions. 720p is also an integer scale of 240p, so there are advantages to playing at a lower setting.

    This does look like an impressive piece of kit. Looks like it's on par with (or even succeeds) Hyperkin's Supaboy.
    I might like to get one at point, but having both a SNES and a Super Famicom makes it difficult for the time being.

    • @japzone
      @japzone 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It surpasses Hyperkin's hardware in both accuracy and lag, due to this using an FPGA instead of emulation. Basically, the Super NT can hardware simulate the SNES at full speed and near perfect accuracy. This can't be matched via any other method besides physically recreating the SNES hardware and chips.

    • @charvelgtrs

  • @stopthrm
    @stopthrm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The deepness of the color palette is a lot different than that of a 1 chip snes or snes Jr. with the hd retrovision cables. I think that this is because the FPGA was created using the original design which implemented the Co-Processor. I believe that this was done due to it just being easier to decipher what those chips actually were and for maximum compatibility.

    It sucks that they're still using Micro USB instead of switching to the more sturdy Type-C connector.

    • @PSNGormond
      @PSNGormond 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What difference does it make, it's not something you will be plugging/unplugging a lot - at least it's not a proprietary power connector.

    • @Eddies_Bra-att-ha-grejer
      @Eddies_Bra-att-ha-grejer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's mainly an issue on phones where they wear out quickly because of all the unplugging, but it should have been Type C or USB Mini.

    • @PSNGormond
      @PSNGormond 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Type C would cost more for no real advantage, and I haven't seen anything use Mini USB since my PS3 - The controllers designed for it by 8bitdo do make use of USB-C as it makes more sense in their case as you will be plugging it in from time to time to charge it.

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frankly, I understand the choice as the connectors are probably cheaper (even given the price tag of the console) and they're so widespread you really don't have to bother. Even if Type C is coming and catching up, the Micro is still here well established.
      I frankly also went from love to hate on the Micro connectors, from love of the widespread standard you find everywhere to hate of their flimsy nature of a short and tiny connector.
      Never seen mini USB break or get flimsy over time, but micro? Pretty much all devices I have around.
      Mini USB was killed for no reason if you ask me. Size wise it's not even much bigger if anything in the end counting lock tabs.

    • @tetsujin_144
      @tetsujin_144 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used Type-C long enough to be truly convinced it'll fare better - but I agree, I hate dealing with the micro connector, it's too unreliable.

    Jailbreak firm is now available for the Super Nt. Now you can play snes games straight from an sd card loaded in the slot on the console! Google the super nt jailbreak firmware! Be advised, look up the snes games that utilizes special chips. Those games can only be played from the actual cartridge or the sd2snes flash cart which has most of the special chipsets.

  • @soviut
    @soviut 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Given the FPGA, they could easily do a firmware update that allows games to be played off the flash cart. However, as you mentioned in previous videos about clone consoles, this one is probably too good a contender and any options for piracy just paint a bulls-eye on their heads for lawsuits.

    • @gabriels4862
      @gabriels4862 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was an in-house developed firmware update released for the Analogue NT mini not long after that made the SD cart slot run roms. A similar update from the console creators has already "leaked" for the Super NT.

    They finally did a quality clone console that can also with attachments sold by hyperkin and retrobit, be able to play nes, famicom, genesis, gameboy, gameboy advance. But what about the hyperkin supaboy 1, that console can play all that while also being a portable device and I would prefer that over an snes that while very good, still requires being attached to the tv, but for those who want a great retro console, that would be good with the tv for the better picture.

    And not forget, it even supports the superscope, that’s right,when analoge nt will release a HDMI to composite adaptor, you can hook it up to an old tv and play yoshi safari on it.
    Yeah it’s dumb that they did not included av out right out of the box because their famicom version did contain both outputs .
    The reason why the snes nt is way cheaper is because they use plastic rather then aluminum.

    Technically it can load roms off the sd card (eventually), it just needs to be jailbroken like the previous one. I believe they ship it like that to avoid legal issues, etc.

    190 USD is 239 CAD right now. Not worth it for me. Neat piece of hardware but I'll stick with my original SNES and play on my CRT.

      Go find Kevtris site, the dude who actually reverse engineered the consoles and wrote the FPGA program, see if he has jailbroken the Super NT just like he did the Analogue NT. If not, go for the NT mini; it is jailbroken, and that means you can update the FPGA firmware to turn it into a SNES, not to mention Sega consoles and some other stuff.

      Technically the 190 today is cheaper than the 199 it cost back in 1991
      In fact $199 in 1991 is almost $380 in 2018 money so almost half the price

  • @quiksr20

    SNES was my favorite console, If you try to find a good SNES console unless you get lucky you will atleast pay $75.. I have a retropie setup with emulators and while it works good im sure many people will atttest to its in-inaccuracies.. Many games i struggle to play and I know im hitting the buttons fine, Its hard to tell at first but very frustrating.... Still I think this is only for the die hard SNES fan, Im fighting the urge to get one I really want it :)

    It is an interesting piece of hardware, definitely not aimed at the "new to gaming" crowd or those that don't have nostalgia for this particular console and don't have game carts, not at that price, but I can see how it can be attractive to the avid collector.
    I wish they would make a proper Mega Drive and/or Master System that doesn't suffer from the usual problems all those clones have, as those were the top consoles over this side of the pond... Nintendo just wasn't a thing over here until MUCH later in their console making life (with the exception of the Gameboy)... and work on that price a little...
    One gripe I do have is one I have with all these modern clones, and that is the insistence of using MicroUSB for power, which is very limites in cable section and isn't good with amperage. Now, I don't know what the consumption is for this console in particular, but they tend to always try and counteract this gauge issue by using shorter supply cords, and sometimes, you need those longer options that were more standard with the older consoles. And of course, you can still use a longer, thicker gauge cable, but it's still getting strangled in that microconnector, which is rates at 1.8A, so when you get someone using a 2A or more supply on a RPi because they need those amps, you kind of think about it... But all that is just a personal gripe I have in general with the format that seems to have become the "in" thing.
    Great review as always, Colin!!

      The console says it's rated for 5V at 2A (10W), but I'm not sure it actually draws that much. I was able to power it with the service USB port on two different TVs, one of which is like 10 years old. USB-C would indeed have been nice, but from a practical perspective this console isn't likely to be plugged/unplugged very frequently.
      As for the Mega Drive/Genesis, that's something Analogue has hinted at...time will tell.

      During an interview the owner of Analogue strongly hinted that a Sega console might already be in development.
