Tohru Honda is my favorite and I don't consider her as a bland character. She felt real to me growing up and is a character I relate with the most. I know how it is to be the most empathetic person in my circle of friends and family. Sometimes I feel I care for others more than I care for myself. Just like me, Tohru had her own childhood trauma behind her behaviors and perspective in life. And like most people, Tohru likes to feel she belongs whether it's with her mother, her friends, or the Sohma family. Although I saw the people in my circle everyday it took years for me to realize how important I was in their lives. So before I felt my own sense of belonging into adulthood, my connection with Tohru convinced my adolescent self that I may not be so different and alone after all.

I love Tohru Honda so much. I know some people out there think she's a pretty bland protagonist, ok that's their opinion I guess. But honestly she was a role model for me as a kid and shaped who I wanted to be as a person. ♥️🍙

I honestly can imagine girls growing up felt like Tohru was who they hope to be for sure. She is such a inspirational figure for sure and I feel like you legit just quoted Emerichu but the two of you are completely not alone I'm sure. I think the folks that think she's bland is more since it takes a long while to see her have as much damage as others, almost as if she's already done her healing while everyone else around her has not yet.

@@westsideotaku1555 i have to disagree with you there. from the beginning we see that she is hurting, that she is forcing these dark feelings down because she feels she's not privileged enough to feel them. she doesn't want to so she pushes them away and smiles so no one else sees them. and it's through helping her friends and the sohmas that she is able to start looking at those feelings, thinking those thoughts, even though she isn't ready to fully process them.
she is only able to fully process after kyo is fully able to listen, after she fully trusts him to understand what she means.
im rambling now, but my point is that tohru is only boring if you take her smiles at face value instead of trying to get in her headspace and understand her.

Fruits Basket literally transformed me from an internal to external person.
I often never thought about how other people's lives could be drastically different form me when I was in middle school.
Like obv ophrans and extremely poor people were different from me. But it made me see even a small kindness can mean so much to people you might view as mean or cold or angry. It doesn't cost anyone anything to just be kind, and some people are not in a place to be that way so if you can you should.

Fruit Baskets for me is a work of art, Just watching the entire series was nothing but inspiration for me. Before watching this anime I had a one side view on life but after watching fruit baskets I have a different perspective about the meaning of life. Just watching tohru be that bright light shows how that one person in your life whether friend or family, can have an influence on you. It shows that everyone here in this world have an important role to play. It wasn't just the characters growing up, we grew up alongside them too.

This video couldn’t have illustrated this complex narrative better. “Fruits Basket” is a tale. A tale that entails the sheer intricacies that reside within an individual's sentiment and choices that inquire, “What can I do to grow? Move forward?” It conveys the stories of characters that sought light, which was later embodied by one of the most precious protagonists through my perspective, Tohru. FRUITS BASKET allows its audience to comprehend strains and the gradual progression of not forgetting, but acknowledging what has occurred. It is a work of art that baffles rationale and portrays the lovely essence of inexplicable love.

Wow, your final line got me to sob.
Fruits Basket is honestly not my fav shoujo, but is one I remember the most. It also may have influenced me more than I realized after finally watching its completion 13 years later.
Tohru's rice ball and plum metaphor depicts how we don't realize who we really are until we connect with other people and its message is perfectly intertwined throughout the series. Some people like Akito want to say you're rotten inside and deserve to stay that way while others like Tohru just see you and accept you for who you are deep down. Tohru tries to get to know you and all aspects of you.
The characterization is what I loved most about this series. We got to know and connect with all the characters' faults and traumas, even Akito's.
This anime has an art and music composition more expressive than the manga. It heightens the emotion the manga couldn't portray enough.
While the anime couldn't show every funny and wholesome moment of the original story, it did knock it out of the park in conveying the principal moments, characterization, and themes that inspired many of its readers.
I'm so happy that this story got to shine again with a new audience and new generation. I hope it will continue to connect with people and help them move forward from their own traumas in life.

Beautiful thoughts Stephy. In terms of the anime production, they really did flush out the emotions/moods of scenes so well which was so important for a show that's really all about FEELINGS! I'm glad that last line hit you cuz I was worried it'd be too cheesy for some or they wouldn't get it (which is still probs gonna happen haha). Gonna miss this show dearly.

I have been OBSESSED with Fruits Basket since I was a kid, and I never really understood why until the remake came out. I grew up in a family full of emotional abuse, trauma, and mental health disorders. This series was like watching a weird comedic version of my life, and it subconsciously gave me hope that I can move forward past these things and change for the better. I still have a long way to go when it comes to coping and becoming my own person, but as Yuki said, “It's not that I've suddenly become stronger or that something has changed. I'm still shaking. But... We don't have to let those fears stop us. What's most important is that we try to rise above our weakness.”
To whomever may read this, may you rise above and push forward. Change is on its way, all you need to do is embrace it. I believe in you :)
“You're trying to find it. You're probably trying to find- the reason that you live- all by yourself. Because...because, in reality, there aren't any people who are born with reasons to live. I think that...that everyone has to find their reason to live. A reason to live. A reason to say that it's okay to be here. A reason for being. Everyone must find out and then decide. Maybe in a dream, or in a job, or in a person. "The reason" you find might be unclear, uncertain, and unstable. Even though you may lose it, I want to have a reason for as long as I live. I also want one. And then, if it's possible, I want to find it in somebody's heart. I want to be able to live for someone. I hope that someday, someone would tell me, 'You can think of it that way.' At times I want to give up, but I try my best. That's why...that's why it's okay, for sure, to be shameless. Because if you lead a bold life, someday you might meet someone with whom you'll want to eat takoyaki together.”

God. The way you put it all made it hit so hard. I've loved Fruits Basket since I was in middle school 13-14 years ago. When I was introduced to it by my friends. I'll never truly leave these characters behind. Not when they are such an important part of the person I've become today. Of the person I still aspire to be. There's never been another series, in any type of media, where I've come out the other side feeling like I was a better person for experiencing it. And, so long as I was willing to try, that there was so much more room for me to grow.

I first discovered Fruits Basket eight years ago right as my grandfather died and my family moved to a new place. Now I’m a young adult who is going to finish school this year and has to figure out what I’ll do with my life afterwards.
Fruits Basket is such a raw, beautiful story that handles such hard topics so well. I love it for many reasons, but the most important one is this. It shows that sometimes, all you need to help people out of a bad situation, is just show them that you care about them. That you accept them for who they are, and that you’re there for them.
If I ever meet someone who has or is going through something like the Somas had to go through, I hope that I can help them like Tohru did. I think the world would be a much better place if we had more Tohrus in it.

For me Furuba was a turning point of my life. I've read it when it was being published (so many years ago) and I was a teenager.
You dont know how many phrases of this masterpiece helped me along the way. When I felt sad, when I was unsure.... I just needed to re-read the manga to feel myself better (Shigure's analogy about washing the clothes you have near first as a way to confront your life problems... 100% gold)
About favourite characters... among the 3 I would say Tohru. I love Kyo and Yuki (to the point that a part of my nickname comes from them Kyu-> KYo+YUki) but there's not other character in all the manga/anime I know like her. We all need someone like Tohru in our lives.
Among the zodiac Momiji hands down. He's the most mature, with one of the cruelest past, and he keeps going on. You talk about Yuki, but Momiji never lost his smile. He was rejected, abandoned, left alone (x2), and he kept smiling. The way he deals with Akito (before and after THAT moment), his feelings for Tohru, towards Kyo (in the manga it's even better because the focus more on how all despise the cat, and even then Momiji wants Kyo to no give up) is inspiring.

It's ironic, because the last main theme of the show is that all the people you love might move on, and it's important to accept that and just cherish it for what it is. I've said this before, but I don't think there will ever be an anime quite like Fruits Basket. I've watched other anime that are labeled as shoujo, and while they have been very enjoyable and fun, most of them haven't stuck with me emotionally like Fruits Basket has. Some have come close, like Kamisama Kiss, but even those few shoujos can't hold a candle to Fruits Basket. I dare say Fruits Basket has even outdone a lot of shonen anime I've seen.
    But that's just my opinion.

Thats the thing! Shojo is so underrated!! Most people thing is just for woman with romance and blah blah blah but there are such great gems that u dont get in other anime genres. Actually, Yuki is my favourite character of all time. I just relate to him in so many ways growing up and he had some of the best lines that I remember by. Sadly, the anime did cut some of the lines that really resonated with me, but hopefully they could have some kind of Yuki OVA, just like how they're having Kyoko and Katsuya's story next year (which is actually my second favourite part in Fruits Basket just after Yuki's backstory)

god hearing you tear up about how you dont leave these characters really got to me. i never did either since i read and experienced it when i was younger. i used to be embarrassed this was my first proper anime bc it does seem silly to put so much emotional connection and heart into it but it really did shape me into the person i am. experiencing everything again with the new anime just showed its filled with people with flaws trying desperately to live and its fucking really hard to do it even without a curse. because at the core its real struggles of people having to deal with cruelty, pain, and grief and trying to understand why. everyone proved they were capable of change even at their cruelest lowest scariest points and just you can live, you can do it. its so scary but yeah. thank you so much for this video i love people discovering this show and realizing how lovable this characters are.

Thank you. Lots of people watch this anime but today you showed me something I've met knowone else show me before-- You UNDERSTOOD this anime. And not just in a sense of 'oh I understood the plot' but you understood the deep emotional meaning of this show. U felt the mental power this anime has and rly explained it.
When you said that It wasent about the plot but the characters- i knew you REALLY listened and felt this show- because your right. It wasent about what they done that day- or which animal they turned into- or if they turned into an animal at all- It was about how the characters developed. Each character was so different yet impossble to not be interested in. They each possesed there own persnalities and stuggles. Some worse than others yet each possesing there own raw emotion and pain. And thats why it diddent matter what the characters done: it only mattered that they where there.
This show changed the way I look at people, problems and life itself. So thank you. Thank you so much because you brought light to what makes Fruits Basket beautifull.

Fruits basket was the first manga I've ever read and I was super young when I read it. There was parts I didn't understand fully but I felt. The scene where kyo's dad holds him up in the air and says "From now on, you'll have to breathe the air of higher places." I grew up with a single parent household and reading that made something click in my brain. A deep feeling of understanding of my mom and why she worked so hard for my brother and I. This manga has shaped me as a person and my understanding of love. It taught me that love is complex but beautiful. It comes in all shapes and sizes. All colors and ways. It taught me that change is ok. Change is natural and scary. But good. Even when you have bad change. Even if you lose something or someone you love, even when it feels like there is no hope and that nothing will get better. Even in our darkest moments its ok. You'll be ok. It taught me that everything ends eventually. And that's such a scary thought but that's what makes it beautiful. If everything was forever then we wouldn't understand how beautiful and precious life is. We wouldn't understand the space and magnitude that the people we love hold in our hearts and mind. I have a space on my shelf of this story, the whole collection, and it'll remain there until it gets passed on. I hope everyone gets a chance to read this manga and learn the lesson of life and love and changing that it holds.

i watched the og anime in 2004 ( i was 10) and while growing up in a screwed up family, Fruits Basket was the anime that kept me sane, comforts me. i rewatched 26 episodes anually . i really mean it, anually. Up until i was 14 years old, had my own laptop and i found out about the manga with 136 chapters, it became my holy grail. I learned a lot from all char's backstories, even Tohru. Everything made sense. I guess Fruits Basket is like a therapy for us the broken ones. Fruits Basket 2019 finally gave me the satisfaction that i longed from since 10. Fruits basket change how i view people around me and the way i live my life. I have no shame of saying Honda Tohru is my role model. I will always go back to Fruits Basket, anytime , anywhere

I just finished it and somehow i feel heavier yet lighter after watching this anime with all these beautiful flawed characters deal with life the best way to move forward , to try harder. Often in the shadows of our own pain and trauma we miss out on such little yet wonderful moments in life we take granted for. The show made me feel grateful for my own cheerful childhood and and stupid fun school memories... i don't want to let go of these characters yet.. the background score is also 10/10 😭🥲 tohru honda may seem as a stereotypical clutz character but she was the most courageous one, always being the first one to extend her friendship isn't easy at all. Listening to others and not being judgemental is really difficult too. But she was kind always even when life wasn't kind to her. Fruits basket will remain special for me.💙

When I was growing up, I was the “rice ball” too. I was the girl who was left out because people thought I was weird. As I grew older, it manifested into me constantly trying to be nice to anyone and everyone to hopefully make people happy. My friend group has told me so many times before, “you’re so sweet and nice” or sometimes “you’re too nice!” (when I let this girl run off with my phone because i didn’t want to be mean and confront her.) I’m happy that I can make others happy, but the part about always feeling selfish is true. You never feel like you can go back. The kindness feels fake even if it isn’t anymore. I relate to Tohru so much that as I was watching the anime, I was learning all these important things along with her. What hit me the hardest is when Kyo said “It’s okay to be selfish sometimes.” Tohru and me were quite literally the same person. I’m rewatching the anime right now and I really recommend doing this. There are a lot of things I missed the first time!

This show taught me compassion through different perspectives. It taught me how to forgive abusers while still holding them accountable for their actions and standing my ground. It taught me how to process trauma in a healthy way and grow from it. This show is a masterpiece in character-driven storytelling and psychology and I would recommend it to anyone, especially people with trauma because it taught me that a great life can be waiting for me just around the corner if I put in the work to form connections.
Also for that, Yuki is my favorite character. I relate to him on a deeper level than the rest. Every time he spoke with great life and emotion in season 3 compared to his apathy/depression in season 1, I smiled from ear to ear.

The last episode brings tears to everyone's eyes not because of sadness, but because of nostalgia and the fact that we will not get any more episodes. I mean, Fruba is a legend! It's such a beautiful and life changing anime! It teaches you to appreciate every moment you have with loved one, for it can be your last, and wish them well so they may be safe. I was first introduced to this series with the original as a child by a friend. Now as an adult I've finally seen the remake, or glow up and animated version of the manga. I have to say I see this in a completely different way. For 4 years I worked for a man who was so psychologically messed up, all I can say is I think he is a narcissist, and I think this shows how you can heal from narcissist abuse and trauma. ❤ It's so beautiful, and pretty God sent, past the horoscope stuff.. 😊

I love this anime with all my heart, it’s the best of the best anime in history.
It’s such an emotional roller coaster; you cry, you laugh, you get angry, and a mix of different emotions.
I really can’t describe how much I love this anime. The soundtracks and the plot is so beautiful, heartwarming and sorrow, it makes your heart have this strong feeling of nostalgia.
This anime taught me a lot of stuff, and shows how life is.
The quotes that I can’t forget is “Goodbyes make us lonely”, “No one wants to be alone, being alone is scary”, “Leaving someone is as sad as being left” and so much more. It makes me want to cling to someone, be as kind as I can, give people a good life, be kind to them, apologise and own up for any mistake, and be there for them just like Tohru did. But of course, I’m not going to be like Tohru, I’ll be myself and do what Tohru has done.
    Just remember this quote…
“Live a life that you won’t regret in the end, even if you make mistakes along the way.”
Let’s admit this, we all made a mistake in our life at least once, they could be big mistakes, and mistakes leave us feeling guilty and feeling strong regret, that is why you apologise so it doesn’t make you feel so horrible for a long time. Apologising is hard, it can be embarrassing to admit you made a mistake, but it’s better to apologise than never apologise.
Maybe you won’t be forgiven or be with someone again, that’s why you should be careful of your actions and words, but know there will always be someone who will treasure you, just never give up hope and keep looking ahead. Know that things may not be great in life, but they will get better.
Everything will be better if you have faith, people can take everything from you, but the only thing they can’t take away is your faith.
Know to always be yourself, you are born to be yourself and to be different from other people, you are never weird, because we are all weird!
I repeat; live the best life you can, live a life you won’t regret in the end, take every opportunity you can, meet new people and treasure them, feel the beauty and sorrow in life, NEVER EVER GIVE UP ON LIFE. You cannot get back a life after giving it up, always talk it out when you feel like you want to give up, it’ll help. But, never. ever. give. up!

I went in to it last yr thinking cute, funny, wholesome anime where ppl TURN IN TO ANIMALS YES YES YES...then the darker issues were hinted at while watching and i got really curious. AND WHEN THE DARK STUFF HIT AND THE BEUTIFUL MESSAGES WERE MADE I WAS SO SHOCKED. SO FREAKING SHOCKED. IT'S LITERALLY THE PERFECT ANIME TO RECOMMEND TO SOMEONE LIKE ME. THE THEMES INTRODUCED WERE EXACTLY EXACTLY WHAT I LOVED IN OTHER SHOWS BUT PUT IN ONE SERIES. I was so scared it was gonna be cringey but it WAS REALISTIC. IT WAS ACTUALLY SO HUMAN. The trauma was realistic,believable...that's so rare.
And as someone with childhood trauma it makes complete sense that my favourite character is yuki.u have no idea how hard my mental state was triggered when Yuki's story was finally fully told, i was sobbing the hardest I had in so long and that's cuz he is such good representation.the psychological torture was done so well.their personalities actually made sense.
U worded things so beautifully...I miss the characters so much.i wish I had found show while going through high school

Fruits basket was therapeutic for me
It taught me the most important lessons of my life
    To be kind
    To be grateful
Stop complaining and strive to change myself
I don't want to sound cringey
    But...
    Fruits Basket kinda saved me.
There are a lot of things I have done for which I won't be able to forgive myself. The deeply engraved guilt haunts me, even today.
Fruits Basket was a warm hug... A shoulder where I could keep my head and cry
A voice that told me... It's okay, Daijobudayo

loved this video, but one little thing! Fruits Basket IS a shoujo, and that's not a bad thing. Shoujo is just a demographic, that demographic being teen girls. and whether you mean it this way or not, when you say "Fruits Basket isn't a shoujo" that's basically saying that it being a shoujo is a bad thing, that shoujo isn't just as worthy of a demographic as, say, shounen, or seinen. i'm sure you didn't mean it that way at all, but yes Fruits Basket is a shoujo, even if you had a shounen that got really deep, i'm sure you wouldn't say it wasn't a shounen lol

    • @westsideotaku1555
      @westsideotaku1555  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You are correct. The phrasing I was getting at here is "I don't feel like it's a typical so called 'shoujo' ". I said the same thing about My Hero Academia for it's first 2 season where it didn't feel like a Shonen to me. Sometimes I come across things that I will absolutely in strictly a technical sense call them what they are, but just express how it feels like something else entirely "to me".
Glad you loved the vid Francesca ^_^ Seriously had lots of trouble expressing how I feel about this show and still do.

When I was collecting DVD's from Funimation they gave a demo DVD either with my Yu Yu Hakusho or DBZ order of Fruits Basket and it was all over for me. I loved it from the first episode and kept collectioning it when it officially got released. My mother died back in 2009 and when Momiji gave that speech to Tohru during the first year of the anniversary of her mother's death and it got me good. I then went on to collect the manga when I found out manga existed and Fruits Basket became my first manga collection I completed. I own the original series, origianal English mnaga volumes from Tokoyo Pop, The collector editions from Yen, the current seasons as they came out, etc..
It's a digital mini arc called the Three Musketeers featuring Hatori, Shigure, and Ayame. Then a Sequel called Fruits Basket Another that is 3 volumes , but the original cast are only mentioned and not shown nonetheless I still enjoyed it.

I heavily recommend reading the manga. Season 1 and 2 are pretty faithful, but the anime had to cut a LOT of story for season 3, which made a lot of manga readers furious and disappointed, since that's where the deepest, rawest, most interesting things happen.
If you don't want to read the entirety of the manga you can check from chapter 90 (Kyoko's backstory) and onward.

From chapter 107, the anime team really rearranged things, and not for the better when it comes to characters like Tohru, Kyo, Akito. :/

My favorite character is definitely Momiji. At first, he’s introduced as more or less a comedic relief character that’s also an absolute sweet heart of a kid. As the show goes on, you see that like Tohru, he’s someone that has dealt with so much trauma and still find a way to smile. He’s also one of the most emotionally mature characters I’ve ever seen in anime. He’s always making sure his family is okay and always willing to step in and help someone out, even at his own expense.
