The 2001 version is only good for nostalgia but I personally think the 2019 reboot is superior. You have more understanding of the characters' perspectives, better artwork and better storyline which made it more easier to understand why its titled the way it is. But I'm happy that most of the original characters have their original voice actors back. And Momiji's English voice sounds much cuter in the new version.
I think both have their great points but I can definitely see what you mean when you talk about the remake. I love them both dearly ^^

@@InuYashaboy1992 really? the 2001 version dragged episodes, in no way was it rushed. it just had a different sequence of events slightly. for example, in the 2001 version they dedicated an enitre episode to tohru being left alone on new years whereas in the 2019 version it was kind of just half an episode.
@@InuYashaboy1992yes! I love a good slow burn it allows for so many more good character moments and new developments. I absolutely adore the remake, I like to think it's how they would've liked to do the show back then if they had the means.
Nothing to do with nostalgia,if you compare the two up to the point the 2001 ended. 2001 was miles better. 2019 was tone deaf in comparison. 2019s value is in the continued story content but they did not do it better for the comparable parts. ESPECIALLY THE DUB. 2019 dub is tone deaf.
The original just made up some stuff because the manga wasn’t complete yet. But I’m excited to see how this remake is, considering it will most likely include actual information from the manga. So far, I recommend this anime because it’s really good.

fkfirjfrke. i just found out that they remade it in april, and i watched the first 12 episodes in one sitting after rewatching the original. im so bambo0zled. i can't help but cry after realizing how far the animation's come and how it affects the story on a whole new level with just quality/detail. one thing i do miss is the soundtrack and theme song of the original. it was short and sweet while giving that edgy i-will-make-you-cry vibe.

I agree. The only thing that can't beat the 2001 ver is definitely the soundtrack, theme song and also the storytelling style. I have the DVD with the behind the scenes extras (thank God for subs coz that time I still didn't know Japanese lol). So in the behind the scenes extra, even the director of the 2001 original show said that from the very beginning, although their budget for the show is not that much, they had planned and still want to deliver and touch audience and readers who had read the original work with such meaningful and touching storytelling style that involved the audience's emotion through the voice acting and music to make up for the lack of animation. I do feel the delivery of the storytelling kind of lacking tbh for the remake ver, coz when I watch the first 3 ep of the remake, it kinda feels bland, so I do feel a little somewhat disappointed, and kinda dropped it for awhile.
The 2019 version is awesome ... I cried and laughed at every episode. I watched the 2001 version about 6 years ago and it just didn't spark the same deep feelings and it didn't impress me at all ... But the reboot is freaking *AMAZING*

I'm amazed that there are people out there who claim to 'hate' the new art style. So what if it doesn't look like the manga? It's new and looks amazing and I for one appreciate improvements. Also, Natsuki Takaya specifically requested for the animators in this adaptation to NOT make it look the same as her art, as she considers her art to be dated and simple.
I have always loved comparison videos and to see all the differences in the two iterations of my favorite anime side by side is almost magical. I can't wait to see more of what you upload. (Ps, Yes Kyo is best boy)

I love the remake, but one thing i think they missed the mark on is the soundtrack. The originals music, not just the start and ending but all of the different background tracks they had, were SO good and fit the series so well. I just can't make that same connection to the start and end songs and the background music. Maybe it's cause I'm a sucker for good music but the 2019 soundtrack sounds bland to me personally, and a bit generic. That's just me tho.

I haven't watched the 2001 version, but I listened to the opening and fell in love with it. It's a song full of emotion with beautiful lyrics. Although I love the remake, I admit that the openings there sound more generic.
Funnily enough, the 2001 version is actually more accurate to the style that the author initially has in the first few volumes, before the mangaka developed the style she has today.
Yes it is but the ending of the anime is made up because the manga is still incomplete so if you are looking for an anime that is loyal to the manga I would recommend the newest version of fruit basket.

They updated the art to look like the the manga’s final art style. The 2001 was more in the manga’s early style.

I was disappointed when I watched the OG a few years ago because the story felt incomplete. I loved the comedy but this remake really got me invested in the storyline now. Please continue to do more of each episode if you can ~

I just can't, I love 2001 animation. Even if it doesn't have a big budget it was made with love and care.
And something a lot of details is not so good, you do not concentrate on the most important staff, like you would've do in your real life, especially if you're remembering your past.
Yeah but know the the mangaka of fruits basket wasn't a big fan of the 2001 anime and she is closely following and contributing to the 2019 adaptation so you should give it a try since the author herself wanted this newer adaptation

I'm glad they are finishing the story despite the first one had not a lot to go by but somehow ended up sticking out more for me, a good combination of humor and feel compared to the new. The newer one certainly gets down to business more and explain all the first could not, while the first one just worked with what it had and added a lot of funnier moments that gave life to it by comparison.
Yes this is the perfect remake no matter what everyone says for me is so beautiful and so loyal to the manga :') I'm here drowning in videos because I am so excited for season three and is so far away that I'm trying to heal my depression

i kinda prefered the old art style and panning and stuff, a lot of the film techniques used now are real generic & i would go so far as to say sometimes tone isnt as good as a result either (might just be because 2000's anime were exagerrated as heck tho haha) (i do like the new improvements to backgrounds tho !!! ) i also feel like the character designs aren't as special anymore though :'((

I'm finally watching the new version now without knowing it was a remake. At first I was like " wow, this graphic is good. I don't remember it being this good" and then I watched episode 2 and realized the opening theme was different. Now I'm here!
I do miss Tohru”s blue eyes but other than that it’s amazing!

Thanks for making this comparison video and for the interesting evaluation & discussion of the two versions of this great anime. I loved the OG as well as the manga and I can remember wishing years ago that a second season was going to be made.
Today I know that the main reason season 2 never eventuated was bc the production company deviated too much from the manga (esp toward the end of the anime) and the mangaka decided a follow-up season wouldn't be a true adaptation of the ''Fruits Basket'' story that she really wanted to show to and share with others.
She's been waiting a long time for this re-Boot and I hope that both old and new fans can give it a go because as you point out the story is so relatable, and although I think that later it becomes somewhat dark, it's a journey which I'm sure will remain close to many viewers' hearts.
...and YES! please make more of these videos, it'll be great to see the many future changes. (I'm not going to rewatch the original so that I get to enjoy what I may have forgotten each new episode). Hang in there man and I look forward to more videos whenever you're feeling up to it :D

The original was better. I don't get why people say the new one is more like the manga when it's not. I read the manga and the original isn't exactly like it but it captures the essence of it. It balances being funny and dark well. The music is way more superior too. The new one just seems like its made up of Tohru and Kyo's story. Like, its all about Kyo. The original anime gives every character an identity. It's only weakness is the ending and some things missing from the book. But it was more entertaining to me.

Honestly, as much as I love details, the delivery of punch lines and overall expression from pretty much ALL characters except Kyon , Haru, and Tori, SUCKS. Most notably on Shigure’s behavior 😭, which I feel rob’s us from the magic that mark the anime for me. I still prefer the old version 🤷🏻♀️
My only hope, is that at least with this new version, they hopefully do animate the WHOLE STORY. Hopefully... even if doesn’t have those other little things I love ;-;

I wanted to rewatch this the other day and started watching the remake randomly and it felt very different but I still felt so at home even being a remake. It's so amazingly beautiful, I think it's literally what nostalgia makes us feel like the first version was like and then seeing this is like the reality check 😭😂

Love the remake. They justified the characters' feelings, actions and backstory more. It gives us the depth that were kinda lacking from the original. But I love both as I got to watch the original version as well and it's very beautiful. But the remake is really amazing, too ❤️😍
The only thing about the 2019 remake that I can say that 2001 did better was making some scenes really pop and the change from the manga (basically the anime only scenes, where tohru actually cleaned the kitchen, where kagura made a mess in the kitchen and in the laundry room, and they made things seem a bit more interesting( I HAVEN'T READ THE MANGA, IM ONLY BASING IT OFF OF THE 2019 VERSION CUZ THEY SAID IT FOLLOWS CLOSE TO THE MANGA) and also the English translation was done better because it was alot funnier and well done, shigure was much funnier, the 2019 version does amazing by again following close to the manga, expanding things we see, more roads and more details and even the hat (I have no idea what's that for so don't SPOIL) also 1 other thing I noticed while watching is pacing, idk if it's a bit rushed cuz season 1 was already done and people already know about the beginning but they skipped some things that the original had did...Studio Dean probably changed some things to make it seem interesting, the 2019 version is just amazing and I can't wait to more, I'm not trying to sound biased, just giving my opinions, the 2019 version adds detail and it's more I guess "true" but still, all I can see is everyone saying "OMg ThE 2019 VeRSioN iS MUch beTter" lmao well the 2001 is all of OUR CHILDHOODS SO.

Having only watched the 2001 version and not having read the manga, this was a great intro video. I loved the humor and dub of the first one and after randomly stumbling on the 2nd season of the remake I really found it jarring, but I think after this I'll go back to the first 2019 season and give it a try.
I definitely love fruits basket. In some ways I can relate to yuki and his shyness and not getting close to people and is trying to work towards that.
I feel like everyone watching the remake is 1. not watching the Japanese audio version. (so thank you for watching it!) 2. Hasn't read the manga. Yes it is more accurate to the manga, page by page... but the first one is HILARIOUS, the voice actors are beautiful and doesn't actually feel like acting. I really think the voice acting in 2019 puts me off so much. Momiji clearly sounds like a girl, every man has a deep voice (which fits with 2019 aesthetic I guess) but that really doesn't work for Yuki. He has a complex over his femininity and taking that away seems silly. And like you said this remake really is for past viewers and manga readers with lots of easter eggs. The art is freaking beautiful but sometimes the lack of details in 2001 (felt to me like...) it was purposeful. Not knowing what the house looked like during the conversation with her mum used to make me think she thought about this moment a lot and even though she hasn't forgotten what's more important was the conversation and literally just her mum. Throughout the manga it is well known that tohru is single minded about her mother, to the point that when she starts to fall in love she feels guilty - I think that the 2001 one really worked, and was sad to learn it wasn't what the mangaka wanted
Edit: They fixed some plot details but also messed some up. In the school scene in episode 2 or 3 Kyo turns into a cat and his beads are on the floor. That's completely wrong, although they're not always drawn in they're meant to be magical, and if taken off... well...
This is 11 months later but I do think its important for anyone else that comes across this. The author never wanted a female voice actor for Yuki, she begged, begged, and eventually cried when they refused to listen to her. Men can have a feminine, or princess-like, aura without having a high pitched voice. It wasn't necessarily until I met someone like that in-person that I truly grasped what Yuki would be like IRL. But I can't imagine someone representing my friend with a female voice, it just feels so wrong. That's how I think the author felt about Yuki.
@@xxhuntressx I didn't say that Yuki should've had a female actor. On the contrary I mentioned Momijis female voice acting not sitting right with me. both yuki and kyos voice actors (at least when it came out) didn't really tap into the humour as well as the first furuba. Maybe that's down to writing as well? You can still have a feminine sounding male voice actor. Again, he had complexes about his femininity and I don't see that in this version as he sounds and comes across stereotypically masculine. Thats just my impression anyway 🙂
I hope there's a remake for Gakuen Alice too 😭😭😭 Wanna see an animated version of the dark side of their alices just like in the Manga 😭😭😭

Thank you for this! I have never watched the older version but just seeing your analyses, makes it clear that the bigger budget HELPED a lot. I don't think I will watch FB1.0 as I find the drawings quite 'harsh' (if that's the right word) and the characters appear flat. Am rewatching season 1 of FB2.0 and trying not to break down in tears every few episodes. Also new to anime and love love FB and Demon Slayer!
I feel like the 2019 reboot is a simplified version of 2001 for the comparable parts in practically every way.
The only thing I do not like about the remake is the pace. I find it extremely slow though I appreciate it stays true to the manga I find some episodes could of been condensed. Some episodes I feel what was the point or this? And I forget what is driving the plot. While the 2009 adaptation every episode was heartfelt.
I love them both, but watching the reboot makes Yuki in the original art work looks scary.

Just wanted to say that firstly, your English is great! Also, I know exactly what you mean about the different background music in FB2019 making it feel like something is 'missing' compared to the 2001 version with its beautiful, melancholic soundtrack. Sadly, Copyright laws would have meant they had to replace all the tunes for the 2019 series. Hopefully though, even though it may take a while (and especially as there will be more than the 1 season, yay!!) we will slowly grow used to making new associations in our minds, between the characters and the different music :)
After now watching 4 episodes of the 2019 version, I can honestly say that although I miss the old music during emotional moments, I have come to really adore the new ED music (plus I love Yuki smiling at Tohru at the end!) and I'm also growing to like the OP too. What do you think of the new Opening and Ending (without comparing them to 2001s)??

All the reasons that’s make me disappointed in FB2019 because when i was young I have a good memory from FB2001 such as Background song opening song ending song or everything about the song gave a good imagine to me

Heard about the remake and i immediately became happy knowing a remake of one of my favorite animes is coming out i thought of it as a similar style but newer and smother but as i saw it i got my hopes and illusions of this anime way to high
I got sad and a little angry and knowing some of the voice actors where not going to be the same ones it just got added and i decided i wasn't going to watch it at all
But i have become curious and well started looking \ finding videos about the comparisons of the original to the remake
I saw yours and clicked and from watching all of it from the beginning to the end i can say is
I will give this remake a chance because i haven't known how much of production took in, details and such improved it might not sound or look the same it is still the same thouru (sorry I spelled her name wrong) and the characters involved and part of the zodiac
Its the same story with minor changes by adding or removing some parts but still creates the story we love with these characters

i absolutely loved the 2001 original and was so excited to watch the 2019 remake, but after about five episodes i lost interest.
it's strange because so many of the scenes are an exact remake, yet they somehow lacked the humor and charm the original had

however, i am glad new viewers get to experience the anime. it's absolutely one of my favorites and tohru's character is so inspiring to me, even as an adult. we could all use a tohru in our lives :*)
Natsuki takaya didn't want her art style replicated because when she was drawing the manga, she had issues with her dominant hand and as a result, made a lot of mistakes in her art. Also the series wasn't meant to be too comedic. It was meant to be dramatic and heart warming, like a Mexican telenovela. The 2001 anime sucks given the original source material(the manga) which makes the remake the better option.
I can’t wait for the next season and seeing the rest of the manga animated for the first time!
i think im going to watch this again because i havent finish it in the first place… i remember watching this on tv when i was 12 years old. (i am 25 years old now ) internet was not so available at my place at that time… after years i almost forgot this anime exist… i guess its the time for me to watch it
I wanted to point out one detail with yuki giving her mother's pictures back vs it already being there.
It felt like a continuity error with it js being there when she woke up. Make me think, did Yuki went to the site, dig it up, went back to the house to properly place it nicely next to her, went BACK to the site to gather the rest of ther stuff, then travel back to the house in the morning?
Doesnt make that much sense, im glad they changed that
One thing I did prefer in the 2001 adaptation is that tohru's picture frame was already returned to her upon waking up. In the manga and reboot, yuki coincidentally just happened to return (did he get any sleep? Or was he all up that night?). I feel that the og anime made a more plausible change. In fact, there are a few aspects of the of anime that I do prefer (like the hot springs scene where tohru places her picture frame in a sealable bag instead of mounting it on a pillow). Other than that, the reboot is looking great.
The original anime's director can do dark stuff, but he mostly does comedies. And he was stuck with a tiny budget: cheap, but efficient animation & brand new, low cost voice actors.
Now they need to remake School Rumble to complete the nostalgia feels
They did a good job with episode 1 because it made you feel nostalgic but man I do miss the 2001 vibes becuz of the soundtrack.
Right now after i watch the remake, the one that i miss the most is opening song...but other than that, remake have delivered very well

I watched the remake first not even knowing it was a remake and then tried to watch the original. I can appreciate the 2001 version for what it stood for; the fact that anime was still relatively new, however, I only made it to episode 14 of the original before I decided to ditch the whole thing. Fruits basket has become my new favorite anime but only the 2019 version. The 2001 version is only special because of the nostalgia it provides for those who were hip to anime back then.

And the hat is already there since episode 1. I'm honestly loving it so far. I've watched the original show and read the whole manga and even though I only watched it four years ago, it really does feel like nostalgia. And Kyo!!

For me I personally like the 2001 original but I like the 2019 slightly better just because it gives more detail in character into the characters🤍

Can't believe that FB came out almost 20 years ago even if I picked it up in 2005. Very excited for the remake. I couldn't stand the anime. The manga is very deep and the style is much better than the anime.
