REVIEW: Handheld, Manual Ice Shaver (by Victoria)

  • I wanted an ice shaver that was made out of metal, non-electric, and takes up little space. The closest thing I could find were the Kakigori Cast Iron ice shavers but they cost hundreds of dollars and are huge. So when I looked up vintage ice shavers and the small Gem Ice Shavers from the 1900’s popped up, I was really excited, but found little information about them (so I made this video!)
    My only gripe about this ice shaver is that it takes too long to make a decent amount of shaved ice. The time isn't really an issue, but the shaved ice melting is! I placed my shaved ice in the freezer and was able to break it up using my plastic Oxo Ice Scoop.
    Next time, I’d use a bigger block of ice. The block of ice I used melted too quickly making it harder to shave, so I think a bigger block would be better.

    Cool! Thanks for showing this. Had to show my wife how it works. I remember this buying halo halo in the Philippines when I was a kid. We're looking to get one. Cheers!

      Welcome! I also bought this because I wanted to make Halo Halo for my daughter-- which she didn't want like. :( But she did like the scoop of strawberry ice cream and evaporated milk she got with it.
      I used a bigger block of ice and freezing hot water and I got shaved ice a lot faster. I definitely recommend! Good luck with whatever you choose!

    I have an original one that my grandfather had. He owned a movie theater along with a snowball stand inside, I don’t know how much he used it I just remember the snowball machine he used. He had the best in town. The old Star Theater here in Bay St. Louis, MS.
    His chocolate snowballs were phenomenal.

    Very cool! How did you make the strawberry sauce? I’m trying to avoid artificial colors from the store-bought sauces/juices that have food coloring in it. Thank you!

    • @XoletteLife
      @XoletteLife  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@WholePlantFoodForLife Oh, the strawberry sauce is easy. In a food processor or blender, blend strawberries, water, sugar. Water helps make it saucy, and sugar makes it sweeter so those two amounts are up to you! I just had enough water to get the blender going and a few spoonfuls of sugar. Good luck!

    I have found myself in the partially hidden niche of TH-cam where you go if you need to learn about something that isn't science or math that people make fun. I also now know more about the ice shaver we've had for years but never used until now. 😂

    • @XoletteLife
      @XoletteLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's great! I think TH-cam is great when you need to learn something; it's one of the reasons I post-- I like to help others looking for answers and I like when I'm looking for answers and find it on TH-cam! I hope you make some shaved ice treats for your family soon! :) I did find that freezing half hot, half lukewarm mixture of water did make it easier to shave!

    • @XoletteLife
      @XoletteLife  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I still have it and not sure if it could ever break really, other than maybe having to replace the blade? I think it's worth buying if you want a ice shaver that will last forever. In this video I say it took me a long time to shave the ice, but with a bigger block of ice it's faster. Also, the tip of using half room temp water/half hot water to make your ice block seemed to work better then just freezing room temp water (but I'd have to do both blocks side by side to know for sure!)

      That makes sense, but my husband told me it was so hard to adjust, that I'll just have to cross my fingers and hope that no water gets stuck under the blade! :) It's good to hear from you!

      @Schmunzel57 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@XoletteLife Hello Xolette.
      Now I see the curve in the edge. That is bad. The other way around would still be better. I would resharpen it. Normally the elongated hole is in the blade not the body; at least for woodworking planes.
      If you don’t need tiny shaves- an easy way to set the dept of a plain iron is to place the body on a veneer or paper(stack) of the wanted thickness. Pressing down the body and the blade down onto the tabletop and than fasten the blade.
      I saw some teaching attempt with the letter openers some videos ago. Are they to light?

    • @XoletteLife
      @XoletteLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Schmunzel57 Jon said we might need a reshape the blade too and some of the Amazon reviews mentioned that. That's a good tip about the stack of papers! Oh yeah, the letter openers with my daughter. When I threw them, I thought, this would probably be too light for her and opted for the heavier small knives I have. But, it didn't matter because all she wants to throw are those ninja stars (hira shuriken)!

    • @Schmunzel57
      @Schmunzel57 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@XoletteLife You must be so glad to do that. Here ninja stars are banned by law (Someone hat the Idea some kid could poke an eye out, that is to dangerous to be sold to kids- ban them totally!) Now it is a crime to own one!! Those how want to throw thinks like that have to use circular saw blades- totally more save HAHA.
      Have you seen Jörg Sprave on his Slingshot canal? th-cam.com/users/JoergSprave
      He is even inventing weapons that are legal in Germany and selling them.
      I have not enough money to leave Germany. Maybe I can seek asylum in Switzerland or the US , if the go on with there politic there will nothing left of Germany - or a civil war.
      I found two more letter openers of that kind (same forging, different decoration).
      Do you want them?

    • @XoletteLife
      @XoletteLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Schmunzel57 I have a video on ninja stars, and I kind of agree that they may be dangerous for kids-- but only the lightweight ones. They can travel really far and hard to control. But the ones from sharp blades are heavy, not sharp, and are easy to control, so I love those for my daughter! I agree though, that some laws don't make sense-- made by people that don't understand the weapon. I've seen Jorge's channel. He's so enthusiastic! I like how he makes his own weapons. I'm good so far with the two letter openers you've given me, but thank you for the offer!
