Waves still has top notch plugins it’s just the business model. I had to pay to update all my plugs when I switched to my M1 Mac and just this week I got another reminder that one of my plugs is about to expire lol. That being said I love the stuff from Soundtoys, Fabfilter, Cable Guys, Izotope and Native Instruments as well. Plenty of companies are doing phenomenal work!

I think what we're seeing is a sort of generational rift forming. If you started out 20+ years ago you might have been using Cubase or Cakewalk or maybe Pro Tools | 24. Whatever your studio ran it did seem Waves were everywhere. Now I was just a kid then playing around with MIDI in Cubase at the time but Cubase and Waves seemed pretty ubiquitous as they were easy to find and had lots of peers to connect to. 2002 rolls around and Pro Tools | HD comes out. Quickly becomes the industry standard over the next few years. Native Instruments starts picking up steam around this time. A decade later and Mac + Pro Tools + Waves + Komplete seemed to be the standard.
Nowadays PCs are so powerful you don't need Mac, you don't need fancy external DSP processing, you don't need Pro Tools. Many studios are still using it, but there are new studios coming online all the time using Cubase or Studio One. There are also tons of options for plugins these days and I think we'll see less and less use over the years of these older collections as more new studio owners, engineers and producers get their starts. With TH-cam and social media it's so easy to go out and check out whatever plugins you might be interested in before even downloading a demo. Someone getting their start and going to TH-cam to look at plugin reviews is going to get fed all the latest stuff. I think over time we'll see less Pro Tools, less Waves and less NI being used. Some new collections might take their places as standards over time or we'll just start seeing everyone use what they feel like and have come up with better solutions for bringing your plugins with you to someone else's studio.

Love that Waves C4 multiband compressor and SSL4000 compressor. RBass, Doubler, RChannel, and RVox are SWEET too as well as that linear phase eq and linear phase multiband compressor. And yes, the L1 and L2 limiters have their place too.
With that said, Fabfilter is no joke, as others here have already mentioned.

I had a nice collection of waves plugs. Had them for years. I was tempted to buy a new plug-in and did so. Lo and behold, all my version 9 plugins were now DISABLED and I haven’t been able to use them since!!!! So all because I wanted to jump on a version 12 plug-in, I lost all my version 9 plugins. They want me to pay them more money for what I already owned and worked fine, til I got the version 12 plug-in. Tried to delete the version 12 plug-in and get my version 9 back…NOPE.

The new SSL plugins give you that real feel and I love them!

@@verbone I picked up the whole SSL bundle and use it on everything from Gospel music to Hip-Hop they sound good. Using the SSL 4K B channel strip is basically like using a 4K console and you can mimic those sounds thick analogue sounds from your in the box rig. I used the cracked stuff back in the day until 2017. I have the legit plug-ins now I feel like my mixes are better. I have the SSL Eq and Comp from Waves which is my main stuff I use in conjunction of using other plugins. I have the SSL channel from the actual SSL and their compressor but I end up running the Waves ones instead.

Brainworx is superseding Waves for channel strip emulation (ssln4000E and Neve). Sometimes tho I find myself using H-comp tho. I like waves for their rhodes vst... got it as a freebie for buying a bunch of stuff... it's tasty.

I use a lot of waves , but I also use a shitload of UAD plugins. Nowadays I don't wanna eq anything unless its with Fabfilter Pro Q3 lol. I think it depends on your setup. I'm running an Apollo Twin with a octo satellite, and I own all of the plugins, so I tend to use more UAD stuff than others. Gotta justify my spending habits lol

Remember TC Native Bundle? Around the turn of the millennia (when the dinosaurs still walked the DAW-world) they were considered the real competition for the Waves Bundle! TC:s plugins were seen as really good for Reverbs and Equalizers. Waves were better for compressors/maximisers/limiters.
TC also made a great vst-instrument with Mercury-1. One of the first somewhat "real" analog sounding softsynths.

Waves is cheap now but that up date plan is where their money is coming from. And the market is over saturated and the engineers are now getting into the game being exclusive, either with their own plug-ins or there teaming up with a company that’s just killing it. (So no) but I still use waves for certain stuff not like I use to.

It's just so much out here now. Waves is definitely studio top of the line sound wise but it's just MAADD alternatives now.

Back in the day waves was really one of the original emulation makers for hardware plugins. However, now there are tons of companies with the tech to do emulation so they are less of a player, but still offer some great sounding plugins. I don't like the pricing of their update plans... it's like paying for nothing as they rarely do update anything other than change the version numbers.

Waves Definitely Has The Best Basic Compressor PlugIn's, They're Easy To Use And Has A Beefy Touch To Them and I Like CR8 Sampler. I Think UVI 's Are The Most Underrated, They Have A Few Must Have's. Izotope's Are The Best Once You Learn Them, Especially Its AI's Ones, Neutron 4 and Ozone 10... Those Are In Most Everyone's Master's These Days, Then RX, It's Legendary! The Heist Of All Sound Platforms 🤣Oh, Does Melodyne Count as A Plugin?... But To Me Personally, Air Flavor Pro From Akai Is The PLUGIN Of The YEAR!
