Bach - Toccata in E minor BWV 914 - Jacobs | Netherlands Bach Society

- The Toccata in E minor, performed by Bart Jacobs for All of Bach, ends with a brilliant fugue, which bears a strong resemblance to an anonymous Italian piece. Although Bach often arranged Italian concertos and also borrowed the occasional fugue theme from the Italians, he never adopted a whole fugue. But maybe it was the other way around and the anonymous Italian copied the fugue from Bach, or both composers based their piece on a lost original. We will probably never know for certain. Incidentally, Bach’s version of the fugue is ‘better’, but that is hardly surprising from the world champion fugue writer.

- What a funny little piano!

- GET OUT!
I've been asked (more than once) why I have a small piano next to my big piano. Eyes tend to glaze over when you start explaining harpsichords to certain people ...
@@paulslaughter2366 little do they know that these 'small pianos' have a very charming sound!
My question is gonna be: How did you manage to buy this thing?
This is absolutely my favorite piece of music. Ever.
me every time i discover a new bach piece
That fugue is monumental.
Yes, monumental.
Can't disagree, 1 year later and still true
@@prss1563300 years later and still true!!
the instrument is pure beauty! Low register gives me goosebumps
By far, my favorite of all Bach toccatas: synthetic, brief, emotional and counterpunctually transparent. Thanks 👍🏼.
Bach the supreme composer of the universe
After the great Mozart
@@cavaliereangelo2763 lol after what? Mozart wouldn't exist like it does now if Bach wouldn't pushed music to its next level.
You either are crazy or do not understand a pipe of music. You can't offend anyone people like that. CRAZY!!! ¡!!!!!!!!????!!!!
I will not talk to you anymore but you are incompetent
Cavaliere Angelo Thanks for not offending by calling me "Crazy" 😂
I can never get enough of this wonderful rendition of BWV 914, hearing it countless times for the last days. Thank you, Mr.Jacobs, for your thoughtful and gripping interpretation! Thank you, AllOfBach team, for the excellent audio and video quality, as usual!
What a delight!
This Toccata is out of this world, especially 4:00
How alive and relevant Bach feels even today! Thank you Nethlands Bach Society.
Enthralling performance of a captivating piece by a fascinating composer!
Fantastic sound of harpsichord!
Lovely performance!
Cheers!
The fugue is perhaps one of Bach’s most catchy works.
The farm setting, the beautiful music. I couldn't ask for anything more but to be there! Thank you All of Bach
Living the dream
Thank you so much for this moment of sheer magic.
Yay, awesome and bravo! What a fantastic piece of music and well played!!
I Had the opportunity to study and eventually record this piece on the piano . Well, the harpsichord most faithfully captures the atmosphere of Bach . Bach's music makes us discover life in its various aspects . You have touched many interesting threads of the artist's life . Great performance and realization of the recording .
Absolutely superb, both the performance and the instrument!
My favorite interpretation of this beautiful piece. Thanks!
Beautiful rendition!
Gracias por su maravillosa interpretación. Mi más sincera enhorabuena!
Beautiful performance! Beautiful instrument!
Stunning! Took a moment for me to regain my composure.

Awe inspiring performance. ..this is what we are born for.
Very good recording of my favorite Bach Toccata.
Magnifica interpretazione! Complimenti 🤝
D'une incomparable beauté !!
Very very good. Thank you, man.
"Wonderful enlighten listening, amazing, and mind relaxation" "Awesome" "Very uplifting" "Very Happy Music For Me"
help i'm addicted to harpsichord
I like this guys performance very much! very good
Amazing! 👏🏿
Excellent the player and the instrument also!
Remarkable performance. As a keyboardist I am astounded!
Why does the NBS anonymize the "Italian piece" that Bach borrowed the fugue theme from? It is Benedetto Marcello's (1686-1739) Fugue in E minor. Several recordings of the piece are available on TH-cam. Marcello was a Venetian poet, writer, musician, lawyer, judge, administrator and philologist, not some "anonymous Italian". The giant should not be made to erase the memory of a composer whose music he studied and liked (otherwise he wouldn't use it in his own composition)!
Very pleasing instrument.
Magnificent
The fugue at the end reminds me of Bach's "Great" Fugue in Gm, BWV 542.
Me too
Very nice instrument.
Es simplemente perfecta
Preciosa
I like the bunny at 1:00
Is there any recording of that anonymous italian work on which the 4th section of the 914 is supposedly inspired? I've loved this BWV 914 for decades, and I think Jacob's interpretation is awesome! Please, help me know more on this piece!

uau...😍
kaltzman?
Where can one find a harpsichord like that ?
Ő valóban kapcsolatban volt az Úrral... Ő és Weöres Sándor...
Meg időnként József Attila...
Például a Bánat
Futtam mint a szarvasok,
lágy bánat a szememben.
Famardosó farkasok
űznek vala szívemben.
Aggancsom rég elhagyám,
törötten ing az ágon.
Szarvas voltam hajdanán,
farkas leszek, azt bánom.
Farkas leszek, takaros.
Varázs-üttön megállok,
ordas társam mind habos,
mosolyogni próbálok.
S ünőszóra fülelek.
Hunyom szemem álomra,
setét eperlevelek
hullanak a vállamra.
Ilyet ember magától nem ír... Ezt maga az Úr diktálta neki..
Miként Bachnak is ezt a fúgát...
Quanta bellezza
Skøn musik valaubalanceret og følsomt spillet....
నేను ఖచ్చితంగా బ్రహ్మాండంగా అంగీకరిస్తున్నాను

Is there any reason why the video is in e flat minor instead of e minor? Is it because of the instrument or because of copyright?
He is still playing in e minor but it sounds in e♭ minor because the harpsichord is tuned using A4=415Hz (about a semitone lower than standard A4=440Hz). That is common in Historically Informed Performances of Baroque Period compositions. It is not because of copyright or something.
