Varan was the kaiju that I always wanted to see more of when I saw him, he looked very unique design wise and I like how he glides, wish we could have seen more of it
One of the reasons why I love Varan is that you can do so much with him. You can give him a retractable wrist bone to aid in flight, you can give him a brotherly relationship with another kaiju, and you can even give him a beam.
Given his niche popularity with the fans and some of the toho filmmakers, I’m certain we will see Varan return to movie screens at some point, though it may be a bit.

It's so sad how Varan has become essentially forgotten through time, he is such a unique kaiju, his only appearances really outside of his own movie are just a mere few seconds in Destroy All Monsters, a few old Godzilla game appearances, and some books/comics, he could totally work in the Monsterverse too as a Hollow Earth resident or lying dormant in a lake near a village on one of the continents in the surface world, it's also pretty cool that he went toe to toe with Rodan in one of the comics and held his own against Rodan doing some pretty good damage to him. It was nice he got a nod a bit in Singular Point being an inspiration for Godzilla Amphibia but I want Varan to come back as himself, not as an evolution stage of Godzilla, it's also sad that there were film opportunities for him to show up but he was scrapped.
You forgot to mention that in the mobile game Godzilla Defense Force, data mining the files shows an unused model for Varan, indicating he was planned for the game but got cut for whatever reason.
Good video! You should have mentioned; however, how in the recent Rampage movie they obviously "borrowed" the "gliding using membranes" idea for their wolf monster Ralph. Which he uses in the final battle in Chicago.
This is like saying that plane stole from Birds because they both have wings. I mean come on man, there are lots of real animals that Glide with membranes, we have flying squirrels, sugar gliders, flying lemurs, we have gliding agamids and geckos which probably inspired Barak, heck we even have "flying" snakes and frogs. Sorry, main point I'm making is I'm not sure that they stole anything simply by making a gliding monster when the forests of our own real world seem to be almost full of them :-/

Imagine if Varan ends up the final villain of the MonsterVerse. After all those years being robbed of roles, he finally lands one as the baddest baddie of them all.
My guess for how Varan can return in the MonsterVerse: He is a Titan that is currently living on Komodo Island, and he is known to the locals' legends as "Baradagi, the Father of All Komodo Dragons". Like in Godzilla Unleashed, Varan can also emit a weaponized sonic pulse, and this version also have a venomous bite. He is known to protect Komodo dragons, similar to how King Kong protects the Sker Buffalo on Skull Island and Behemoth maintaining the balance of wildlife in the Amazon Rainforest, and he is an ally to Godzilla and Mothra, but also bears a grudge against Megalon and Battra for attacking him once in prehistoric times. His new design should also incorporate elements from monitor lizards (including Komodo dragons), iguanas, bearded dragons, and tuatara as well as flying squirrels and salamanders.

He also penned a tale in which Varan played a demonic Apocalypse monster years before we had the sources we have access to now. Always wondered what the odds of such a coincidence were.
Fun fact: There were gonna be several Varans in the Lost Continent. Also he's the first monster to fight Raptor-One, the anti-kaiju osprey, in the Godzilla 2000 novel. It's honestly my favorite fight in the entire Random House saga.

I've always felt that Baragon was actually originally meant to be an updated version of Varan in the same way that Godzilla was improved for "King Kong vs Godzilla" from the original. Not only does Baragon sound like an amalgam of Varan and his other name Baradagi, but, they almost look the same, main difference being that Baragon just seems like a more heavily built costume of the same creature just as they did to Godzilla. True, Varan can fly; perhaps Toho thought that was a bit much to swallow for his reappearance. At any rate, Baragon does some crazy high jumps during his fight with Frankenstein that's at odds with the more "serious" atmosphere of that film and seems like it could have been a replacement for his flying squirrel ability.

Probably one of the most under-appreciated kaiju in the franchise. Varan needs more love. At least he's really fun to play with in Unleashed.

At any rate, Baragon does some crazy high jumps during his fight with Frankenstein that's at odds with the more "serious" atmosphere of that film and seems like it could have been a replacement for his flying squirrel ability.
