    I did the opposite, swapped a 996 for a Lotus. The 911 bored me to tears, which was a shame as I'd wanted on since I was a kid. It was decent car, but it just didn't bring a smile to my face like the Lotus did.

      The 996 and its derivatives is in reality a 928 successor with - almost - all grand touring capabilities of the 928 but with a mechanical layout that is aping that of the 911. When Porsche understood that most 911 customers they wanted the style (but not the substance) of the 911 and the luxuries of the 928 the 911 was dead and buried.

    The 996 has always been a great (driver's) car. The Porschephiles who complained about the headlights make the word "Porschephile" a bad thing, and I always thought they were a) stupid and b) didn't know what they were talking about. OK, it does look like a 986 Box from the front which is obviously horrendous if you worry that your non-petrolhead friend thinks your 80K 911 (back then) is a 40K Boxster (back then). I hope they are happy with round headlights because the light, performant 996 is still one of the best (driver's) cars in the range, even with GT-1 style "fried egg" headlights which I like (exactly because they're reminiscent of a GT-1, although it's a bit of a chicken-and-fried-egg situation, if you will). But some people only care about impressing their neighbors and resale value (which, admittedly, is not a bad thing to have, but way way way down on the list of concerns for people who buy 911s to drive, not appreciate financially).

      Reliable, mid-engine, hydraulic steering, light, great-looking, rare, manual, and convertible. Seems like the perfect next car for you is a 987 Boxster Spyder. It's lighter than any current porsche at just 1270 kg (lighter than evora) and has a detuned 911 engine in it. A simple tune can net you another 40-50 HP too.

      JayEmm on Cars yeah. My Elise and 4c Spider can be maddening the attention they get. And not always good. People are getting pushy. Demanding rides, wanting sit in without asking. Just this past summer while at the car wash, no cash mind you on my lunch brake, some guy eh um, bloke asked for money and when I replied I had none, he took me to task for having 4c but no money for him. What’s the point/benefit of the insurance in your description? I’m in the US and I hear UK videos mention such insurance occasionally. It presumably costs more than insuring from a plain Jane insurance company? If so what’s the appeal exactly? What shortcomings do normal insurance agencies have re: modified/performance cars?

    • @Jabber-ig3iw
      @Jabber-ig3iw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fee they specialise in performance and more unusual cars, they don’t cost more than normal insurers and will agree values, will be less inclined to write off a damaged car, they are insurance in the old sense where you deal with an actual human being rather than mainstream insurers who are all boxes to tick online and a computer spews out your premium price, no human contact, no understanding of an enthusiast car or motorist.

    The 996 is the perfect combination of both old & new. They still have the very distinctive old school 911 sports car driving feel, while being "late 20th" century liquid cooled reliable. They also aren't overloaded with Nanny Safety Systems that you're unable to turn off. I'm obviously very partial to the 996 Turbo (as you can tell from my pic), which I chose to purchase only after driving the 997 & 991 Turbo's first. 966tt's are possibly the absolutely best of the Turbo variants that Porsche has ever built... & I've owned several different models.

    Welp, I thought you were going for Porsche, but you say it ain't it. 😶 Wonder what you're replacing it with and that Porsche is a good choice. If we go back to Porsche we'd get a 997, but the price isn't going down and we shouldn't have sold ours in the first place, but oh well. 😂

    I can’t hate the 996 fried eggs - and it’s because of the old GT1 that was modeled from it. The 1998 911 GT1 is the most gorgeous race car ever created in my opinion, making the 996 road car sort of the ugly duckling that grew into it. The maligned headlight shape (plus the tail lights) were about the only things to carry over to the race car, linking the 996 and GT1 together forever. I laughed out loud at “this might take a little bit of explaining”. It’s cool you have something fun to drive in the meantime. Interested to see what’s next.

      Did you watch the whole video?

    • @aftastosk6016
      @aftastosk6016 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did. It was a letdown of expectations that you failed somehow. To let me explain. To become really popular as a automotive presenter, you need to project a certain type of mentality of yourself and how you understand and how you love cars. For example, Doug De Muro, Hoovie, Shmee, despite the fact that they have an understanding of cars that I really hate (superficial, superflous, arrogant and ignorant in certain cases) they have this. They are consistent with what they project as media personalities. That's why they became popular. You fail to understand this. Jump from an Lotus to a 996 and fail to be aware that no other 996 owner would ever salute you is miserable. I am an MR2 owner and with the money that I 've spent (not many, by the way) I could had bought an Audi TT roadster but I haven't thought for the Audi even for a second. In theory they were competitors when the MR2 was sold but in reality the two cars are for different people. And yes, we salute each other when me and another MR2 meet on the road and I am aware this would had not happened if I owned a TT.
