Porsche 911 (996 C4s) vs Evora (S1 NA)

  • So 911 vs Evora is a question commonly asked - with either side usually thinking they know the answer. As I don't yet have the ability to summon up a brand-new 911 from Porsche, I went for the next best thing. I took my neighbour's 996 C4S (one of my favourite 911s) and took it to Stratton Motor Company for a comparison with the cheapest Evora you can buy, an S1 NA. The Evora commands a 50% premium over the 911, but that's only half what it would cost to jump to a later 997 or a 991.
    So my question is - if you're a Porsche fan, will the Lotus offer any improvements and more importantly do you sacrifice anything in the change?
    As always, please make sure to follow my social media exploits!

    I own both a 996 and an earlier Evora and agree with many of your observations. They are both great cars that do different things. I would give the refinement edge to the 911. The Evora has a decade advantage in chassis technology, so handling goes to the Evora. To my butt dyno, the Evora feels faster as well. Ingress/egress is very difficult in the Evora. The Lotus gets noticed everywhere, while the 996 gets noticed nowhere. The 996 is a wonderful daily supercar, while the Lotus is a reliable weekend machine with a greater sense of fun and occasion.

    I have been crushing on these two cars for a while and it baffles me why you don't see more of these head-to-heads. I've been subscribed to you but somehow never saw this exact video I have been looking for. This is perfect!... However, with a little more hard work and a few more dollars the comparison between a 997 s and an Evora s is in order.

    Never driven a 911, so found the comparison very interesting. Really like the honest, real world comparison.

    I've had both and the Evora is way, way more special/enjoyable. So nice to not worry about the engine, too. Uprated gearbox cables pretty much solve the gear change issues.

    Fair comparison, but I think the 911's interior is pretty good; especially the full leather version of the c4s. I am biased but I'd prefer the c4s over the evora even at the same price. I would however prefer the evora over the base 911.

    Loved that bit where you were talking about the Evora gear change - "The gearbox you get used to fairly... mh.. uh... second's not home... there's first". Haha!

      the 2012 model had new gear cables and it's not an expensive upgrade.

    I used to have (divorce) a 40th AE 996 - which was very nice - 345 BHP - all leather interior and LSD as standard...really nice but the engine was always a worry....well known for grenading - i just went to look at an Evora today - WOW! Beautiful and stand out car - i can imagine that you would be noticed everywhere and hand built too. Really got me thinking. Thanks for all the Videos - your love for them is obvious.

    I left a 996 C2 for an Evora S.....it is 2 different way to feel the road. I love the evora.....

    I found the facelift 996 with the 3.6 to be significantly better that the 3.4. You're right, the interior is a disappointment but the driving experience is very good. They're still representing good value for money.

    another great video! amazing how well loti keep their money, a very safe prospect for anyone wanting to give one a go. would be interested to know service costs vs an elise

    You forgot to mention that c4s prices are currently starting to rise, so you could buy a cheaper 911 and end up saving a hell of a lot more long term also when the time comes to sell..

    • @KTLaz
      @KTLaz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** It's not really an issue anymore as such a long period of time has passed most have already had the issue by now as most are well past the risky period.In fact early 997's are a much riskier buy according to my very experienced mechanic.Just don't think lotus will ever have the long term desirability and therfore will end up being a better investment long term

    Get the Fister muffler mod on the 996 - great mod and inexpensive to boot.

    Objective and fair, but Evora is still not in the fair price range yet, for early models at least. Thanks for the comparison.

    Engine bill is more then 10k believe me as proven by receipts. A great car mine car has 101k but was fully rebuilt including gearbox, brakes and engine at 97k and is truly amazing. Future classic and will not be selling

    Yes - because when I am concerned that an older 911 may not be reliable enough for me, I think Lotus!

    I’m late to the party but great video. Having rebuilt a 996 M96 3.4L motor (actually only the heads were reusable - was $10k in parts) I wouldn’t have one again. Great dynamically but the M96 is a heavily cost reduced engine. I’d buy the Evora. Far less boring and reliable Toyota power train.

    Minor detail, but the 996 C4S and Turbo came with the 10mm lower sports chassis (M030 on C2 and C4) as standard.

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris K That's interesting, I wonder why the C4S feels so much more compliant than my M030 C4 did

      Don't know but I own a C4S and someone sent me a copy of the 2004 option list and 'sports chassis 10mm lowered' is listed as standard on the C4S and Turbo. Old/New dampers on one of them maybe?

    The Evora is not practical, no one drives it around here in Toronto, parts must be very expensive and rare. I own a 996 and an bias but wouldn't mind driving the lotus for fun!

  • @kenshirk6993

    I really get tired of people telling me about the cheap interior of the 996.2....mine is 14 years old and has held up fine, no leather cracks, everything works. the 5 gage instrument dash is still used today....... No mention of the all wheel drive advantage of the C4S in inclement weather, no mention of a great HVAC system--I can hang meat in my car. Frankly, James, I think you were very impressed with this C4S and could not fine it in yourself to admit it. You set out with your BS hypothesis and found out you might be wrong. This IMS is a way over blown issue with real world failures around 2%. If you are worried-fix it $1,700.....Bitching about knobs? Really now? I get compliments all the time on my '02, mine is a C2- 0-60 4.8-4.9ish. Let's remember-this car sold 175,000 units. It saved (not alone) Porsche. Let's be honest about the Evora entry and regress is most difficult, the dials are hard to read, the touchscreen infotainment system is whimsically dysfunctional, the radio reception is poor, the pedal positioning is uncomfortably offset, the gearchange isn’t great, the fuel range is stingy, there’s very little boot space and a lot of road noise. You needed to belittle the Porsche to make yourself feel better, but your belittling was predominantly opinion. You and the Evora will always be chasing the 911....and you can't even catch the "lowly" 996.

    • @kyongslist
      @kyongslist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      belittling was prominently opinion? since when is anything in such a video, confirmed as NOT opinion? lol your rant is pathetic, shows what little perspective you truly have. Your own individual experience with 1 car out of that 175,000 you state, does NOTHING to warrant your claims, as far as we know, it doesnt even exist. Whereas, we can clearly see Jay driving the cars and making these videos, so his opinion, albiet just that, is obviously far more valuable then your own stupid.... hahg

    996's and 997's down to 10K my butt, only 996's are possibly as low as 10k and they don't have a reputation for having expensive engine failure ! only if you have been on Mars and stupid enough to own one that might have the original IMS bearing.

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      997s got into teens, 996s actually dipped below that for less than great examples. I saw a 996 turbo in decent condition sell for 18k once
