Thanks for the video! I just got this for a new freelance gig I'm doing where I need to use selfie mode walking around for an hour or so doing livestreams. The gimbal selfie stick and overall weight were the final deciding factors on choosing this over the DJI Osmo3 which my boyfriend got at the same time as I got mine. We're both learning how to use our gimbals now and did some comparatives as well. The grip on the DJI is more comfortable, but with the tripod attachment of the combo it helps give some length to the SmoothX, so that is helpful. The ZY Cami app, as others have mentioned, isn't great. It doesn't seem to always connect and the tutorials are lacking which is why I'm here on your video to see how to operate the thing after the initial set-up. For a beginner gimbal user I wasn't familiar with the lock, pan, and pan & follow modes and what those meant. Also, I couldn't seem to locate exactly what the "M" button does and couldn't remember from the PDF user manual printed in a small print that can't be zoomed in to read well. So thank you very much for the more throrough instructions and examples for each. I'm going to check out what other helpful info you have in other videos now. :)

Great review. I already own this thing and for the life of me couldn't figure out how to activate the different follow modes. The manual of this gimbal is sadly really sparse.

I had a Zhiyun Q2 gimbal earlier this year but it would not hold my phone very well, it would shake if i tilted it. Maybe my phone was too heavy? Anyways, i liked the size of the Q2 and that I didn't need to have the ZY app open all the time to use the gimbal.
I could use it to take videos via the regular Samsung camera app. I would like to get another gimbal that has a reach like this one, but I love the feature of not having to only be on the specific gimbal app. Does the CAMI app have to stay open in order for the gimbal to have the stabilizing benefits??
I have a Samsung S8 for reference.

I do a combination of color grading and using a LUT. My goal is to start doing more tutorials so if there is something you are stuck with, and it's not covered very well on TH-cam, feel free to suggest a topic! Thanks for the support!
hi, can i ask u some question. for the lock mode, is it the gimbal supposed the pan axis and roll axis should be fully locked and cant move right?

PS: I tested mine out today & noticed that the motors struggle a bit in FPV mode when pole is fully extended. Using a phone & case weighing 208g total. Did you experience that with your setup?
That’s awesome Jonathan! Yes FPV mode is ideal when the gimbal is completely closed. Once the stick is out and especially tilted, it is much more sensitive to the phone’s weight. Balancing it perfectly does help but physically expected.

Good reviews, you nailed all the important things. But not for me because I just bought the Dji Osmo Action. I can do all of that plus more. I know it is only $60 but I hate filming with my phone because it drains the battery so fast. I need to get in tight weird angle which is seems hard with this gimbal.

Liked your video and subscribed. So this is a 2-axis gimbal, not 3-axis, right? Wondering how stable it is filming when walking or hiking.
Hey Geoff, sorry for the late response. Older video comments gets buried. Welcome to the channel! Yes 2 axis gimbal such as this does require more stability from the user to stay stable. The up side is that, you can point up or down very fast. While you are hiking and see something interesting, it's very intuitive to point that way.

Haha Omar, I won't be using that mode much LOL. Zhiyun's culture is to keep innovation at the top. They like to push the market forward. There is pros and cons to that too, but I like to see technologies move forward!

Hi Thomas, great question. The mount and the motor is fairly flushed. I just double checked it for you. In video 0.5X ultra wide mode, you cannot see the motor. In the photo mode, since it’s not cropped like video mode, you can see a hint of the motor in the corner.

I was also thinking to use this for some selfie walking video, do you think the video is useable and stable enough? Cos your selfie video is too short for me to make a judgement.
Of course I don’t expect it to be as steady as those 3 axis gimbal.
If you also have an iPhone 11, since it has gyroscope-based electronic image stabilization already for the front camera, it's fairly decent for the size. It beats hand held for sure. The most important thing is that you can gain some distance between the phone and yourself because of the selfie stick. You don't even have to extend it all the way out. Just having it half way out, gives you a different perspective than just holding out a standard gimbal. You're right. It does not beat a 3 axis gimbal. However, one more thing to consider is that, it is much easier to control the tilt axis as you're not trying to go through a motor. That movement will come more natural to you since "your wrist" will have direct control over that. Hope that helps!
and one more note for Thomas - the ZY Cami app only controls one lens on the iPhone 11. If you want the Ultra Wide angle lens, you have to exit the ZY Cami app and use the phone's built in camera app. Something to know. Man, it is hard to cover everything in one video. But if you guys need any more info, I'm here on the comments!

Yeah, that's all that gimbal was worth: Bait for another, better, more capable gimbal. (Or, would that be a "Phishing scam" by BestBuy to get me to buy a BETTER, albeit more expensive rig?!!) Couldn't get it to balance my One+ 8T, without a lot of hassle, so I took it back and traded up for a DJI OM4. MUCH BETTER rig! Sure, I forked out another $100, but it was worth it! (The Smooth X was only $49.99 at my local BestBuy here in San Francisco.) If you're a pro and want to use your phone for 4K B-roll, or maybe even the "main attraction", then go for another rig. Sorry, but I had higher expectations, which were all dashed by the Smooth X.
