  • This old Chevy was once a restored beauty but has been sitting outside for 21 years. Come along as I try to get this car running and moving out of its resting place!

Old man in my town had a '50. Bought it brand new and never missed a car show even when he was well into his 90s. Passed about ten yrs ago maybe more. Never saw it again.

Fun video that brought back memories. Our family car in the 50s was a 49 Chevy. I got my drivers license in it on my 16th birthday. It didn't have turn signals so I had to use arm signals, which we were taught in drivers ed in HS.

    • @whattherust

I remember hand signals very well. I owned a 50 Chevy once that did not have turn signals until I bought it.

this gem started right away... surely it's been waiting for you to kiss it back alive. :D
it's so complete, and despite the broken window the interior is still good to be cleaned and done with it, amazing. :) you could just clean it and fix the mechanical issues and the occasional rust hole, and keep the patina and traces of 72 years of driving. well, more 50 years, but still. here in europe the signs of a life on the road have become more valued than a better-than-new look (even more as some artists are able to create the old look out of a freshly restored vehicle; but then, where is the car's history?).

The part you were looking at on the steering wheel is the horn Ring. I have a 50 Chevy. Yours is just broken.

Have the weed wacka at full noise when cutting long grass and be patient, don't bury the cutter in the grass. Love the car.

Those old Chevy 6 poppers were g reat engines. Smooth as glass. Premix sounds like a good idea for first start fuel. My Dad had a 53 but it was pretty rusty and then got stolen.

Those where work horses. My dad had a 51, we cut a big maple tree the trunk set on the saw's bar. my brother climbed up the tree, hooked rope to it, and the other end to the car, and pulled the tree down. With basically the same mechanics as this 50 model. Dad painted houses for a living, he carried his step ladders in the trunk, a 40' and 20' wooden extension ladders on top.
I wish I had one now.

That is a great story. Do you have any pictures with the ladders on top?

The heater is the "more expensive" Chevrolet dealer option Air Flow heater. You will see the core for it on the right inner fender. The "those are for" is the remnant of the half circle horn blow ring that were part of the DeLuxe wheel. It is not an oil bath air cleaner...it is the standard non-oil bath air cleaner. Only the wire mesh has oil on it. This car also has the 1950 Chevrolet accessory hood ornament.

That is great info Josh. Thank you for taking the time to write it. I have seen so many different kinds of heaters in these early 50 Chevys, there must have been at least 4 different kinds used.
