- This car is a great example of the style of the end of the Chrysler fin era, and is our 50th will it run/will it start video. Curves everywhere, a spaceship dash, and canted headlights up front. When I was a kid a neighbor across the street had a 61 in Beige over copper! I was in love with that car!

I believe that the driver's side seat is taller because men usually drove the cars back in the 60s and the ladies usually sat in the passenger seat. Happy 50th Revival

Chris there is an old saying “ just cause it smokes, don’t mean it’s broke “. The more that car runs the better it’s going to get. I'm really liking this one since I had a 61 Newport wagon when I was 17. I got it after the 65 Newport I had got totaled in a drunk driving accident. That 61 was really special to me.

That front seat was used for a few years across most Chrysler models. It was called the "High Tower" seat. " Imperial featured the new “High-Tower” seat with the driver-side back individually contoured and raised above of the rest of the front seat for increased driver comfort and shoulder support".

The asymmetrical design of the front bench seat was an Exner styling touch used to emphasize the driver's seating position. However, it was considered too funky for the rest of the automotive industry and Chrysler Corporation stopped using it. The 1961 Newport was the defacto replacement for the DeSoto which abruptly ended soon after. The Chrysler Division avoided a smaller car at that time...but had been moving downmarket since the shorter wheelbase and Dodge based 1958 Windsor.
even the optional swivel seats had the High Tower rise for the driver's seat.

That car looked like a Battleship on camera. It's hard to belive that that was a typical American car at one time. I'm 75 years old, and have a 87 Dodge Diplomat, AHB car I got back to active duty. It is my daily driver, and I love it.

Chrysler Corp made some gorgeous looking cars starting in 1957 and through the early 1960's. Unfortunately, it's not likely we'll ever see anything as beautiful again. I consider myself fortunate to have been old enough at the time to have experienced such spectacular looking vehicles.

Beautiful car from an era that I remember well, when cars had flash and flair and you could easily tell them apart. Great job! That is one rare Chrysler and Factory AC too. I can assure you from what I see in the video that is the original AC compressor that came with that car from the factory!

I like the tip about filling a hose up with fluid instead of pouring or spraying it into the spark plug hole directly. Why didn't I think of that?

I had a /62 when I was a young teen.... friends and I drove it around the paths of our farm...... love the dash ....loved that car...
Chrysler definitely had the lock on style back then. Starting in the late 50s, they began a design called "The Forward Look" and it was designed to represent the future, so every car and truck had a very futuristic look and style to it. Very space age oriented...and of course it was the beginning of our space program with NASA. Jets and rockets were all the rage. This Newport certainly embodies that design for sure! Im assuming this one doesn't have the Hemi, but you could get a Hemi if you wanted it. The Letter Cars were most famous for having Hemis and they raced in NASCAR. Very cool car!!! That's should be a 413. Not as famous as the hemi but still a good engine with plenty of power.
The advertisement hacks in 1957 (the first year The Forward Look) used the tag line "suddenly its '60"

Wow, so love you saving these 60s Chryslers. Back in the 70's , drove a 1960 and 61 Windsor and the 61 was a Newport. Both 2 dr hardtop. And parking brakes are on the driveline. Another cool feature is the turnsignal switch is on the dash and matches the heatercontol lever! Once again great channel,,,
Nothing beats those finned Chrysler cars. The gauge cluster was called AstraDome. Great video.

Chrysler featured an entirely "Back -lit" instrument panel, including that rather alien-looking dome. I pulled up behind one of these cars, many years ago, at night, in downtown Seattle. The intense glow from the blue/green instrument panel, was casting its colors outside, onto the pavement and sidewalks!...That car looked so very "space age", which was exactly what the American public was attracted to during the late 1950s, early 1960s. Cars of today are more reliable, much more safe, etc. But this type of "out there" styling we will never see again. I miss it so much! (forgive me, I am a Boomer!).

I use steel braided hose instead of the plastic tubing that comes with oil pressure gauges. It gives you the heat-resistance of copper tubing, along with the flexibility of plastic tubing.

The old cars are just so much nicer and better built than the new cars of today, they are stylish, these days, they have just lost imagination and concentrate on functionality. I had a friend that had one of those explode just behind the quage on the dash while driving on the highway. He got burnt from hot oil spraying on his legs! My parents bought a 61 Newport wagon brand new. I grew up with that car.
I had a 61 Newport wagon back in 1967.

Ny parents had the one like the red 62 that they moved out of the way to get the 61 out. This one has factory A/C, ours did not, but ours had a remote drivers side mirror, electric clock, and day and night mirror, which this one does not have. The front seat is a 40/60 command chair sest where the drivers seat is higher than the passenger side. Whatbis really amazing here is the dash pad with no cracks. My dad bought our 63 in May 1962, and by 1968, the dash had multiple cracks in it. For the most part, it was garage kept. One really neat feature in 1962 was the gear reduction starter. That had an amazing sound when starting the car. I hope someone buys it and restores it. It definitely deserves it. The price is super low, so I hope it doesn't end up as a derby car.

I told you, that Richard is slick, he’s got some skills! Yeah, looks like a pastel color blue or something pastel.
I was so interested on this video as soon as I saw the headlights!!! As you went through the car I would see its metal is good enough to be able to fix the car. The trim work looked complete. One critical lever is missing. The springs were there. Mirror and lights were there. Unless I missed it there was no attempts to shift the transmission. That is a HUGE piece in that car. The engine run really well considering everything and should be great to restore. Another thing that people often look for is the broadcast sheet. It would let you know more than even the vin provides. I sure want someone to get that car restored and in a car collection or museum. I am physically done and I too live vicariously through shows online now. When I want to dream I can watch auctions of collector cars.

I agree, the car has a lot going for it. I am sure it will be saved. It is just a matter of finding the right person. The trans is junk. We didn't bother with it, since the pan was off.
Did the other one have the same trans that could be used? Maybe the inside parts of the second one could be used to rebuild of the #'s matching trans. He could also have parts around his place for the trans. I have seen enough car deals that it would be well worth asking the gentleman who had the car(s) for sale. Most likely (90%) the second car was bought with the idea of being a parts car.@@whattherust
@@Irish_For_Life1842 Yes, the black one has a trans in unknown condition, and the owner has a couple of spares as well. I would think at least one of them is good.
