  • I produced and filmed this video some years back. Winching, using a variety of off road winches and which one to use, has been a long winded debate that may carry on for time to come. It probably all depends on the off road enthusiast, and the kind of money that is available to spend. This video slants and favors Hydrolic winching, its not my particular personal view, however honestly i must admit that I do like PTO and Hydrolic winches, in my view they have immense pulling strength.Currently I am using an electric battery powered winch, because of the cost of a Hydrolic winch and the electric winch currently fits snugly into the bush bar of my Land Cruiser Please enjoy the video.

Fine and dandy, but I will save lifting my hat for the Aussie Bush Winch for this one. That thing is ridiculously simple and rugged. Good job, Aussie !

I find that separate 12v hydraulic pumps that are mounted above the water line are both affordable and reliable to power hydraulic winches. I have burned out or outright broken Mile Marker, Warn, and SuperWinches that are electric while the Warrior hydraulic winches work fully submerged and have never stopped pulling my 11,000 lb F350 work truck with a heavy 7.3L diesel.

Hydraulic winches -yes if you have the pump to drive it - thanks for informing me that one could actually USE the power Steering pump. - Never gave it much thought as such since usually steering systems are low power - Pressure & Flow. I'll have to do some Sums now for a Customer. Thanks for posting

The model discussed here it's a Mile Maker. This was especially designed to be used with power steering. Who knows any other hydraulic winch brand

I prefer mechanical PTO winch because it's reliable and does not drain the battery.

What about in a Landrover Series 3 truck no power steering but a split charge relay system and a 12vdc 90ah leisure battery running along with the vehicle 12vdc 75ah starting battery for occassional use an electric winch will be better suited and cost a lot less also.

The sound/volume make the video really hard to want to watch all the way through.

Will a 24 volt hydraulic winch work on a 12 volt system ?
