When stuck in mud, sand or snow after youve found a good anchoring point to hook your winch line to lay the winch line over the top of your spare tire about 5 feet in front of your rig . It will lift your vehicle up out of the mud , sand or snow before its starts being pulled forward. Its amazing how fast a vehicle is recovered using the spare as a lifting point
That's the way farmers pull a tree root out with a tractor, produces vertical lift on the root right away.
True..... but also increases danger by insuring the line will go high if something breaks....🤪😬

I may note that on all buried recovery points the resistance to withdrawal is improved greatly if a trench is dug to ramp up the rope rather than the rope coming vertically out of the hole.
with a ramp the anchor is pulled through the ground rather than pulled up through the back-filled material.
Ramping the trench at a 1:3 slope (for every foot deep ramp out to 3 feet or the equivalent ratio in metric) would easily double the withdrawal resistance due to the shear capacity of the undisturbed ground.
it is also easier on the rope and does not embed as much sand into the fibers.
I think the hi-lift jack would have worked if it was burried deeper. the other critical component that was missing from these attempts was that you didn't dig a lead line trench from the depth of the anchor in the direction of the winch. this would have given less of a vertical (lifting) force component and it would have engaged more passive resistance from the earth you are trying to anchor in. another easily stored option that would require a lot less digging is a tilting plate passive earth anchor. I have seen these used for heavy equipment tie downs with great success as long as it is installed correctly.

I notice whenever someone is testing the Deadman it's always in nice soft sand and on a sunny beautiful day. If only life was that convenient, lol!
You go to the beach in a storm? It's meant for sand and most people are at the beach on a nice beautiful day.
I'd rather have overcast day myself....Digging that sand on a "beautiful" day is hot work, for you and your winch.
When you berry anything for an anchor you need to dig a small channel for your strap or cable to lay in so it's not trying to pull it up and out of the hole
Should have tried to bury a pair of maxtrax. He also should have used a winch cable instead of a snatch strap. The smaller the strap the better will it cut trough the sand building a better angle to winch out🤔😅

Back in the old days around 1975, I did what you guys are doing with my 1956 long wheelbase Land-Rover, the difference being I had a Capstan winch, and a 100 meters 25mm dia manila rope we buried the spare wheel 750 X 16 halfway through the pull, the chain broke around the buried wheel, so moral of this story add a 2nd rope independent of the first rope and leave it above the suffice, so you don't spend the rest of the day looking for the said buried wheel Australia

Ronny - I carry a normal everyday boat sand anchor... Simple to use... Dig a good hole and bury it and your winch cable with the shank at a 45 degree angle and out you pop... The pull of the winch forces the blade deeper into the sand and they work well without having to bury a bloody big tyre...
The deadman has multiple uses and packs into a tight space without the weight.
Exactly what type of boat anchor works for this? I searched online and their are many different options.
@@Tsalinger But you don't have to dig a 4 ft hole with a boat/sand anchor. You can still carry the sand anchor (army calls it a sand parachute0 for the other uses.
Thank you for this. I've got a winch installation ordered and the Deadman is already in my van. Your videos are very helpful for someone not a hardcore off roader but someone looking for modest adventure in the pursuit of other goals.
Lesson from snow & ice climbing: make sure the lead from the dead anchor is buried so that the pull doesn't just lift the anchor out of the snow/sand - the anchor needs to stay below sand level, so line up the pull rope/strap accordingly.
And make the anchor want to bury itself rather than pop out by leaning it away from the pull direction.

Bulka bag $20 at sand or brick suppliers- will give that a try, I have seen them lift 2 tons. Also if you can't get a bulka bag out, just leave it there ( with regard to the environment, ie if tide beating ya, Good stuff!)
An idea tried in Mexico was HI lifting each wheel filling hole with sand and topping with Max Trax. Worked like a charm..

I buried a log once, took me 4 hours to did the hole deep enough. Had a winch but there was nothing solid within winching distance. I now have 60m of winch extension and after this I’m buying a deadman. Thanks Ronny.

Awesome video... I work with cranes and rigging, we use shackles, what you referred to as a D ring- there's all sorts of different types- but we use them to keep the slings from burning against itself- enough pressure and they'll melt together. Can totally understand why using metal could pose a hundred different hazards in off road applications..

dunno why you put the tire vertical would buried it flat, and dug a small strap wide trench for the strap so you are pulling against everything instead of just poping out the tire top

My thoughts, they didn't leave any trench for the tyre or high lift.
It's only pulling on the sand to put on top, not the beach.
I agree the weight of the sand on it laying flat in the sand would have worked the first try

I had a similar situation on a SA beach ,with waves lapping at the back wheels we used a ground anchor (brand name I think) It`s a heavy steel thing with folding wings . It saved the 130 but my buddy had to ride it , we also needed a snatch block. It also showed me the treachery of beach driving ,70 kph to dead stop in a very short distance , no we didn`t cross a stream .Thanks to you & your hardworking crew for making this video.

A good video and public service. One thing i would add is bury your point as far as possible from the stuck vehicle. Use as much working strap as you can. The reason being is if you get stuck again digging that hole a second time is a real pain in the butt... from first hand experience. ;-)

Yes and another advantage is that the winch will have greater pulling power with most of the cable off it's drum.
it's the exact same as anchoring a boat. the more scope you have out, the better holding power your anchor will have.
True just like anchoring in the snow during alpine climbing u need to dig a proper T for maximum effect and minimum effort

the dead man is good for many reasons: easy to pack & carry, many different applications, it isn't stored underneath the vehicle when you weren't planning on getting stuck, no risk of wrecking the valve stem on the spare tire, or bending the wheel, easy to wash, could be used to secure other items tying a load down, possible ground sheet to stay cleaner if working under your vehicle, close off a broken window opening, a miniature tarp for rain protection, and even as an apron for cooking...apparently...yeah, so far I like it.

Wow wasn't expecting the deadman to work that good, best part is it just folds up and you cam chuck it behind the back seat no bulky storage issues
i think maxtrax combined with a smaller tyre like a 32 to help with the lateral drag would work really well in wet sand, but that deadman is the ultimate beach kit, thanks for sharing the knowledge

Another good video Ronny & the team, because viewers will watch this for years, it might be worth updating a pinned comment that says the original video had the deadman incorrectly used upside down (should be the face up and the smile closest to the car) and that to remove without digging it out you attach the winch rope to just ONE of the legs and the manufacturers say it will pull out fairly easily! Cool looking product with multiple uses
Hum, 12:40, the hi-lift does not appear bent, the tube arm does, thus, it is good. Wow, the Dead Man is a winner-winner!

Great vid - small suggestion - when burying your tyre use your tyre lever behind the hole in the wheel to attach your strap to. this way the strap wont damage your tyre.

The Deadman is the only thing I'd use in sand or even mud. After seeing the demo by the company (buried way deeper than rig was) it was truly impressive for the money. Since then I've used it heaps (not just for myself) & it's never failed nor is it even worn (just fyi). Best purchase I ever made!

Yes it must have been, I didn't see Ronny doing much of the digging, being a TH-camr this sort of thing is best left to the workers behind the camera, after all can't have him break a fingernail or something.
Tired digging in sand? That's funny. I dug a hole up to my chin and 6' dia with a plastic shovel. LOL.

I did something similar but buried a 8 foot 12 inch diameter log and it worked great!
I've seen people winch off of buried maxtrax too... cool stuff.

Use the high lift Jack to lift the tires out of the hole and fill the hole to above grade and move to the next tire. Until free.
I used a dead man ounce when I got stuck, the problem I ran into was when I exerted enough force to pull myself out all four of his limbs came off.

You had me at everyone should have 2 recovery dampeners 🤙 best thing I've heard had a couple of arguments over people think 1 in the middle is sufficient it's definitely not..20 meters apart 10mtrs of air time will drag that dampener with it .. should always use 2
You buried the Deadman in shoreline wet sand while the other stuff you pulled away from shore. Much like your shearing tow ball video, you always stack the deck to achieve your results!

Surely one other of 687 have already said this : you don't need a big hole -- you need a deep hole dug out so the tyre is against undisturbed soil/sand and at an angle with the bottom towards the pull . You also need a trench for the rope to stop any upward pull . Thought just mind : rope through the wheel and around a maxtrax or two behind the wheel so the wheel pulls straight and flat against the sand .
Best old fella tip: be smart, don't get bogged !

Try it in soft dry sand sand.. You will need a hole with a diameter at least 5 times the depth.. And if it is in a desert environment that has soft dry sand, that is damn hard work. You really want to get it right first time, you really do . :)
When using a Wheel as a sand anchor. Put tree trunk protector through the middle of the wheel then put a block of wood through loop to stop protector pulling through and dig a trench to level out the angle of the pull. SAVE YOUR TYERS
Got an idea.... You could also demonstrate “push outs.” I’ll explain it even though you’d already know... The most ideal of any recovery if you have 2 other men in ur party. The idea is when you very first get stuck in sand, stop accelerating immediately. Try reverse for 1 second also. If you don’t go forwards or backwards for a second each then give up. Get 2 of your mates to push either on the front or rear of the car to assist, then feather the accelerator in low range and you’re out of the light sand bog easily and quickly. We do that all the time when we occasionally get stuck or need to recover others if they haven’t overdone it. I’ll avoid using the car to snatch if possible as people power is faster if coordinated right. And you also don’t have to unpack the clean snatch strap then pack it away again. Even works in very soft sand if you’re stuck on a slight incline. Just push the car backwards. It’s amazing how much it helps when 2 energetic lads are pushing on the car. Makes a huge difference in a situation where the car is unable to recover itself. If in soft sand on level ground, just dig some quick trenches behind or in front of wheels and then do the push out. I’ve briefly educated so many people on this method of recovery on Fraser Is over the years when 1st on the scene on an inland track bog for eg, or 2nd, 3rd or 4th to rock up where everyone else is standing around with hands on chins. It always amazed me how many people didn’t know about it. Your big Cruiser may need 3 people pushing though in certain situations.

Simple solution with the tyre, bury the tyre and add some water to wet the sand and it gives the sand much more weight and much more pulling power, you have the sea behind you so no shortage of water.

Watched "The Leyland Brothers" do the tyre recovery method back in the 70's.. They tilted the tyre back at 45 degrees so it pulled the tyre downwards as you winched. Had a groove dug in the sand so the sling wasn't pulling upwards and passed the eye off the sling through the wheel center and put a jack handle (piece of pipe) through the eye of the sling so it didn't pull back through.... No risk of damaging your tyre with the sling wrapped around it. Also, because it was buried at 45 degrees, you just pulled it with the same sling from the opposite direction and the tyre pulled out.
I’ve done it with a tyre by putting the strap through the centre of the rim and then locking it with a steel bar (or the high lift). That way the tyre gets pulled flat. Also easy to remove the strap without excessive tightening of the strap around the tyre..
I cobbled up some earth anchors out of 1" steel bar and 1/2" plate with chains attached. They dig deeper when pulled against instead of up. To remove them you need to pull from the backside. Heavy, bulky, but no digging.
love the name of your truck.
with the parachute anchor (deadman) you can also run the back legs through the front legs if you are short on shackles. as you saw trying to pull it out with the winch that is not an easy task.
a log is the original deadman anchor. I have also seen a largish loose rock wrapped with a strap and buried. the highlift should be a last resort item unless you own stock in the company. they will get bent most every time doing that.
Used this several times... need to put tire flat a the bottom or upright facing the tow vehicle at the bottom of the hole. Hole is as deep as the tire is big plus a foot. Need a cable slot. If you are by yourself , which is not recommended, use your remote video camera or action cam with the WiFi on mounted to a tripod to watch the deadman from your phone or iPad in the cab, for movement at full distance of the cable.
Get a little slack in the winch. Roll backwards and give the two straps on the deadman a quick snapping jar. It will break it free from the sand.
That deadman system is great , less work than a tyre , if your all alone you go home . Not everyone has a winch though , back to shovel and max tracks or wait for a tow out , a lot of 4WDrivers will help anyone anywhere , great bunch :-)

In a pinch you could use your farm jack (High Lift jack) as a winch/giant come-along. I used them before I had enough money to buy a winch.
Stephen Kite I only help people that bring their own gear if you go 4 wheel driving with no recovery gear I'm not using mine to get you out
That fabric and nylon webbing Deadman has been used for twenty years (that I know of) to sand-anchor big display kites. Very effective anchor, and packs up nicely for storage.

We pulled a big Ford van Sportsmobile out of the sand with a 35" but we threw it in horizontally, and made a nice trench for the cable.
When using the hijack method if you grab a couple buckets of water and pour in there as you feel with sand that should be enough to make the sand dense enough to be able to winch yourself out haven't tried this myself but I'm going to try it I'll get back to you
Malcolm Douglas did the buried tyre recovery on one of his shows about 40 years ago. It has been burned into my memory all that time as a way out of trouble.
Ronnie did you see you just pull the deadman out by one strap from the back and it leaves no hole behind, what a cool recovery tool!!!

You should test a Maxtrax on it's side with a couple straps around it. Kinda like a buried plow, Lot's of surface area should work well.

large cork screws like mobile home anchors ? wet sand around tires to firm up the sand. take a bucket.
we use an 7.5 foot 2X12 and bury it about 2 foot down crosswise in the sand with a trench going toward the truck so the cable is pulling straight toward the truck / when you star to wind in the cable you are trying to move all the sand the width of the board toward the truck pulling it's trying to move 84 cubic inches of sand x the distance to your vehicle
