Interesting how different countries have different military music traditions. Each evokes different emotions. German marches are happy, and evoke joy. It kind of shows that Germans are always happy about war. British and American marches are also happy, but far more energetic. They have that kind of macho-like strength. "We will defeat everyone!" They are about glory. Japanese marches are intense, and evoke fear. The lyrics are always about death and loss. Russian marches are about *both* loss and glory. They are not as aggressive as German marches and have a more depressive tune to them, but unlike Japanese marches are ultimately uplifting. Victory is only possible through sacrifice. As for Korean military music, I personally hear a lot of Japanese and American influence, but there is also a national touch to it. Korean marches are calmer, more reserved. If there is one emotion I think it evokes, it is duty. I assume it makes sense. Koreans are not as belligerent as Russians or the Japanese, and their main adversaries are, well, each other. War is like a solemn duty to you, isn't it? Something that *has* to be done, but in the end of the day, it is still terrible - fighting your own compatriots. I hope you understand me. Unfortunately my Korean is not good enough to express all my thoughts. I live in Russia, but my great-grandparents come from the Korean Empire - both the North and the South. If fates had turned out a bit different, my ancestors would have ended up becoming mortal enemies. That kind of makes me sad. While I am Korean by ethnicity, I was raised in a Russian city and in Slavic culture, and I cannot understand Korea fully. But Russians know full well what it feels like, to be divided by ideologies and governments and turned against one another. It was us, after all, who brought this war to Korea...
I'm Korean, but Russian marches makes me to feel something as well. For Germany, war was a life tradition that was embedded in Prussian diplomacy. For Japan, war symbolized its path from underdeveloped Asian nation to major colonial power.. though it ended in a big failure. For US, war was conceived as a glorious act to protect free world against fascism and communism. But for Russia and Korea, war was something different. Although the two nations have had quite different historical path, both had to suffer from a war that they did never want to be participated in. Unlike Germany, Japan, US, UK, France, and many more, USSR in the WW2 and SK in the Korean war had lost TOO MANY LIVES to enjoy victory or glorify the war (...or, in our case, to praise our ultimate success over enemy's ultimate failure after 50 years). IMO that's what the two nations share in the last century.

3:44 Is this the Korean equivalent of Ich hatt' einen Kameraden?
Exactly. Especially to those who had experienced the Korean War it has a more significant meaning.
In 1950, right after the war, South Korean army was pushed backward to Busan, which is one of the most southeast city of the peninsula. Against North Korea which had conquered ~90% of the land, South Korea was desperately enduring at their last defense line, the Nakdong river. The song sings about this worst situation in the Korean war.

9:55 why did they change the lyrics from anti-communism to peace? Was this remixed by Moon Jae In? Lol.
Why do you hate communism so much? Even the DPRK is not communist nowadays, it is more fascist than anything.
Imperios You should understand that in the past of South Korea, the word "communism" was actually used synonymously with "North Korea", despite the fact they are almost not a communist system. That's why I recently deliberately narrowed the object of "communism" to the Kim family of North Korea.(th-cam.com/video/44ghG9EVkRc/w-d-xo.htmlm23s).
Since the ROK armed forces are conservative, the discussion for the misuse of the word "communism" will only be possible after the fall of North Korea.
To make it a little more understandable, it is like North Korea accuses the Republic of Korea of being "imperialists".
Rhee I can kind of see it. Russian media too has a tendency to call Ukrainians and Westerners "fascist", even though it is *our* government that has fascist tendencies. Fascists had caused so much death in Russia during World War II that for us, it simply became synonymous with pure evil.
I guess that it's the same in South Korea. Over the years, "communist" stopped being a meaningful word and just became a synonym for "enemy", because of all the ruin communism have brought to your country.
